  • Damian Hall runs an FKT on the Pennine Way!
Episode 92 is an interview and discussion with Damian Hall. Damian Hall recently entered the ultra running record books by breaking the Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the 268-mile (431.48kms) Pennine Way. Now ratified as 61hrs 35mins Damian’s time bettered that of American ultra runner John Kelly, who just a week earlier had run it in 64hrs 46mins. Prior to that the record had stood unbeaten for 31 years, belonging to Mike Hartley, who ran 65hrs 20mins in 1989. The Pennine Way is Great Britain’s oldest – and arguably toughest – National Trail, twisting its way from Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders to Edale, Derbyshire, and including a section along Hadrian’s Wall. Much of it is over remote, boggy hills, with a total ascent that exceeds the height of Mount Everest. Popular with hikers, who usually complete it in 16-19 days, Damian did it in just two-and-a-half, battling sleep exhaustion and all manner of tough weather conditions along the way. When he’s not running, Damian is a coach and a journalist and author with more than 20 years' experience of writing for and editing magazines, newspapers, books and websites.

  • Ben Lindsay talks shin splints.
Episode 91 is an interview and discussion Ben Lindsay, founder of the company Solushin. Ben was an athlete who suffered from shin splints and wasn’t impressed by available ways of dealing with them. So, in conjunction with other athletes he developed system to deal with shin splints. I know for myself, in my early days of running I got shin splints that I ignored, mainly because I didn’t know what they were! I continued ignoring them until they turned into stress fractures!! I think we all make silly mistakes when we are new runners! Knowledge is power, and the more we know about the different injuries runners can sustain, and the more we know about the available treatments, the better off we will be. I hope this podcast offers you some insights into how to avoid or treat this injury.

  • Matt Fitzgerald: The Comeback Quotient
Episode 88 is a third interview with the brilliant and prolific author Matt Fitzgerald. Last time I interviewed him about his book How Bad Do You Want It? which discusses the mindsets required for running well. This interview focuses on his latest book The Comeback Quotient, A get Real Guide to Building Mental Fitness in Sport and Life.
I will read you the online description of his book:
A good comeback makes a great story. In The Comeback Quotient, sports journalist Matt shares the stories of top athletic comebacks, to give you inspiration and tools for your own comeback in sport or life.
Every sports fan loves a great comeback. Is there a special quality shared by top athletes who triumph over great challenges? And can anyone acquire it? In The Comeback Quotient, Matt supplies the answer to both questions. He identifies these mega-achievers of astounding athletic comebacks as 'ultrarealists,' men and women who succeed where others fail by fully accepting, embracing, and addressing the reality of their situations. From ultrarunners like Rob Krar to triathletes like Mirinda Carfrae to rowers, skiers, cyclists, and runners all over the world, Fitzgerald highlights and speculates on just what makes these comebacks so compelling. As for whether anyone can stage his or her own great comeback, the answer is a resounding yes: Anyone can become an ultrarealist to some degree.
In the tradition of How Bad Do You Want It?, The Comeback Quotient combines gripping sports stories with mind-blowing science to deliver a book that will forever change how you perceive the challenges you face, giving you the inspiration and the tools to make the next great comeback you witness your own.

