In 2017, Lou Alpert turned on CNN to see her daughter, Crystal eight-months pregnant, homeless and about to inject herself with heroin in an alley. The baby was born three weeks later and adopted by the Officer Ryan Holets and his wife. President Trump mentioned them in his State of the Union Address and CNN did a bunch of follow-up stories. Crystal became the poster child for America’s opioid crisis, as her mom watched it all play out on national TV. In a new memoir, Lou Alpert describes what it’s like to be the loved one of a person gripped by addiction. The book is called, “Surrender: A love Letter to My Daughter”.
