Episode 138: Dr. Emilie Scott and Dr. James Gaor of Halcyon Health DPC - Irvine, CA

Dr. Emilie Scott believes that the best health care comes from a meaningful partnership between her and her patients. She has found that direct primary care is a great way to facilitate this.  She is originally from Orange County, Ca.  She trained at the Mount Sinai Beth Israel Residency in Urban Family Medicine in New York, NY. She completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine with Dr. Andrew Weil.  She loves to teach and is an assistant professor at UCI, having won the teaching award in 2010. She enjoys spending time with her awesome husband and being a kid with her two kiddos.

Dr. James Gaor was born and raised in California, but ventured out to the East Coast to become board certified in Emergency Medicine after training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. He is a self-described technology geek and enjoys the thrill of finding simplicity within chaos. James feels that Direct Primary Care is leading healthcare into the 21st century. In his spare time, James wishes he has more spare time, to trail run, cook and eat real food, and spend time with his wife and 2 kids.

They opened Halcyon Health in 2016.

Episode 134: Dr. Tami Singh of Aspire Health - Plantation, FL

Dr. Tami Singh is board-certified in both Family Medicine and Functional Medicine. She attended Ross University & received her Doctor of Medicine and undergraduate degrees from the University of South Florida. After training, she joined a multi-specialty practice in 2010, Clark and Daughtrey, a physician-owned group.

Her patient panel grew to over 4,000 patients in 7 years. She and her staff always strived for a patient’s experience in the office to be a pleasant one. However, the physician-owned practice soon merged with a large hospital, and the family feel of the office was lost. Many of the personal touches disappeared and patients felt like a number. This convinced her to seek alternative options to better care for her patients. The obstacles her patients encountered, along with her drive why she became a physician motivated her to open Aspire Health.

The DPC membership at Aspire Health allows her to devote quality time to her patients and their families, getting to know them on a more in-depth level. The close relationship she develops and the time she spends with patients are personally important to her. This is the foundation of exceptional health care. In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering at the Miami Rescue Clinic, teaching, traveling, working out, yoga, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends.

Episode 133: Dr. Adelola Ashaye of InTouch Primary Care - Sugar Land, TX

Dr. Adelola Ashaye is a Board Certified Family Physician and Lifestyle Medicine Physician. Her interest in the medical field was first sparked when she was in high school, by her observation of a patient-doctor relationship.

Many years have passed since that interaction which took place at Alpena General Hospital in Michigan, and it is the desire to build and maintain meaningful long-lasting relationships that continues to draw her to medicine.

After graduating high school, she went on to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where she obtained a B.S. in Cognitive Science and Biopsychology. Then, she graduated from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago IL with a Medical Degree. She completed her residency in 2010 at MacNeal Family Medicine Residency, affiliated with the University of Chicago IL.

In this episode...
Dr. Ashaye reveals that her experiences with patients receiving inadequate care led her to question her purpose in medicine. She felt frustrated by the lack of effective follow-up and wanted to make a more significant impact. Discovering the Direct Primary Care model aligned with her vision of providing better care based on relationships and patient choice, regardless of insurance status or employment.

She acknowledges the limitations of fee-for-service care, where patients' insurance changes or losses can disrupt continuity. The Direct Primary Care model offered a solution that allowed her to provide the type of care she had envisioned when she became a doctor.

Episode 132: Dr. Nitin Gupta of Rivertowns Pediatrics - Dobbs Ferry, New York

Nitin Gupta, M.D., F.A.A.P, is a board-certified general pediatrician who has a passion for delivering the best possible care for your child. After earning a bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Sciences: Physiology and Metabolism from the University of California at Berkeley, he graduated from St. George’s University School of Medicine and completed his residency in pediatrics at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School. He also trained at Weill Cornell Medical College in Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition.

Dr. Gupta’s adventurous career spans from working in the inner cities of New York and New Jersey to the far reaches of rural Maine. He has spent years working in the Emergency Department at The Brooklyn Hospital Center and in Urgent Care at PM Pediatrics. He enjoys teaching and even filmed a pilot episode for a medical talk show!

Originally from California, Dr. Gupta and his wife moved to Dobbs Ferry with their two young children, where they enjoy taking advantage of the great outdoors. In his free time, Dr. Gupta can be found hiking the trails of Westchester County, walking his dog through town or paddle-boarding on the Hudson River. Dr. Gupta is also an active member of Rivertowns Rotary whose motto is “Service Above Self.”

Dr. Nitin Gupta, a pediatrician, shares his journey to becoming a doctor and specifically choosing pediatrics as his specialty. He discusses his upbringing in an Indian immigrant family, where his father and other family members were engineers, and his decision to pursue medicine despite his father's preference for him to become an engineer. Dr. Gupta recounts how his father's heart attack at a young age made him realize the importance of healthcare and mortality.

Episode 131: Dr. Shannon Scholl of GastroDirect - Raleigh, NC

Dr. Scholl graduated Summa cum Laude from NC State and earned her medical doctorate and Master's in Public Health from UNC at Chapel Hill while raising her two girls. She was in an area private practice for 14 years but became unhappy with the traditional way of providing medical care, which puts an emphasis on numbers rather than people. When her daughter became ill, she took a hiatus and decided to explore other ways of delivering care. She enjoys getting to know patients as individuals and has had the privilege of caring for generations of patients within many families - the highest imaginable praise.

In addition to the Western medicine in which she trained at UNC, Dr. Scholl is well-versed in data-supported functional GI medicine, including leaky gut. She is proud to be The Plant Fed Gut Masterclass certified.

Dr. Shannon Scholl, a gastroenterologist, discusses her transition from a fee-for-service job to becoming a direct specialty care doctor.

Dr. Scholl discusses how the direct primary care model allows her to prioritize her patients and spend more time understanding their needs.
