  • S4E13: Catherine Thevenot on counting on your fingers

Should students be taught to count on their fingers? Today I am excited to bring you an interview with Catherine Thevenot. Catherine is a researcher at the Institute of Psychology at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. Her work focuses on cognitive development, particularly in the area of numerical cognition and arithmetic skills in children. One of her notable studies involves the impact of finger counting on young children’s math performance. Catherine’s research has shown that training children to use their fingers for counting can significantly improve their arithmetic skills, demonstrating a strong link between finger use and numerical understanding. Her work has provided valuable insights into effective teaching strategies for early math education.

Instructional coaching not working for your school?

As an instructional coach and school leader, I grew tired of bad PD and struggled to embed the ideas of this podcast into classrooms. I read the books, I went to the webinars, and I made up my own system by combining a hodgepodge of resources and strategies. I needed a better approach if I was going to make real and sustainable changes.

Steplab is a platform by teachers, for teachers, which streamlines coaching. It is both a library of techniques, similar to Teach Like a Champion, and a coaching engine that helps you to bring these techniques to teachers by scaffolding cycles of observation and feedback. It helped me become much more confident as a coach, and, as a comprehensive PD platform, it helps facilitate peer observation, targeted PLCs, and evidence-based whole school PD. As the Director of Steplab North America, I want to invite you to join over 14,000 schools and 100,000 educators who are using Steplab.

Welcome back to Progressively Incorrect, I am your host, Dr. Zach Groshell. This episode is a conversation between me and Sally Bergquist. Sally is an extremely talented and experienced teacher, and she recently challenged me to teach my child to write with her Engelmann-inspired writing program. It was an enormous pleasure to be able to pick Sally’s brain about how to teach writing to our youngest school children.

This is the second conversation between Dr. Zach Groshell and Brendan Lee. In this episode, they take a deep dive into some of the key considerations that schools need to take when it comes to instructional coaching.

    Zach’s four items were:

    • Schools need an instructional focus for coaching to be successful.
    • Coaching is not only about teaching techniques, but also about fostering teacher judgement.
    • Relationships with teachers should not overshadow the goal of coaching
    • Coaching cycles and drop ins don’t need to take all that long
    • Brendan’s four points were:

      • Coaches need to shrink the change
      • Coaching should feel like a development process, rather than a judgemental one
      • Participants need to own the problem
      • Get granular with goal setting