  • Maggie Guterl; amazing ultra runner and first woman to win Bigs Backyard.
Episode 86 is an interview with the amazing athlete Maggie Guterl. Maggie made headlines when she won Big’s Backyard Ultra in 2019, a ‘last man standing’-style event run by Lazarus Lake (organiser of the infamous Barkley Marathons) which sees runners cover a 6.7km loop on repeat. Each lap must be completed within an hour and starts again on the hour and after that, it’s a battle to see which competitor outlasts the rest. Maggie completed 60 laps to cover a mind-boggling 402.5kms and win it outright – the first woman to do so. Maggie has also competed for Team USA at the IAU 24-Hour World Championships, she’s won the Brazos Bend 100-miler outright, come second at the Georgia Death Race and 8th at Western States, amongst other things. IN this interview we discuss her win at Bigs and what it will take to succeed at Barkley in 2021.
I used to think that to get running injuries sorted, one needed to see a physio. How wrong was I! I have been seeing Luke Nelson, chiropractor at Health and High Performance in Mont Albert. Luek is a sports chiropractor who specialises in runners. He has been amazing at helping get on top of the niggles I have had since GSER back in 2019. Let Luke help you get on top of any niggles or injuries you may have now, so that you can enjoy running again and get back to preparing for the upcoming race season or just so that you run pain free! • Abby Coleman; sports scientist
Abby Coleman (sports scientis with Precision Hydration) and I go over some running myths and listener questions:
    · Can you overload on sodium/have too much? Is too much sodium bad for you?
    · Is more than 2% dehydration detrimental to performance?
    · Do women and men have different hydration needs?
    · Can you just drink water to thirst?
    · What’s the most efficient way for a cool climate runner to adapt to training and racing in the tropics?
    · Salt tablets: when you consider taking salt tablets? Ie, if you’re running longer than a set period of time? Or if you’re a heavy or light sweater? Or are they not necessary?
    · Is it true that during taper and post-race we need to increase our fruit and vegetable intake because when we slow down or reduce training after weeks of building up our immune system is compromised therefore we get sick?
    · What is the effect of a job where we do a lot of standing/walking/lifting and bending. Can this be included as training? Do we need to take it into consideration when planning our training?
    · Is the 10% rule on increasing mileage really true?
    · When running in the heat of summer, what sort of leeway should we give ourselves when it comes to pace?
    · How many ultra races a year should we do as A races?
Here is the link to the blog we discussed: How to START hydrated and why that's so important

Mash01 wrote “This podcast is essential listening not just because there are far too few women who dedicate precious hours of their busy lives to share their passion, knowledge and learning. Isobel has chosen fascinating people to have great conversations with. She has a talent to turn even the relatively mundane topics (e.g. nutrition or the importance of exercising other than running ;-) into thought- provoking discussions. Every episode is different in content but exudes Isobel’s enthusiasm for the sport and admiration/appreciation of the people she is talking to and the topics she is discussing. Thank you for the great company along long runs, and while cooking/cleaning/ironing.” Thank you so much for your heartfelt words and five stars and I am so happy to keep you company. • Catra Corbett: Reborn on the run.
Episode 84 is an interview with Catra Corbett. Before she was an ultrarunner, she was a drug addict, a hair stylist. a go-go dancer, a daughter, and a friend to many. The drugs led her to drop out of high school, develop an eating disorder, and damage her relationship with her family. Catra eventually found herself in jail. That was the start of her turn-around.
In 1996, two years after being clean and sober, Catra started to dig myself out of a pretty dark hole — starting exercising by lifting weights and walking. She never liked running when she was a kid, but her dad (who died unexpectedly when Catra was seventeen) had planted a seed in her head about how long distance runners can work through all kinds of pain and accomplish truly remarkable things. One day she just started running.
Decades later, Catra is one of the few humans who has completed more than one hundred 100-mile races. She runs every single day, and it has completely transformed her life.

  • Adharanand Finn; Rise Of The Ultra Runners
Episode 83 is an interview with the author Adharanand Finn. Adharanand Finn is the author of Running with the Kenyans (2012) and The Way of the Runner (2015). The first of these was the Sunday Times Sports Book of the Year, won Best New Writer at the British Sports Book Awards and was shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book Award. He is a journalist at the Guardian and also writes regularly for the Financial Times, the Independent, Runner's World, Men's Health and many others. A description of the book says; Marathons are no longer enough.
Pain is to be relished, not avoided.
    Hallucinations are normal.
Ultra running defies conventional logic. Yet this most brutal and challenging sport is now one of the fastest-growing in the world. Why is this? Is it an antidote to modern life, or a symptom of a modern illness?
Adharanand Finn travelled to the heart of the sport to find out - and to see if he could become an ultra runner himself. His journey took him from the deserts of Oman to the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies, and on to his ultimate goal, the 105-mile Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc.
The Rise of the Ultra Runners is the electrifying, inspirational account of what he learned along the way. Through encounters with the sport's many colourful characters and his experiences of its soaring highs and crushing lows, Finn offers an unforgettable insight into what can be found at the boundaries of human endeavour.
