In endurance, the whole game changes when you attempt a challenge that spans multiple days. Whether it’s a 200+ mile trail race, a long fastpacking trip, or a thru-hike, you’ll be facing a ton of obstacles that never appear on a traditional 1-day ultra.
And if there’s someone who has mastered conquering those obstacles in multi-day events (while also having a hell of a lot of fun doing it), it’s today’s guest: Jeff Garmire.
Jeff is a pro endurance athlete and an accomplished thru-hiker who has broken 17 trail records, including the Colorado Trail Unsupported FKT, the Arizona Trail self-supported FKT, and Long Trail unsupported FKT. He’s also completed the Calendar Triple Crown which consists of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail, and Continental Divide all in one year. And most recently, he placed 5th in the Cocodona 250, which was his second completion of that race. This dude is simply incredible!
Jeff is also the founder of backpackingroutes.com, which is a website that’ll help you find your next backpacking routes and adventures. He is also the author of the book, The Free Outside.
In this episode, Jeff discusses his best advice to tackling multi-day endurance events, how he approaches training for these events, and what his favorite mental hacks are for tricking your brain to keep going when you hit the inevitable low points.
