This is a book whose cultural significance is based more on the kind of story that it became a symbol of rather than the plot itself. Kellie and Daphne unpack the nuances and accuracy of the "manic pixie dream girl" label for Margo, along with road trips, discussions about metaphors, quirky character traits, and nerds getting kissed by cool girls. Dungeons & Dystopia, our YA book-themed Dungeons & Dragons actual play series has returned! This time, Dungeonmaster Colin is taking us through The Sovereign Trials in a game inspired by the world of The Hunger Games. In this episode, you'll meet the tributes and follow them through the high-stakes process of preparing for the Trials. Will our players band together or become instant enemies? How will they perform in their skills evaluations? And are they ready to do what it takes to survive?

It was another very close poll for our movie bonus episode this month, but the 2014 cinematic classic The Giver took the crown. It also took 97 minutes of our lives that we can never get back.

"There ain’t no pumpkin carriage."

Of all the books left on our list, Cinder by Marissa Meyer (2012) was by far the most requested by listeners. We dive into the fantastical, dystopian world of the Lunar Chronicles with its first installment, a Cinderella retelling with a sci-fi twist. This book has everything: cyborgs, androids, fairytale romance, a wicked stepmother, the plague, classic twists, heartbreaking turns of events, a colony of people on the moon, and lil diva foot come off. We hope it was worth the wait!

It's the end of an era, both for us and the people of Illéa. The patrons voted for us to read a Selection sequel for the final time (unless Kiera Cass decides to write more...). Book 5 in the series, The Crown, follows the second half of Princess Eadlyn's Selection. Will she bring democracy to her country? Will she find love with one of her suitors? Happy Pride Month! This year, our Patrons chose to celebrate by reading They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera (2017). If you were on BookTok in 2020, you're probably familiar with this speculative fiction story of two boys who receive a call from Death-Cast notifying them that they have less than 24 hours to live. We follow Mateo and Rufus through September 5, 2017, which was a great day...for being sad.

Along with a recap, we talk about Silvera's nontraditional journey to authorship, his very familiar inspirations, and the television adaptation. Give us Bad Bunny as Howie Maldonado, Netflix, PLEASE!

We had our Patrons vote on a selection of our most-requested dystopian and sci-fi books, and I Am Number Four (2010) by Pittacus Lore (allegedly...) won by a landslide. It's your typical fish-out-of-water story about the new boy in town trying his best to fit in and survive the semester with the help of the prettiest girl in school, an oddball best friend, and an unusually smart dog. But this teenager has a big secret...he's an alien. As it turns out, John wasn't the only one with something to hide.
