Guest: Michael Serazio, Associate Professor of Communication, Boston College, Author of “The Power of Sports: Media and Spectacle in American Culture”
NBA teams, inside their pandemic bubble in Orlando, are heading into the second round of playoff games. For two days last week, the whole thing ground to a sudden halt. First the Milwaukee Bucks decided not to take the court in protest of the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin. Within hours, hundreds of athletes in professional men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and soccer had joined the walkout.
Pandemic Recession is Worse for Women in the Workforce (18:11)
Guest: Titan Alon, Professor of Economics, University of California San Diego
The last couple of economic recessions in America have been harder on men in the workforce than women–mainly because of the kinds of jobs men and women tend to do. But this pandemic recession is the opposite–women are hurting far more and, as a result, are likely to see their wages slip further behind men in America.
LEGO Bricks in Braille (34:44)
Guests: Kate Herndon, Senior Director of Product Operations and Analytics, LEGO Braille Bricks Project Leader, American Printing House for the Blind; Greg Stilson, Senior Director of Global Innovation, American Printing House for the Blind
Think of your standard LEGO brick: A little rectangle with eight raised bumps on it, right? Well it turns out that braille is based on a set of raised dots arranged just like LEGOs, except with six dots instead of eight. So, LEGO has made some custom bricks specifically to help blind children learn braille through play. The LEGO Braille Bricks are just launching in the US in partnership with the American Printing House for the Blind. They’re sending send hundreds of free sets out to schools and students around the country.

Guest: Yazmín García Trejo, Social Science Researcher, U.S. Census Bureau
Americans have just one month left to fill out the 2020 Census. Eight-three percent of all households have been counted, according to the US Census Bureau’s latest tally. But that still leaves more than 20 million households that have yet to fill out the short survey. Heading into the massive undertaking, Census Bureau research suggested women, in particular, were less intent on completing the 2020 Census.
Ever Wonder How Many Hot Dogs a Human Could Eat? Science Has the Answer (1:13:15)
Guest: James Smoliga, Professor of Exercise Science, High Point University
Competitive hot dog eaters swallow a huge number of hot dogs in a very short amount of time. The current record is 75 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Is there a limit at which a human just can’t down any more dogs?
Mindfulness Might Help You and Your Family Regain Your Footing in These Turbulent Times (1:18:18)
