An epistolary novel, Lady Susan is an early work by Austen that was posthumously published in 1871. The short novel focuses on the self-serving eponymous anti-heroine, as she cunningly maneuvers her way through society in search of a wealthy husband for both her daughter and herself. Disregarding anything but her own selfish goals, Susan employs her charms to lure men and draw them into her web of deceit, no matter their age or status. Exploring issues including morals, manners, self-indulgence, malevolence, and social machinations, the relatively short novel is sure to fascinate with its atypical form.

The novel also focuses on Frederica, Susan’s timid 16-year old daughter, who is terrorized by her mother, as Susan tries to marry her off to the wealthy, yet fatuous Sir James Martin against her wishes. Furthermore, Susan’s skills in manipulation are confirmed when Catherine’s younger brother arrives to meet the notoriously scandalous woman, whose name is attached to many raffish rumors. However, having a way with words, Susan effortlessly manipulates and twists the disreputable gossip to her favor and even has the man converted to the position of advocate. Her true nature is revealed through her correspondence with her friend Alicia Johnson, to whom she reveals all her schemes, contrivances, and the true depth of her unscrupulous nature.

Austen effectively employs the epistolary format in her writing, allowing the audience to gain an insight into the characters, their emotions, schemes, and artifices. Unlike Austen’s most notable female characters, who are typically guided by principled objectives, Lady Susan is in contrast guided simply by her egocentric ways. French Self-Taught by Franz J. L. Thimm

A sequel to Nathaniel Hawthorne's earlier volume of Greek mythology interpreted and retold for young people, Tanglewood Tales includes more legends and tales of ancient heroes and monsters. In his earlier book, A Wonder-Book for Girls and Boys, Hawthorne had designed the book to be a book within a book. A young college student keeps a group of young children entertained by retelling Greek myths in a way in which they can easily understand.

Nathaniel Hawthorne also wrote a brief introduction to Tanglewood Tales, entitled The Wayside. Eustace Bright, the student in the earlier book, makes an appearance here too and reveals that he has compiled more such stories for his young audience.

Tanglewood Tales contains six famous stories. The first one is Theseus and the Minotaur, in which the Greek hero Theseus slays the terrible monster who lives in a Labyrinth below the palace of King Minos. He is helped by Princess Ariadne, who falls in love with the young stranger who comes to slay the fabled creature and deliver the citizens of the land from the evil beast.

The second story describes one of the incidents from the Odyssey. The Palace of Circe recounts the legend of the loathsome monster, Circe, who turns all people into beasts. How the brave Ulysses saves his men and other unfortunate people whom Circe has enslaved is told in an entertaining and exciting manner.

The legend of Prosperina, her mother Ceres the Earth Goddess and the dark ruler of the Underworld, Vulcan is told in the third story, The Pomegranate Seeds. The story of Antaeus, son of Poseidon and Gaia is retold in The Pygmies. This is a little known story, set in Africa and is based on both Greek and Berber legends.

The Dragon's Teeth is a delightful retelling of the myth of Europa and her brothers. One of the brothers, Cadmus, who is the only one of the family left behind after Zeus abducts Europa, slays a monstrous dragon who preys upon the surrounding villages. The goddess Athena advises Cadmus to sow the dragon's teeth in the ground and a race of fine warriors springs up, and thus is built the city of Cadmeia the capital of Thebes.

The last story is one of the most famous in Greek mythology: Jason and The Golden Fleece.

Dubbed the “most popular Western of all times” Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage was the benchmark by which every other novel in the “Western” genre came to be judged. It portrays the archetypal lone gun slinger, out to wreak revenge for past wrongs who falls foul of the rich and powerful and finally rides away into the sunset, having rid the town of poisonous villains!

Riders of the Purple Sage is set in 1871, in a remote part of Utah. It opens with the young and lovely Jane Withersteen being victimized and harassed by her Mormon Church elders for associating with Gentiles or Non-Mormons. They are compelling her to marry one of their own sect, though Jane thinks otherwise. She has many good friends among non-Mormons and one of them, Bern Venters, is captured by a group of Mormons who set up a kangaroo court and condemn him to death. At this moment, a mysterious stranger, known only as Lassiter, appears and rescues Bern. He strikes fear into the hearts of the Mormons who are strangely subdued in his presence. His own hatred of their group is also slowly revealed. Jane herself is a wealthy rancher, whose herd is being surreptitiously rustled by unknown cattle thieves. Venters volunteers to help her and encounters a mysterious Masked Rider whose identity comes as a shock to everyone.

