Today, I am blessed to have here with me Risa Groux. She was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that caused chronic inflammation and a host of other health issues. She became determined to find the root cause to reverse it without medications. 

With the proper testing and subsequent dietary and supplement treatment, Risa successfully and naturally reversed her symptoms. This inspired Risa to obtain her certification as an autoimmune specialist in addition to her clinical nutrition certification. This enabled her to help her clients focus on the root causes of their health concerns and treat them naturally through diet and supplementation. Risa focuses on foundational issues, including systemic inflammation, gut health, and lab testing to determine root causes.

[00:30] Risa Speaks About Her Background and Finding The Root Cause of Her Autoimmune Disease 

  • Risa grew up in a family where everybody was always on a diet.
  • She was fascinated by why some foods are considered good while others are considered bad.
  • At one point, Risa was having fertility issues. She found out that she had a low-functioning thyroid. 
  • The doctor gave Risa medication that she was supposed to take for the rest of her life. 
  • Eventually, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Risa had no idea why her thyroid was attacking itself. 

[07:15] What Risa Will Test For When It Comes To Thyroid Issues 

  • Risa tests for all nine markers of the thyroid. 
  • Then, Risa will help people create T4; it is 93% of the equation.
  • T4 needs to convert to T3; that is your active thyroid hormone, and it’s only 7% of the equation. 
  • When Risa tests for hormones, she looks at free and total. Free means it’s usable to the body, and the total is not useable. 
  • Plus, Risa will look at reverse T3; it’s when stress hormones could be pulling T3 and reversing it. 
  • Also, Risa looks at T3 uptake. It’s when sex hormones can compete with the thyroid.
  • Lastly, Risa looks at TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies.

[12:10] Risa Explains What Is Wrong With The Word “Diet” 

  • People associate diet with deprivation. 
  • We should not be depriving ourselves. 
  • If your children are hungry, you feed them. 
  • Diet has been marketed as a temporary deprivation for weight loss.
  • In reality, weight loss is a side effect of wellness. 
  • Instead, you need to eat real food to lose weight. 
  • You shouldn’t care about the numbers on the scale; instead, you should care about the numbers on the blood work.

  • The first step is to detox; you need to clean your body.

    • Remember, insulin resistance is 100% reversible. 
    • Risa will use keto for anyone who is diabetic or pre-diabetic. Also, if you have insulin resistance, Risa will suggest keto.

    [27:50] The Three Sweeteners That Risa Recommends For People Following Keto

    • There are three sweeteners that Risa highly recommends: 
      • Allulose
      • Monkfruit 
      • Stevia

    [33:45] C-peptide 2.0 or Higher Means You Have Insulin Resistance 

    • C-peptide is our most stable marker for insulin production.
    • You want that number at 1.5. 
    • Anything 2.0 or higher is insulin resistant. 
    • Inside every cell has mitochondria. The fuel for mitochondria is sugars. 
    • Those receptors are closed, broken, or hindered if you have insulin resistance. 
    • To gain weight, you need to close those cells. 
    • Another way to gain weight is to give your cells more than it needs. To lose weight, give cells less than they need. 

    [43:00] Why You Should Not Stay In Ketosis Forever 

    • The two primary goals of living organisms are to survive and to procreate. If you have issues surviving or reproducing, you need to see why.
    • Keto is great because it changes the fuel source from carbs to fat. 
    • Risa says ketosis is challenging to sustain, but it can be done.
    • If you feel great on keto, then that’s awesome! 
    • Don’t use keto as a diet; use it as a tool.
