Last week I attended a writing workshop through Scribe. 

It was an amazing experience, but one of the most meaningful parts was getting clear on who I can help best.

In this episode, I describe clearly the type of person with the type of problem I feel especially able to help with.

I call him John.

John is a professionally successful Christian man who has a good marriage… except for the sex.

But, if you dig a little deeper, you’ll see that it’s really a deep sense of feeling trapped.

He tries so hard to make his wife happy, but it never translates to sex.

He feels he’s getting all the responsibilities of marriage with none of the benefits.

He wants to be committed to his wife sexually, but since she won’t have sex with him, what is he supposed to do?

He sometimes turns to pornography, then feels guilty about this. He sometimes thinks he’d be better off with another woman (like maybe women at work or even at church who admire him), then feels guilty about those thoughts.

He’s asked his wife to have more sex, but it never results in lasting change.

What is John to do? He wants to be a good man, and he feels like he’s being a good husband. Checking off the boxes of what should result in him having a great marriage and a great sex life.

But it’s not working. And leaving his wife or turning to pornography or another women don’t line up with his Christian values.

He feels extremely frustrated and trapped.
