Happy Satiated Saturday!
I navigated patterns of binge eating for about a decade of my life. Decreasing these food behaviors took time, patience, and practice. It was messy. It was non-linear. It was intense and at times even fun.
I remember the first time I binged in front of my now husband and he looked at me with no judgment whatsoever and said, "well, how was that?"
You might be thinking, "Wait. You binged in front of someone!?!?!"
Binge eating behavior perpetuates when it stays in the dark where it can feel like a shameful act. Part of healing can be engaging in the food behaviors you normally do by yourself with a regulating presence around.
Binging in front of someone shifted something inside of me. It made me slow down and get really curious. Here I was choosing food to try to regulate my body and I noticed that what felt MORE regulating was talking and connecting with the person in front of me. I got the opportunity to observe how ineffective this food pattern was at giving me the sense of safety I was looking for.
Of course, just because I was aware of this didn't change the binging right away. That took time to transform.
In this week’s episode, I had an incredibly honest, inspirational, and profound conversation with Sarah Dosanjh, Psychotherapist and author, about her creative and messy journey to heal patterns of binge eating, ways to begin this binge eating healing adventure, and what this path actually looks like. Get ready. We go deep!
