In this episode, we took a deep dive into disaster planning, how to shop for insurance, how to stand up to the insurance company, and what to do when that major storm strikes and damages your property.

Galen Hair is a property-casualty insurance attorney operating and owner of Insurance Claim HQ. He is licensed in a number of states that Mother Nature haunts with hurricanes, blizzards, tornadoes, and other natural disasters, including Louisiana, Massachusetts, Florida, and New York.

Climate change and the recurrence of "hundred year storms" (that are happening much more frequently than every hundred years) are keeping Galen busy with his seemingly recession-proof law practice.

Galen and Rory both graduated from Boston University the same year (but didn't know until we recorded since BU is so large!) Late in the episode, we heard how, at age 15, Galen learned how to engage people by giving away free samples of Texas BBQ dry-rubbed chicken, both skills he uses to this day (engaging people and cooking chicken)!

Meet Kekoa Lwin! Kekoa is full of energy and knowledge, and we loved hearing his take on leadership, mentorship, growing a network, and teamwork.

He's the leader of Team Kekoa and proud Co-Founder of KECO Capital, Integris Real Estate, Pacific Rim Property Management, and Elevation Construction.

Kekoa started in college when he "majored in girls and minored in real estate" and started house hacking before he even knew what that was! Since then, Kekoa and his team have completed over 250 house flips (many "before HGTV made it cool") in Hawaii, Seattle, Las Vegas, and Dallas.

And to me the mindset is like the flower lei.

It's like when you go into the day with a mindset that says, hey, I can do this, today's going to be better than yesterday. And the high of today is going to be the low of tomorrow. So you know, I'm just going to keep on pressing into the day.

And you have a mindset like that, then man, you can do anything, no matter how hard life gets, because you've got that lei of a mindset of positivity that really changes things."

Meet Paul Wells, an experience semi-retired real estate developer and leader in the ADU movement.

What's an ADU, you ask? It's an Accessory Dwelling Unit.

Granny Flats, Casitas, Mother-in-Law Units, Backyard Houses, Guest Houses - whatever you'd like to call them, Paul has seen and done it all in the ADU space, and we're extremely fortunate to have had Paul on the podcast for an informative chat about ADUs.

The laws and the policies that bring ADU to life are still developing every day. Some municipalities actively encourage ADUs, while others are still working out their opinions.

Paul and Rory have an excellent conversation about where ADUs are working quite well (California and Colorado, for example), helping solve housing shortages, barriers of entry, retaining generational wealth, and supplying ways for generations to remain together on the same plots of land. They discuss the benefits of having professionals that understand the process of working with a city and a county, not just to get building permits, but to create effective and efficient designs that makes sense to that municipalities involved.
