Narcissistic rage happens in conjunction with narcissistic injury, which is when a narcissist feels his or her fragile ego might be shattered with one more blow.

The narcissist never wants to be wrong or otherwise exposed and in their minds, their outrage should (and often does) stop a person's criticism of them - and the narcissistic supply gets the brunt of it.
