When the beauty industry throws around terms like “clean,” “sustainable,” and “cruelty-free,” it all sounds well and good. But what does it actually mean? For this solo episode, I partnered with Ulta Beauty to break down the ambiguous terminology and to share my personal journey in establishing a conscious (but not perfect) skincare routine. When it comes to tapping into your most authentic self, Bozoma Saint John is unmatched. With an exceptionally fruitful career at companies like PepsiCo, Beats, Uber, and now Netflix, one might think that Saint John has always played by the corporate rulebook. That couldn’t be further from the truth. With an endless array of bold lipsticks, hairdos, and fits, she is living proof that a Black woman's right to self-expression and beauty doesn’t have to deter her right to success. Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye, my dear friend and founder of the newly-launched Ami Colĕ, is back on Naked Beauty! “Clean beauty wasn’t a thing for me. Clean beauty is all I knew.”- Nyakio Grieco

Back in 2002, before clean beauty was cool and before Black-owned beauty was considered a mainstream selling point, Nyakio Grecio set out to bring her Kenyan grandmother’s coffee scrub to the masses. Growing her eponymous brand Nyakio was of course no easy feat, but after experiencing the racial tension of last summer, she knew that her work could not stop there. Now, Nyakio has launched Thirteen Lune, a new one-stop shop for beauty primarily owned by Black founders and other founders of color.
