Ted Jedynak lives in Adelaide, South Australia and he is the Master of the Foot Mobilisation Technique (FMT). During our conversation, we discuss how Ted's mindset shifted from running a traditional podiatry practice to creating a 100% foot mobilisation business, and how this shift has led to him teaching and speaking all over the world.

I was a guest on his podcast Episode 22, and he was a guest on my podcast Episode 53 - Fake Gurus and Patient Retention.

Dave James is UK based, and he is known as The Foot & Leg Magician. Dave was first introduced to the podiatry because he had a hole in his foot, and no he didn't pull a rabbit out of it, but it was responsible for him making a pivotal career shift from nursing to podiatry.

He started his podiatry career quite late and graduated when he was 34-years of age.

On this episode we discuss:

• Why he eventually left the NHS and the safety net of a secure weekly wage to pursue a dream of having a full-time business.

Some podiatrists will say you cannot charge the same fees to patients in lower economic areas. This is not true; it's just a mindset. These same patients will be taking overseas trips and driving new cars, and if they can do that, they can also pay accordingly.

"The only geography that's a problem in business is the geography between your ears."

Coaching, Mentoring & Public Speaking

A challenge was given to Dave to shoot two, two-minute videos, for 14-days, which meant he would eventually shoot 28 videos in two weeks.

Dave openly admits his first video was not very good, but it was authentic, which is more important. Also, when you start creating content, it has a flow-on effect.

"Content breeds content, it's like putting two rabbits together".

Initially, his information videos were for his patients, but the more he started doing, the more questions he was getting from other podiatrists and so coaching and mentoring took its path.

"Every business will have A, B, C, and D patients and it's important to limit your exposure to C's and D's".

Categorising patients from A to D is essential, but you must do the same in all areas of your life. You will face C and D referrers, forums and social media pages, and other podiatrists, so avoid them when you can and be inspired by the A's and B's in your life.

When you think footwear and biomechanics Simon Bartold's name should immediately spring to mind. He has worked with elite athletes for more than three decades, been to four Olympic Games, lectured in 42 countries, worked with Asics for 20-years and was head hunted by global footwear company Salomon to head up research, design and development of their road running range.

Simon explained that he worked with some of the best sporting clubs and sports practitioners after graduating, and he did this for almost 15 years before he was ever paid a cent, it was all done for FREE. But as he puts it, you cannot put a price on the experience he gained.

"If you want to learn and get emersed in something you love, you have to do it for nothing, that's just the way it works".

Opportunities Arose

If you're passionate and have a mindset for wanting to learn more doors will open for you. It was through the sporting connections he made that he was offered to be the podiatrist for the Adelaide 36er's.

Once the doors opened more and more, opportunities arose. Not too long afterwards Simon was offered a position with Asics after he became quite vocal about how poorly constructed footy their boots were.

Upskilling

If you have an interest in a particular area of podiatry you need to start upskilling in that area and make an effort to learn more than anyone else. Over time your knowledge will become superior to other people, and you will be noticed, and invitations to speak will come your way, opening up even bigger doors internationally.

Staying Motivated

Simon has never had a problem getting out of bed on a Monday morning because he loved what he did each day.

"Don't focus on making money, instead focus on being better and the money will come".

Rainmaker Days

You need to block out time in your week to make things happen in your business and time to talk with key people in your team.

It must be a full day, not just a few hours, and it needs to be planned hour hour-by-hour what you're going to be doing during the day. If you do not plan out your day, it's easy for other people's agendas to fill your time, resulting in an unproductive day.

Business Growth

The team you have now that took your business to $500,000 per annum may not be the same team that grows your business to $1,000,000 and beyond. But for the money to increase, you must also change.

Marketing Mistakes

Like a lot of other business people, not just podiatry, Tony has made his fair share of mistakes.

He learnt early on that you're better to concentrate on a small audience and repeat your message often until it is saturated, then move on.

For example, if you're doing a letterbox drop, sending one flyer to 10,000 homes is less effective than sending the same flyer ten times to 1,000 homes. Frequency is the key.

In all forms of advertising and marketing fewer words = more success.
