So often these days, when I share advice with entrepreneurs, I'm sharing contrast between what I used to do and what I've learned to do with experience. When it comes to recruiting, hiring, and motivating teams, this is often the case. Unfortunately, when I was younger, I was a pretty challenging leader. I was myopic and almost entirely focused on the business, I didn't really want to know what was going on with my team, and I saw people as process who were there only to help me get things done. Over the past, almost 30 years of leading teams, my perception has completely changed. I now know that creating a safe emotional environment for my team is one of the biggest advantages that creates our success. Recently several members of my team have been experiencing some difficult life situations. We have a specified time to talk about what is going on openly with the rest of the team, so other people understand what is going on. The contrast between the teams on right now and the teams are used to run clear. In the past, people did what they had to do to keep their job with the companies I ran. Today, people see work as their safe place and do everything they can to show up for each other.

For many of us, it feels like the world is more chaotic than it ever has been. We are dealing with a number of crisis situations as a society and as a global population. There are political issues in many countries, social issues in the same countries, medical issues that the entire globe is dealing with, and radical financial and economic issues. The world is as chaotic as it has been in my lifetime. Times like this can provide a specific advantage to us as entrepreneurs. If we are able to focus and maintain our momentum, while the rest of the world is in chaos, we can quickly get ahead and gain an advantage. In this episode, I share more about how to make sure you don't just maintain your momentum but you increase it and turn this into a massive period of growth for yourself.

We help entrepreneurs around the world grow and scale their businesses in our coaching memberships. One of the comments or questions we are getting often today is "what do I do when I feel like I am drowning?" Variations of this question are when I feel like I am falling? When I feel accelerated? When I feel reactive? There is no question why so many of us are feeling this way today. The world is arguably more confusing and overwhelming than it has been in a long time. There's more conflict around us than I have ever felt in my life. For us as entrepreneurs, the faster we can get out of these feelings and back into momentum, the better we feel and the more we accomplish. In the video, I share the advice we share with our members, some of it will feel counterintuitive if you are in a moment of reactivity, but we know from helping hundreds of entrepreneurs, this work will change everything about how you respond to challenges.

This morning we had an issue with a member of our team. Eddie who works with us missed a couple of the deliverables that he is responsible for each week. He reached out to Hayley our director of operations and she reached out to Cadey and I and the four of us connected. The second we got on a zoom call, I could tell how badly he was beating himself up. Had this been years ago, I would've reacted. I would've gotten angry, I would've raised my voice, I would've made sure he knew just how angry I was that he had missed deliverables. This morning I handled it completely differently. It's amazing how experience and perspective can change how you show up. There has been far too much collateral people damage in my career, I am determined to minimize that in the future.

These days, if you watch most thought leaders in the entrepreneurial space, you will probably think that in order to grow a business and do well, you have to live in a world of chaos. Getting things done at the last minute, pulling all nighter's, making everyone around you work until the very last minute, seems to be the way to create success. Don't get sold on this lie. The reality is the most successful businesses in the world, eliminate chaos, lower pressure and noise, and create a safe environment for all of their team members. Companies that are working in this level of chaos are successful in spite of it not because of it.

You can build a business that makes an impact on the world. The topics discussed in this episode are things Alex has rarely been asked about, and the emotional conversation is one that will leave you with a better understanding of yourself as an entrepreneur and how you can make your greatest contribution. Sometimes as entrepreneurs, we are in such a hurry to help someone, or even correct someone, that we invalidate them without trying. Here is the scenario, someone asked you for advice, and without any clarification, you get it because you think you know the answer. You may actually have the right answer, and know exactly what they need, but if you have not clarified with them, they probably are not going to trust it.

As a CEO, and a coach, and even a father, I use the Two-Question Rule to make sure that my advice is heard, and it's actually helping.

In 2011 we had the 21st fastest-growing company in the country. We were on the Inc. 500 List, then again in 2012 and 2013. We even won Best Places to Work awards all three years. We did so well, we sold ourselves out of an opportunity and ended up having to cut the size of our company and do layoffs.

So many companies right now are in the same situation. Where your business has shifted, numbers have gone down, and it is time to make cuts. This is one of the most difficult things we go through as entrepreneurs, and it's also one of those things we rarely talk about.

Here's how we did it, and some of the big mistakes we made that you don't have to.

I just got off my Monday morning huddle and it uncomfortable. Two of my team members are dealing with personal issues that are keeping them up at night and making them anxious. They shared with our team what is going on and how they are feeling. All of us could tell just how difficult it is for both of them. I consider this a massive success. In most companies, when someone is uncomfortable, they may mention it and then say "I'm fine". I've seen this happen throughout my entire career. Once someone says they are fine, whatever the issue is gets swept under the rug and everyone moves on. Today one of our team members tried to say she was fine, and I reminded her that there was no way she could be and we would much rather have transparency than a veneer. When you create a space for your team to be transparent and real, you will create a space for them to feel safe.]

Sometimes when I share my story with people, it sounds unbelievable. The reason is, when you are telling someone your background, you only hit the highlights. most people don't share the challenging details. As entrepreneurs, it's important that not only we are aware of the challenging details of our stories, but that we are also radically transparent about them. That's how we learn, and the people around us learn. There are a lot of entrepreneurs out there that are afraid to share the challenging part of their background, they don't realize, is if they don't they miss sharing some of the most important lessons you've learned. Our biggest challenges, typically result in our biggest periods of learning and growth. This is the mistake that drove me to learn how to use attorneys and the law to keep me safe and business.
