  • Sharing, and Getting Others to Share
Talking to some people is like pulling teeth with how little they give you. This is where the practice of elicitation comes in. Elicitation is the art of soliciting information through indirect means, statements, and questions that are irresistible for people to reply to. There are six specific elicitation techniques we cover that align closely with tendencies of the human psyche, most notably the ego: recognition, complaining, correction, naiveté, shifting the window, and plain silence.

  • Turning the Obstacle Upside Down
This means our happiness depends on our perception and judgment of external events. In fact, all events are neutral, and we only assign them value due to our perceptions. We actively prevent ourselves from turning the obstacle upside down and viewing hardships through a more positive lens. If tragedy happens, life must move on. This is entirely up to you.
Turning the obstacle upside down is not easy. Controlling your emotions and responding rather than reacting is the focus of many philosophies. Stoicism takes a different view on how to train this type of non-reactiveness. We must induce voluntary discomfort and also practice negative visualization. This dramatically changes our expectations and sense of gratitude and allows us to become more resilient in our thoughts.
Finally, Stoicism encourages you to focus only on what is within your control and accept that which is not. You can control your efforts and actions but almost never the outcomes. This is life. One path leads you to happiness, while the other leads you to perpetual dissatisfaction. Again, this choice is entirely upon your shoulders.

  • Salvaging a Social Situation
A tangent to being likable is not being stereotyped or judged in a negative way. Sometimes, avoiding a bad impression is the best that we can do in certain situations or with certain people. That’s okay, and it just requires us to switch gears and focus on that different goal.
Research has found that judgment (which is mostly negative) comes as a result of incomplete information, which causes people to complete their judgment via stereotypes. If you provide more information about yourself and share, share, share, you will be able to avoid judgment. Therefore, the more information you have present about yourself, no matter how irrelevant it seems, makes you a three-dimensional human. What’s more, if you share and divulge personal and emotional information and the other person reciprocates, you can create a sense of mutual closeness and intimacy.

  • Active Listening
The five stages of listening are ignoring, pretend listening, selective listening, attentive listening, and empathetic listening. Most of us are stuck in the first three levels. Some of us might reach level 4 from time to time. Active listening is another aspect that gives people the distinct sense that they are being heard and seen. It ideally consists of comprehending, retaining, responding, and restating. The goal is to go deeper and have people talk as much as possible. Silence is also a useful tool for this goal.
Validation, on the other hand, is the act of showing respect and acknowledgment to people’s intentions and emotions. It can be as easy as nodding your head, but it accomplishes the greater purpose of making people feel emotionally heard and fulfilled. At the most basic level, it consists of identifying people’s emotions and then justifying them. You first act as a detective to understand what you are dealing with and then make people feel that they are completely rational in feeling their emotions. Emotions are never quite rational, but they are always real.

  • Frenemies - Convert Enemies into Friends
The Benjamin Franklin effect is where you ask someone else to perform a favor for you, and surprisingly, this makes them like you more. This goes against the conventional view that doing things for others is what creates goodwill and affection. The psychological component behind this is known as cognitive dissonance, which is when the brain is trying to make two conflicting thoughts exist with each other. Thus, “I don’t like him” plus “I did this for him” equals “I suppose I like him enough.” Asking for favors also closes the psychological distance and shows vulnerability.
Of course, we can always perform favors for people; this is a more tried and true and direct method of being likable. If you demonstrate yourself to be of value to someone, they will like you more. Or at least they won’t consider you completely useless, and that’s the best we can do with some people. Occasionally they will feel compelled by the principle of reciprocity to return the favor to you, which is the start of something great.

  • One Ratio to Rule Them All
Despite our best efforts, we are usually unable to separate a statement’s impact from the source. This is known as shooting the messenger, and we are usually guilty of it, both anecdotally and as found in 2019 by Blunden and Liu in a paper called “Shooting the Messenger.” You’re stuck between a rock and a hard place unless you can harness what is known as the Losada ratio.
