In this podcast episode, Dr Supriya speaks with family lawyer Matthew Taylor about Final Hearings in UK Family Law proceedings. In these hearings, both parties are cross-examined, under oath, on the witness stand. Matt gives tips on how best to prepare for these hearings, and we discuss the particular issues that may arise when a narcissistic spouse or ex is involved. 

Matthew is a solicitor and Partner at Napthens in Liverpool. He specializes in financial cases in divorce, and also in financial cases where the couple were not married -  and he has a special interest in representing victims of narcissistic abuse. 

Matthew also works on initiatives ranging from educating legal professionals to campaigning for law reform, and he’s the co-vice chair of the Pensions, Tax and Financial Remedy Committee of the UK family lawyer’s organization “Resolution”. 

He is a regular legal contributor to Martin Lewis’ Money Show Live,  and has appeared on Martin’s BBC podcast, on numerous legal podcasts, as well as on The Times podcast. 

Matt's experience is with the family court of England and Wales, but many of the tips specific to narcissism may well be relevant across legal jurisdictions. As ever, please do take legal advice in your country to make sure.

In this episode, leading consultant clinical forensic psychologists Professor Cooke and Dr Logan speak with Dr Supriya about the importance of the expert witness psychologist (who is being asked to look for personality disorders for the court)  being provided with evidence relevant to the case. 

They talk about how they triangulate evidence from different people, the importance of speaking with people who know the  suspected personality disordered person, and they discuss what sort of written evidence they need. They also talk about the importance of face-to-face assessments, and how it can be beneficial to see the person in their own home, as well as in other settings. 

Supriya drills down with them into what a lawyer's letter of instruction to the psychologist should contain, to make sure that the important questions are being answered by the expert. 

They also discuss the common problem of lawyers refusing to ask the court for specialist psychologist personality assessments, and the reasons for this.

In this episode, top forensic psychologists Professor David Cooke and Dr Caroline Logan discuss with Dr Supriya what to look for on a resumé if looking for a competent psychologist to assess your narcissistic ex for the family court. They discuss the common error made by the courts in instructing psychiatrists to carry out personality assessments, and the potential issues that result. Professor Cooke and Dr Logan also talk about their upcoming workshop for psychologists who act as expert witnesses for the family courts, which is designed to further hone their diagnostic skills when it comes to personality disorders.