Most cowboy stories tend to follow a simple revenge plot with a little romance thrown in. However, Riders of the Purple Sage bucks this trend. It has memorable and well fleshed out characters, a many layered plot and interesting bits of social commentary. He wrote his first novel when he was just fifteen. It was an adventure story which enraged his father, a dentist, who felt that he was wasting his time with frivolous nonsense. While studying to become a dentist himself, Zane did odd jobs to supplement the family income after his father suffered financial losses. After marriage and a successful career, Zane wrote his first novel Betty Zane in 1903 and another in 1909. Both were unsuccessful till he published Riders of the Purple Sage in 1912.

After this there was no looking back. He began churning out a phenomenal three books a year and on his death in 1939 notched up an impressive body of work and led an extremely colorful personal life which could itself be the subject of a great novel!

As a classic Western, Riders of the Purple Sage is indeed the book that laid down the rules for this genre.

Summa Theologica or simply the Summa as it is known, was written some time between 1265-74. It is a work that has had a profound and enduring influence on Western thought and literature. Designed to provide answers to Catholic theologians about the teachings of the Church, Thomas Aquinas' book instead goes far beyond its stated purpose.

The most famous tenet that the book contains is the Five Ways or Five Arguments for the Existence of God. This in spite of the fact that this tenet is contained in a mere five pages out of the total three thousand five hundred plus pages of the Summa! Such is the power of some of the ideas contained herein.

Thomas Aquinas was a deeply learned Dominican monk, philosopher, teacher and scholar. His path-breaking ideas encompassed sources as diverse as those contained in Aristotle, Plato, Cicero, Augustine of Hippo, Apostle Paul and many others, along with Christian, Muslim, Eastern and Oriental texts. For those of us who haven't read some of the classics, a teaser in the form of a single chapter would probably be intriguing enough to want us to take up the book and start reading.

Favorite Chapters Collection 001 is one such delicious tasting table! Ten chapters from some of the best known classics in English are available here and they're sure to delight not only those who have read the entire book but also those who are yet to do so.

Kicking off with Part I Chapter I from Vol I of David Hume's The History of England, published in 1688, the collection gets off to a great start. Chapter I deals with the Britons, Romans, Saxons and the ancient kingdoms of Kent, Northumberland and East Anglia. Interesting tidbits of information about the Druids and their dominance through the power of fear and superstition are included.

In complete contrast, you will smile a while with  Chapter 28 from Dickens' The Pickwick Papers. This is the charming “Christmas Chapter” in which the Pickwickians travel to Dingley Dell.

Other selections include an exciting chapter from The Scarlet Pimpernel, a tender scene from Dumas' La Dame Aux Camelias and a charming episode from Little Women entitled “Domestic Experiences” in which the newly-married Meg discovers the bitter-sweet pleasures of managing a house.

Most parents know and understand the value of children's stories. Reading aloud to your children becomes an occasion for family warmth and bonding. But quite apart from this, the true importance of introducing children to fiction helps them to make sense of the real world they will have to encounter at some later stage. Stories also give them hope, teach moral values and help them to understand the complex nature of the society that they will ultimately have to live in.

Children's Short Works Vol 001 contains ten delightful traditional tales. Some of them are familiar while a few of them are less known.

The first story, The Beauty and The Beast is famous in children's literature. Originally written in French by the French novelist, Jeanne-Marie Beaumont, the story is a classic fairy story, with elements of suspense, romance, a magical transformation and the final happy ending. First published in the eighteenth century, this is a story that has captured the imagination for generations. It has been widely adapted for stage, screen, television, opera and animation. It has also inspired thousands of adaptations in literature across the world.

Other stories in this charming collection include old favorites like Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood and Rumpelstiltskin, which were first published in 1812 as part of Grimm's Fairy Tales. Another well-loved tale is Aesop's Fox and the Grapes, retold by La Fontaine. The collection also includes some cute rhymes and verses.

Other  stories include The Feast of the Lantern by Victorian writer WT Stead and a couple of stories penned by unknown authors. An interesting “cumulative story” The Little Gingerbread Man teaches kids to memorize events.  

These stories promote an understanding of different cultures and help to create awareness, empathy and understanding of the problems that people encounter in their lives.

