A firm believer in focusing on the “why” rather than the “what”, Kiffanie advises artists to first decide what they actually need to meet their business goals, rather than just investing big in legal matters that may not be required at all in their specific circumstances.   In this episode, Kiffanie spells out the six basic rules that every professional artist must adhere to, to avoid getting caught in the legal net. She mentions some free templates available on her website that may be a good starting point for artists just beginning their art career. Kiffanie also talks about how easy it could be to gather tax and other legal information in your state – often just a phone call away. The impact of Hurricane Katrina is visible in Adam’s art, especially in his black-and-white, burnt-paper three-dimensional collages that explored themes of loss and upheaval. A visit to Paris in 2009 and the study of impressionist painters convinced him to switch to impressionist oil paintings. PJ is a California native, born in Santa Barbara + grew up in downtown San Francisco, where his affinity for graffiti and letter forms was born. He spent his earliest years beautifying the local transit system, before a show at the SFMOMA catapulted PJ into the world of fine art. Studied in illustration and computer animation, PJ went on to develop his repertoire of logo, music video and illustration work at his design studio Laundry which he co-owns and co-creative directs with longtime friend Anthony Liu.  In this episode, we chat about how we met through Union + Webster at WeWork in Santa Monica, his early years as a graffiti writer throughout San Francisco, his time in Maryland at MICA, making the jump to LA after graduation, taking the big leap to go from intrapreneur to entrepreneur with Laundry, working with blue chip brands like NASCAR, Airbnb. The National Portrait Gallery's Warren Perry discusses an 1866 painting of William Tecumseh Sherman by George Peter Alexander Healy.

"War is war and not popularity-seeking." With these words to his Confederate opponent at Atlanta, General William T. Sherman suggested the attitude that made him both a successful commander and a bitterly hated figure in the South. He stripped war of glory and chivalry. His destructive march through Georgia and his later campaign in the Carolinas dismantled the economic base of the Confederacy and shattered the morale of its citizens. His methods anticipated twentieth-century "total war."
Influenced perhaps by Sherman's reputation for severe tactics in the field, artist G. P. A. Healy once noted that he found the Union general a forbidding portrait subject at first. But as the posing progressed, he found the general quite friendly.

The National Portrait Gallery's Warren Perry discusses an 1863 sculpture of Benjamin Butler by Edward Augustus Brackett,.

Benjamin Franklin Butler was a Democratic politician in military garb fighting a Republican war, and he sorely tried the patience of Lincoln and his advisers. His heavy-handed administration of the military district of New Orleans in 1862 was especially controversial. Butler was accused of everything from issuing orders designed to harass female secessionists to pilfering the silver spoons from the house he occupied.

In the summer of 1864, Butler wrote his wife asking if she wanted to see him. If so, he continued, "Do the next best thing-send down to Brackett and get the marble bust he has done."

NPG historian David C. Ward discusses Jefferson Davis. While traveling in the United States in 1849, English-born artist George L. Saunders painted this miniature of the future president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis. At the time, Davis was a senator representing Mississippi. A few years afterward, a contemporary recorded this impression of Davis: "His slender, tall and erect figure, his spare face, keen eyes and fine forehead . . . presented the well-known strong American type. There was in his bearing a dignity which seemed entirely natural and unaffected, that kind of dignity which does not invite familiar approach but will not render one uneasy by lofty assumptions." Jefferson Davis, Portrait in a Minute

NPG historian David C. Ward discusses Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. At the First Battle of Manassas in July 1861, the unrelenting vigor with which Confederate General Thomas Jonathan Jackson held his position inspired a general nearby to rally his troops with the cry, "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall." From that moment on, he was known as "Stonewall" Jackson, a name that he repeatedly lived up to, fighting under the command of General Robert E. Lee. The deeply religious Jackson believed intensely in the righteousness of the southern cause, and a key to his success was his ability to instill his own fighting fervor in his men. One of his most brilliant victories came at Chancellorsville in the spring of 1863. Tragically for Jackson and the South, this would prove to be his last battle, as he died of wounds accidentally inflicted by his own men. Recorded at NPG, April 24, 2013

172 Welcome Back Sun and Moon

BLM RALLY This episode of the podcast is a conversation with people at the BLM rally in Spokane WA.  People go to protests to create action and be heard. But we often don’t actually sop, listen, and hear anyone or their inner thoughts.  We live in a world of over saturation due to social media. People racing to tell us what to think in 15 second sound bites or in 140 characters.  I wanted people to have a chance to voice their thoughts and ideas alongside others. Excluding one cop and the two homeless people at the end, all of the people in this episode are black and brown.  I’ve tried to keep the conversations unedited as much as possible. Unfortunately it was windy and I wasn’t prepared and had to trim a few things. I also removed myself a few times so the focus could be on their voices. Finally, there is a moment during “Between now and the next Killing” when the recorder stopped for 2 seconds. I 100% avoided manipulating their POV’s. Many of them are regular people. They’re not influencers. They’re not celebrities. They’re not thought leaders or authors. They’re people living life. I personally see what I learned and have some takeaways. Would I have changed some of my questions knowing what I know now? Yes, I cringe at some of my questions now. Would I have talked with more people? Yes, I definitely would and will do something similar to this episode again. The recorder ran out of space so unfortunately I had to stop when I did. Would I have carried something to block the wind? ABSOLUTELY (sorry everyone for the wind noise!). I kindly ask you listen with an open mind and heart when hearing myself, the protestors, and the cops during all of this. I’m trying to figure things out, they’re trying to be heard, they’re trying to do their job, and the world is telling us all what to do and how to think.  Below are the conversations you’ll hear.
