Rick Rosenfield is the co-founder of California Pizza Kitchen, the $1 billion restaurant brand he built with his law partner, Larry Flax, after the two left careers as federal prosecutors to open a single pizza restaurant in Beverly Hills in 1985. Funded with second mortgages and $300,000 from friends, that one location grew into a public company with more than 265 restaurants and roughly $1 billion in annual revenue. In 2011, they sold CPK to Golden Gate Capital for approximately $470 million. Credited with pioneering California-style pizza, Rosenfield chronicled the journey in The California Pizza Kitchen Story and continues to invest in and advise new restaurant concepts through his venture firm.

In this "Lessons" episode, Brian L. Strom, former Rutgers Chancellor and public health researcher, examines why trust in healthcare has declined as medicine has become increasingly corporate and transactional. Drawing on his experience as a physician and healthcare leader, he explains how financial incentives can prioritize treatment over prevention, why doctors have less time to build meaningful relationships with patients, and how better use of nurses, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals could improve care. Brian also explores the shift from fee-for-service medicine toward population-based healthcare and why aligning incentives around keeping people healthy could transform the way healthcare is delivered.

In this "Lessons" episode, Gretchen Rubin, New York Times bestselling author of The Four Tendencies and The Happiness Project, explains how understanding personality tendencies can reveal why people approach expectations, habits, and motivation so differently. She breaks down the four tendencies—Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, and Rebel—and explores how each comes with its own strengths and challenges. Gretchen also explains why self-awareness is more useful than trying to change your natural tendencies, how to build systems that work with the way you are wired, and why external accountability can be especially powerful for some people. This episode offers practical insights for creating better habits, improving relationships, and finding approaches to personal growth that actually work for you.
