Billboard reports record numbers for Taylor Swift’s appearance on New Heights. The outlet reports 9mn views on YouTube in the first twelve hours, and some data from Spotify - a “2,500% increase” in average streams, and female listeners up by 618%. However, in what might be a missed opportunity for podcasting, the ART19-hosted podcast from Wondery hasn’t published any data about podcast downloads, leaving the press to just report on video.
Podscribe reports that the show had just 7 ads (a 3% ad load). Brand suitability tools marked the show as a medium risk - it noted seven uses of the word “torture” (it’s in her latest album release title), a mention of “blow up” (about balloons), and two uses of the word “shooting”, both related to life goals. The show had 20 swears in it, mostly the f-word and the s-word.
The LinkedIn Podcast Network is to close, we understand. The network launched in 2022, and signed a strategic partnership with iHeart a year ago; however, most shows have been stripped of LinkedIn branding.
Two of the largest shows, Negotiate Anything and The Anxious Achiever, have moved to YAP Media, joining a roster of business podcasters.
Exclusive: No second chances. 41% - almost half - of listeners will not give a podcast a second try if the first impression disappoints them. That is another key finding from The Podcast Study: Growth, the results of which will be revealed next week at Podcast Movement (Wed 12.15pm, Keynote Stage). Hal Rood told Podnews: “Your first 10 to 60 seconds is your audition, and you only get one shot to earn a listener’s trust. If the open drags, lacks clarity, or makes people feel excluded, they will move on quickly and likely never come back.”

Libsyn has announced it has now paid over $100mn in creator payouts. Year-on-year, the company paid-out 40% more revenue between Jan-Jul 2025. Senior members of the team will be at Podcast Movement next week.
Exclusive: Rhapsody Voices has announced a spin-out from Evergreen Podcasts, and has relaunched as a boutique agency focused on the podcast and creator economy. Evergreen is leading a new round of investment. The network will be led by Mike Jensen and Harris Lane. (The company will be at Podcast Movement).
How are Gen Z listening to podcasts? Coleman Insights and Amplifi Media have worked with Transistor to produce new data. YouTube is dominating as Gen Z’s preferred podcast app; podcasts are mostly discovered through social media; and there is a stark difference, the data says, in how 18-24 year-olds consume podcasts compared to 55-64 year-olds. (Justin Jackson from Transistor and Jay Nachlis from Coleman Insights will be at Podcast Movement.)

August 11, 2025“Unfiltered” podcasts on TV cancelled

In South Africa, satellite TV provider DStv announced it was putting eight video podcasts onto its TV channels. “This is ... a bold step into the future where linear television meets the gutsy, unfiltered world of digital storytelling,” says Shirley Adonisi, director for channel owner M-Net. But, the “unfiltered world” doesn’t always work with broadcast standards. Five months later, at least two shows have been cancelled, following “breaches of ethical standards”; one show, Open Chats, being dropped after racist comments that may be illegal (although that specific episode wasn’t brodcast). One affected podcaster said: “If DStv was looking for polish, they shouldn’t have gone down the podcast route.”
After Spotify returned podcast linking tool Podlink to its original developer, the service has now been rebuilt. The new Podlink has an updated list of podcast platforms that are sorted by popularity, the ability to set a default app, and highlights trailers. Its successor episodes.fm now redirects to Podlink; all existing links (for both) should continue to work.
The Empowered Podcasting Conference is to return to Charlotte NC, USA for its second year. The conference anticipates hosting between 150-200 attendees, “ensuring an intimate atmosphere that maximizes networking and meaningful connections”.

Consuming podcasts on TV has doubled in the UK in the past two years, according to Edison Research’s The UK Podcast Consumer 2025, which was released yesterday. The research also suggests that Spotify is the main podcast platform used in the country - BBC Sounds being more popular than Apple Podcasts.
Nielsen launched Nielsen Podcast Fusion, a new dataset powered by Edison Research. It integrates Edison Podcast Metrics into Nielsen’s widely used media planning tool, Nielsen Media Impact (NMI). NPR and Ocean Media are among the charter subscribers at launch.
For the first time in the US, 18-29 year-olds now listen to podcasts just as much as AM/FM radio. About ten years ago, AM/FM listening was seven times larger than podcast listening.

Apple Podcasts released its list of “Best So Far” shows - which “recognizes some of the best podcast shows and seasons since the beginning of the year.” The lists are localised for some countries - so Podnews today carries a list of all the countries we could find with a “best-of” list. It shows the focus of Apple - listeners in mainland Europe, most of Latin America and much of Asia don’t get a list, while Brazil is the only country we can find that lists non-English language podcasts in its Best So Far.

August 05, 2025Amazon cuts Wondery: 110 jobs to go

One of the biggest and most successful podcast producers, Wondery, is to be restructured by Amazon, laying off a reported 110 people including the company’s CEO, Jen Sargent. Wondery was bought by Amazon at the end of 2020 for $300mn, then doubled its staff. It currently has around 360 published shows.
Wondery’s narrative podcast studio will be combined with Audible. Marshall Lewy, Wondery’s Chief Content Officer, will also join Audible. The company’s creator-led shows (New Heights, Armchair Expert, etc) will be merged with the existing Talent Services team, rebranding to Creator Services. Ads and sponsorship will merge with a team at Amazon Music. Ads and sponsorship will create an entirely new team that includes the existing ad-sales team at Amazon Music.
The story was broken by Bloomberg in a paywalled article. (Podnews readers can save on a subscription). Business Insider carries the memo from Steve Boom explaining the changes, and noting that podcast revenue has grown by 4x since the company was bought by Amazon.
Why the change? Video killed the owl, it seems. The memo reads: “The podcast landscape has evolved significantly over the past few years. As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series. The rise of video has also blurred the lines on what it means to be a podcast creator.”
Amazon’s decision should be read alongside the performance of its other podcast acquisitions. Amazon bought podcast hosting company ART19 in June 2021, which has never achieved more than a 1% share of total episodes published, and currently hosts 3,900 shows (other enterprise hosts like Megaphone, Simplecast or Triton/Omny each host around 20,000). Amazon splashed $80mn on the SmartLess podcast: but that deal only lasted three years. Last year it spent $100mn for New Heights, promising international audio adaptations (which haven’t happened) and live events - there hasn’t been a live event for the show since Amazon’s ownership. Amazon Music started slowly adding podcasts in 2020; it has a 13% market share for music in the US, but achieves just a 1.6% share of US podcast downloads.

Edison Podcast Metrics released the top 50 US podcasts for Q2/2025. The top 5 is unchanged. Amy Poehler’s Good Hang is new in the top 50 (it debuted in mid-March). The Dan Bongino Show is the highest faller, now out of the top 50 after Bongino was replaced by Vince Coglianese.
Our list includes podcast hosting companies. Spotify’s Megaphone host 20, Simplecast from SiriusXM host 12, ART19 and Omny Studio host 5.
One notable change: Edison Podcast Metrics rankings now “incorporate data from people whose sole podcast consumption in the past week was through video”.
Riverside has quietly added podcast hosting, in beta, for its paying Pro or Enterprise users. Riverside uses RSS, so it’ll go everywhere RSS does.

What happens when one podcast has a very similar name to another - and they’re recording in the same building? Much confusion - particularly for one guest who gets taken into the wrong podcast studio. Brazil’s Camila Fremder, a writer and social media personality, thought she was appearing on the Venus Podcast: but accidentally took part in Vênus Day Talks instead. The smaller podcast is delighted; the bigger one is talking about legal action.
