Racism, Culture & Identity with Kimberly Teoh

Listen Later

Kim Teoh was born in Malaysia and at just 8 years old she moved to Australia with her family. Her Dad is Chinese and her Mum Eurasian (a mixture of European and Asian descent).
So while Kim is not Malay in race,  because she was born in Malaysia she is technically "Malaysian".  This alone has been something that Kim has struggled to explain throughout her life to those around her, and has caused many internal struggles with her own identity from a very young age.

In this episode Kim gives us an insight on her experience with Racism throughout her life and her struggles with her identity and figuring out where she fits in. Immigrating to a foreign country had its challenges (and still does too this day!)sometimes dictating her career path and ability to do things such a buy a house in the country she calls home.

Kim speaks about the derogatory abuse she has both witnessed and received throughout her life, her worst experiences with racism/bias and the lack of education when it comes to Race & Culture in this country.  We chat about the incredible sacrifice immigrants make financially and personally to call Australia home and what Kim wants people to learn from this conversation moving forward.

Here Kim explains how she feels about being an Australian;
"Legally I am not "Australian", but what makes someone Australian? Is it their skin colour?
Is it their accent?
Is it how much they contribute to the Australian economy? and how much tax they pay? or does it truly all come down to a piece of document that says "Australian citizen".
In my heart and soul, I know I am Australian and am meant to be here.
