We are learning to feel our feelings so that our emotions do not prevent us from living the life we want to live. This is truly the secret to life. Being willing to feel difficult emotions instead of resisting them, is what will set you free. Often time we delegate our emotional health to those around us, giving all of our power away.

As genxers, we have been through a lot. We have see a lot. We have experienced a lot. Now it is time to not let our emotions get in the way of our lives anymore. Let's feel, continue to process, and move on and start living.

In 2012, I started a Youtube Channel called Soul Searching Girl. At the time, I was stumbling through the aftermath of Mormonism, hurt, feeling betrayed, terrified and yet searching. I wanted other like me to know they weren’t alone, that there was life on the other side of faith crisis and that healing was possible. It became a space of honesty, curiosity and connection. 

Years later, I shifted my focus, but the soul searching never stopped. It created new spaces, explored new ideas and walk with countless men and women through their own messy middles. But now, I am coming back to my roots, back to where this began.

Today, Soul Searching Girl has grown with me. While my work isn’t solely about mormonism anymore, religious trauma, patriarchy, and the weight of conditioning will always be threads in my story and in the stories of many who find me here. This podcast is for every woman standing in her own In Between: after the unraveling, before the rebuilding, wondering who she really is without the rules, the roles and the noise.

Here, we talk about healing old wounds, trusting yourself again and embracing who you have truly always been before patriarchy, before the silencing, before the doubt. We explore boundaries, self trust, feminism, joy and the courage to feel your feelings instead of running from them.

Soul Searching Girl is not about age. It is about spirit. It is the part of you that is curious, rebellious and free, the part of you that refuses to stop searching for truth.

Let's dive into religious scrupulosity and the Doug Fabrizio's Radio West Episode last week. Radio West is a Salt Lake City radio/podcast show. I was a bit triggered by a few things said by a guest on last weeks show and I want to talk about it, what it means and what it may mean to you. Working your way out of religious scrupulosity is possible. For many it stops the minute your religious beliefs dissipate, for others it may take years to unravel. Either way, I want to talk about what is happening for those of us who tend towards the scrupulous ways of religiously believing, even when we did not know it was a thing that was happening to and within us.

While I know that the title of this episode may sound like I want to take on the whole affirmation community (if that is a thing), that is not the case. I do believe there is a missing step in the process of how we have been taught to do affirmations. So, this week, I want to teach you the missing piece and speed up the process of getting you to what you want to believe about yourself. This way you get to where you want to go with your life a whole lot quicker! If nothing else, you get to the beliefs you want to believe in a more holistic, moving way, sustainable way. 

You may be developing an obsession, or at minimum a fascination, with things like televangelists or Shiny Happy People. Me too! This week I dive into why that happens, what is happening in your brain when you watch and how this is an important part of your healing. I also address the "script" used by most of the religious people in your life when you share the news that you are leaving your religion. It was the summer of 1990, shortly after I was married, when my husband and I embarked on a journey to Flaming Gorge Lodge (in Utah) where we would work for the summer saving for college tuition. I worked as a waitress at the diner. In this week's episode of The Unorthodox Woman, I recount a remarkable encounter with a charming lady who happened to be working alongside me. While I can't recall her exact age or even remember her name, she appeared to be in her late 60s or maybe even 70s. (as a 20-year-old, she seemed "old" to me at the time.) Little did I know that she would impart a lesson that has stayed with me for over 30 years. It involves coffee, a beverage I was not allowed to drink as an active believing member of my church. I have a feeling this story will help you with whatever you are struggling with, as it has helped me with my own struggles throughout my life.
