In 1818, the English Romantic poet John Keats wrote that “poetry should strike the reader as a wording of his own highest thoughts, and appear almost a remembrance.” Perhaps this is why our storytellers reference poetry so often. Both mediums tell more than just events and feelings. They tell, teach, and sing something universal. Something so core to humanity that the listener thinks it came right out of their own mind.
