Er spielte drei Saxofone gleichzeitig - so etwas hatte niemand zuvor gehört. Für manche nur eine "Zirkusnummer", buchten Veranstalter ihn als "Sensation". Mit viel Seele schlug Roland Kirk eine Brücke vom New Orleans Jazz über Soul bis zum Free Jazz.

Sein eigentliches Markenzeichen geht auf eine nächtliche Vision zurück. Er träumt davon, drei Saxophone gleichzeitig zu spielen. Am folgenden Tag sucht Kirk ein Musikgeschäft auf, im Keller des Ladens stößt er auf zwei historische Blasinstrumente, wie sie in spanischen Militärbands benutzt wurden: Manzello und Stritch. Mit einer speziellen Technik gelingt es ihm, das Tenorsaxophon mit der linken und die beiden anderen Instrumente mit der rechten Hand zu spielen. Für manche nur eine „Zirkusnummer“, buchten Veranstalter ihn als „Sensation“. Mit viel Seele schlug Rahsaan Roland Kirk eine Brücke vom New Orleans Jazz über Soul bis zum Free Jazz. Für ihn war all das kein „Jazz“, er zog den Terminus "Black Classical Music" vor.
