On the morning of Saturday, July 30, 2011, the weather in Sydney Australia was perfect. On Liverpool Street, people were having breakfast at the Canopy Café on the bottom floor of a new upscale 34-floor apartment building called The Hyde. The area was a buzz with people enjoying a meal, walking to work, and going about their usual day. Only, this day would turn out to be anything but usual. At 9:55 AM, numerous people were jolted from their activities and witness to something they will likely never forget.

Late in the evening on Friday, January 8, 1993, the employees in one particular restaurant in Palatine Chicago didn’t know at the time that they would not be going home that night. Hours after these workers began their closing routine, all seven of their bodies would be discovered inside of Brown’s Chicken, a popular restaurant chain. Upon entering the bloody scene, officer Ron Conley dispatched backup saying “Five in the cooler.” This tragedy was the worst mass murder in the Chicago area since 1966 when Richard Speck murdered eight student nurses in their dorm. It would take nine long years for authorities to receive a break in the horrendous case widely known as the Brown’s Chicken Massacre.

On a Summer day in 1997, Lance Butler and a friend drove into the Rockies west of Denver. The pair pulled over to dip their feet into the stream below. A glance toward the water’s edge revealed a horrific sight. There, wedged between two rocks, was the lifeless body of a female dressed only in blue jeans. It was 14-year-old, Brandy DuVall, who’d been reported missing by her mother the day prior. Her injuries told the tale of a merciless crime. Months later, a tip led investigators to several suspects who’d go on trial for her murder. As it turned out, the tip resulted from an “unwilling witness” who said he hadn’t stopped the murder because he was afraid for his life.

On October 27, 1988, McLean County Coroner William Anderson had just come from the Central Catholic vs. University High School football game. Afterward, he was due to meet with members of his re-election campaign to go over strategies. Before the meeting, Anderson was volunteered by the others to get beer for the meeting. He went to the closest store, S&S Liquor Store, located at 703 N. Clinton Street in Bloomington-Normal Illinois. Anderson grabbed a six-pack and headed home for the strategy session. Just two to three minutes later, after having made it only a few blocks, Anderson’s pager went off, alerting him to go back to S&S Liquor Store. When he returned, he stepped straight into one of the worst tragedies in the town’s history. Join me as I walk you through the tragedy known as the S&S Liquor Store Murders.