Children's Short Works by Unknown

Considered to mark the emergence of a new literary form, the unvarnished autobiography, Confessions by Jean-Jacques Rousseau was first published in 1782, four years after his death. The philosopher and educationist whose political philosophy is credited with having inspired the French Revolution, Rousseau was a man of immense wit, talent and depth of thinking. His skill in art,  music, literature and cooking along with his magnificent body of work in philosophy, politics, education and sociology have made him a legendary figure.

However, through Confessions, he aimed to present a complete picture of himself, exposing all the unsavory and shameful incidents in his private life as well as the public persona. Confessions deals with the first fifty-three years of his life and he completed it in 1769 and conducted many public readings of extracts before his death in 1778.

This is an extremely thought-provoking book and its ideas remain as fresh and stimulating as they did more than two centuries ago. The entire book consists of two volumes of six books each and Rousseau apparently planned a third which he could not undertake. Though two previous autobiographies, by Saint Augustine and Saint Theresa, had been written earlier, both of them had focused more on their religious experiences. Rousseau writes in the opening lines, “.... the man I shall portray will be myself,” thus vowing to be honest and sincere.

And truthful he proved to be. The dark side of his personal life, his affair with a house-maid and the children that were born and given away to protect his honor are faithfully chronicled alongside his brilliant thoughts on education, freedom, social inequality, the general will and common interest of society, collective sovereignty and the supreme importance of individual freedom.

For those interested in the foundations of modern European thought, Confessions is indeed an interesting read.

The story tells of a young boy named Diamond, the son of a coachman in an English country mansion. Diamond sleeps in the hayloft above the stables and at night he finds he's disturbed by the wind blowing through the holes in the wall. He tries to plug them but one night, he hears an imperious voice scolding him for doing this! It is the magnificent North Wind that speaks to him and tells him that he's closed up her windows. Puzzled and intrigued, Diamond begins a conversation with this haughty lady who then invites him to travel with her and see the wide world. What follows is a series of wonderful adventures and experiences in which the great North Wind teaches Diamond the most valuable lessons that a human being can learn – about truth, goodness, beauty and love.

The book is said to have inspired writers like CS Lewis. The author, George Macdonald was a literary luminary of his day. Friend of the great artists, writers and philosophers of the day like John Ruskin, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Antony Trollope, Walt Whitman, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and a host of others, he was an ordained minister of the Church besides being a gifted poet and writer. His body of work includes novels, fantasy stories, children's stories, poetry, non-fiction and religious treatises. He was also a staunch advocate of criminal reform and opposed punishment in any form, believing that love could conquer everything.

He is determined to stay honorable, though he is tempted many times to easy pickings and a life of crime. When a regular customer is impressed by Dick's integrity and invites him to his mansion, this marks a turning point in the life of the young street-smart teenager.

Ragged Dick by Horatio Alger Jr was first published in 1868. It represents a typical coming of age story in which a child attains the maturity of adulthood through circumstances in which important choices are made. It was the first in a six-series set written by the prolific American writer, best known for his stories of young boys who overcome poverty and social disadvantages to become assimilated in the great American middle class. Many of Alger's stories follow a well-known theme and formula but were extremely well-received and popular among readers of a previous generation. Ragged Dick was an instant best-seller and achieved huge attention from old and young readers and critics alike. Alger went on to write more than a hundred novels, though his later works were more sensational and characterized by violence and murder, and not found very suitable for young readers.

Horatio Alger was dismissed from service as a Unitarian minister under suspicious circumstances, though nothing was proven against him. He began working as a volunteer in New York's slum areas, helping to provide assistance to young homeless people. Around this time, he started writing articles in journals and finally moved into novel writing. Ragged Dick first appeared in the journal Student and Schoolmate, a magazine for young boys and girls,  as a 12-part serial and copies of the magazine sold out almost instantly. It caught the American imagination and skilfully portrayed the hard, coarse, brutal and unforgiving life of the New York slum as no other book had before. Genteel, educated readers had perhaps never encountered the situations depicted in Ragged Dick. This novelty was probably what accounted for the book's success. It was later adapted to stage and as a musical opera called Shine!

Besides novels, Alger wrote poetry, essays and articles for various magazines. His work in rehabilitation and assistance to the underprivileged kids of New York is well-known. He left several unfinished books which were completed according to his last will and testament by Edward Stratemeyer, the creator of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew series.
