  • S4E23: Faith Borkowsky and Judy Boksner on “what’s hot” in literacy

Hi everyone, Zach Groshell here. Avid readers of my website will know that I was recently on a show called The Literacy View, which is also one of the podcasts in my listening rotation. It was with great excitement that I was able to snag hosts Judy and Faith for a very Literacy View episode of Progressively Incorrect. Topics we talked about included:

    1. NAEP Scores and Post Pandemic Teaching

Today’s NAEP results reveal a heartbreaking reality for American students and confirm our worst fears: not only did most students not recover from pandemic-related learning loss, but those students who were the most behind and needed the most support have fallen even further behind. Despite the billions of dollars that the federal government invests in K-12 education annually, and the approximately $190 billion in federal pandemic funds, our education system continues to fail students across the nation.

    2. What’s Hot in Literacy: Misguided Trends in a Divided Field

The 2024 findings highlight three topics as “extremely hot:” banned books, phonics/phonemic awareness, and the science of reading and structured literacy. There are also six topics found to be “very hot,” including artificial intelligence in literacy, cultural and linguistic diversity and literacy for multilingual learners, dyslexia and other specific learning disabilities, early literacy, high-quality instructional materials, and social justice/equity/anti-racism in literacy. Overall, the literacy field has received unprecedented focus this year, driven by legislative mandates in 38 states, policies on the science of reading, book banning, and discussions on essential early literacy skills for long-term academic and career success.

  • S4E21: Judith Hochman, Christine Teahan, andToni-Ann Vroom on the writing revolution

As we get closer to Spring, I am excited to be working with The Writing Revolution as part of my consultancy. The Writing Revolution, or TWR, is an explicit instruction approach to writing that was created by Dr. Judith Hochman. This method has been celebrated by proponents of cognitive science as a solution that adheres to principles of cognitive load theory.

  • S4E20: Doug Carnine on advocacy for evidence

A few years ago, I came upon a paper titled, “Why Educators Resist Effective Practices” with the provocative subheading, And What It Would Take to Make Education
    More Like Medicine
. It was written by Douglas Carnine, who I would come to learn was not only one of the most important voices in advocacy for evidence-based education, but one of the world’s foremost experts in instructional design. I am honored that Dr. Carnine has joined us to talk about his extremely ambitious and promising project, The Evidence Advocacy Center.

  • S4E19: Thinking out loud … is rehearsal necessary for effective coaching and PD?

I am excited to bring you an episode of the Thinking Out Loud series with my friend, Gene Tavernetti, who is cross posting these episodes on his podcast, Better Teaching Only Stuff that Works.

During the episode, we talk about “rehearsal tasks”, which are simply practice opportunities that a coach or presenter can plan for teachers. During the podcast, I bring you some examples of rehearsal tasks that are built into a PD platform called Steplab:

Example of Rehearsal tasks for the action step, “Making Paired Talk Visible”

I encourage you to book a demo of Steplab and see it for yourself. Many overwhelmed principals might not be aware that a platform exists to scaffold and support their instructional leadership. Instructional coaches have largely improvised coaching without the help of a bank of techniques and a coaching engine. Just e-mail [email protected] and they’ll get you started.

In this episode, I chat with Blake Harvard, aka The Effortful Educator, about applying cognitive psychology to the classroom. Blake and I presented together as part of the cognitive science strand at EdFest USA this year, and we share similar perspectives on the importance of bridging the gap between research and practice. In this interview, we primarily focus on what he learned researching attention for his new book, Do I Have Your Attention?

Looking to Improve Your Coaching and PD Program?

As an instructional coach and school leader, I grew tired of bad PD and struggled to embed the ideas of this podcast into classrooms. I read the books, I went to the webinars, and I made up my own system by combining a hodgepodge of resources and strategies. I needed a better approach if I was going to make real and sustainable changes. One day I stumbled upon Steplab, which streamlined my coaching and enabled peer observation, targeted PLCs, and evidence-based whole school PD. Now, as the Director of Steplab North America, I want to invite you to join over 14,000 schools and 100,000 educators who are using Steplab.

This is the third conversation between Dr. Zach Groshell and Brendan Lee.

In their first episode, they unpacked the nuances of teaching effectively.
In the second one, they spoke about coaching, culture and change.

In today’s podcast, you will hear them discuss the complex world of school leadership! They explore the key elements that contribute to a positive and productive school culture. From going beyond superficial evaluation methods to building a diverse team that leverages everyone’s strengths, they cover a range of important topics that will help school leaders create a thriving learning environment for both students and teachers.

    Zach’s four points were:

    1. Leaders need to start minimizing evaluations and start maximizing teacher performance
    2. Leaders should view behavior as a system that involves everyone, including them
    3. Leaders don’t have to be the best teachers on earth, but they do have to know something about instruction
    4. Leaders should move away from one-off PD as the primary means of teacher training.
    5. Brendan’s four points were:

      1. Leaders need to have their fingers on the pulse
      2. Clear Communication is key
      3. Leaders need to build a diverse team
      4. Good leaders don’t care about who is right or wrong

      6. S4E14: Kim Lockhart on supporting L2 learners with the science of reading

Today I am excited to bring you an interview with Kim Lockhart. Kim’s work focuses on the science of reading and its application in second language programs. She has been a vocal advocate on social media for moving away from balanced literacy and adopting evidence-based approaches to teaching reading. When I first encountered Kim, it was through her fantastic videos of teaching her kids on the carpet. A special treat of this episode is we will watch one of them and talk about what was going on there. Kim’s insights have been instrumental in helping educators understand and implement effective literacy practices.

Steplab is a platform by teachers, for teachers, which streamlines coaching. It is both a library of techniques, similar to Teach Like a Champion, and a coaching engine that helps you to bring these techniques to teachers by scaffolding cycles of observation and feedback. It helped me become much more confident as a coach, and, as a comprehensive PD platform, it helps facilitate peer observation, targeted PLCs, and evidence-based whole school PD.
