This is a small book in size a mere sixty-six pages, but as to the story within, well that is an entirely different sequence of events, for this is the story of part of Rosa the author’s life, carefully and creatively told over sixteen revealing and impassioned chapters. The book touches on suicide, neglect, abuse, faith and incredible pertinacity to forge a new life for herself. It’s a powerful narrative sensitively told.

Helmut Portmann is an American author born in Switzerland but now residing in Covington a small community town in the state of Louisiana, USA where he lives with his wife Julie, son Alex, rescued husky Gabriel and adopted cat sisters Pearl and Amethyst. Helmut has done a variety of jobs over the years since graduating from college, his first job saw him logging oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico, but that was soon followed by working on the US Army’s Pershing Tactical Nuclear Missile System in Europe during the Cold War. Returning to the US he became an analyst hunting Soviet submarines, which led to him being put in charge of a program that protected US submarines being detected. Helmut has also worked in the US navy’s mine warfare laboratory to help lead their unmanned systems programs. He ultimately ended up as a director of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Data Buoy Centre, deploying buoys across the world’s great oceans to measure weather and climate changes, plus tsunami occurrences. A varied career you might say, but we mustn’t forget his drumming experiences. Now a days a more sedate lifestyle is pursued and at the heart of that changed manner of living is writing, so let’s turn our attention to this second book of his.

Comfort Khumalo Keil is no shrinking violet, she was born in a small town called Hlatikulu in Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland). Her mother was a schoolteacher and her father a government employee. At a very young age she found herself divorced and in a dark place and with nowhere to go and with a UK visa in her hand she flew to the UK for what she believed was going to be the start of a new beginning. But that new life never really transpired, in fact quite the contrary, nearly destitute and with more failed relationships to her name she left for the USA, but again her life there followed a similar disappointing path. Canada called, life there was on the up, but not without setbacks, nevertheless now in a sustainable relationship Comfort returned to the USA and now lives in Tucson Arizona.  She’s a wife, and a mother of three enjoying life’s activities such as, reading, writing, travelling, cooking and doing all the normal things a contented person does in life. Throughout her somewhat tumultuous life the two things that have remained constant and are still important to her today, are her steadfast faith in God and the firm belief in second chances coupled with an ethos of never give up, a message that comes across strongly in her book. A book all about her.

A life so far, wrapped up in thirty-one exhilarating chapters; you might well ask yourself how one person in such a short time can experience so much. Well! Comfort Khumalo Keil has, for this book is her story laid bare, the adventures, the pitfalls, the relationships, the homeless days on the streets, the men, the abuse, the money and the lack of it, the journey’s travelled in search for a better life, plus lots more. However, the two things that sustained her throughout her turbulent years are her faith and the belief in second chances, to which believe you me this author has had many. Her journey starts in Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, then to the Uk, followed by the USA, Canada and back to the USA. When you read this reservoir of anecdotes that portray her early years, you’ll be left aghast, but the overriding message to the narrative foretold here is quite simply “Never give up, and firmly believe in God’s overall sovereignty, for there is always light at the end of the dark tunnel.”

What a read this book is, if Comfort Khumalo Keil was a famous Hollywood star around the time when Jackie Collins was writing her books about Hollywood wives and had chosen to write Comfort’s story, she would easily have had another best seller on her hands. So, embrace this book especially the poignant conclusions right at the very end of this dynamic book on page 603. Yes 603! It’s a big book, for Comfort has a lot to say in her debut novel.

A K Cooper-Elliot was born in Germany but now resides in Yorkshire a beautiful and breath-taking county in the UK. Those that live there would arguably say that it’s the best county in the UK, but those that are not domiciled there may possibly disagree, but without a doubt the Yorkshire Dales are renowned for their natural surroundings.

A K is married with two grown-up children that have fled the nest. Due to the early onset of Multiple Sclerosis, A K had to retire at a relatively early age from her high-flying executive career in procurement and accountancy due to the demands of the job and her functionality issues that were becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. With the decision reluctantly taken to step away from the world of high finance, A K turned to writing, giving her a new focus in life, a focus that can be fitted around her physical abilities. For a person living with M.S. some days can be more challenging than others, on a bad day not much gets done.

As far as A K can remember she has always loved books, reading a variety of genres. Roselyn Teukolsky was born in Johannesburg in South Africa, where she graduated from the University of the Witwatersand with a B.Sc. in Maths and Chemistry. She emigrated at the age of twenty-three to the United States and soon found herself graduating from Cornell University with an M.S. in Mathematics Education. Roselyn is married with children and grandchildren. For Most of her life she taught Maths and Computer Science mainly at Ithaca High School in Upstate New York. Since retiring in 2009 She and her husband Saul split their time between Ithaca, New York State and Pasadena, California, where Saul is a physics professor at two universities, Cornell and Caltech. Let’s just say both herself and her husband are smart, so guess where they spend the winter months! 

Roselyn is also the author of ‘The Barron’s Review’ book for AP Computer Science, which is presently in its twelfth edition. 

And of course, I cannot but mention her passion for playing Bridge, especially with her husband Saul. In fact, we had to schedule all our zoom meetings to put this podcast interview together around her Bridge schedule. Not to mention Roselyn’s Zoom eyebrows, we won’t talk about them for they had a mind of their own and have now been banished to the computer bin.

Linda Dooks was born and raised in a farming community in North Yorkshire a proud county of the UK. As child she would often doodle stories in a notebook, a notebook she hid from her parents who thought writing when other chores needed to be attended to, a waste of time, they often wondered why Linda dilly-dallied when taking the dog for a walk, the walk was brief but a necessary activity to get some doodling done. A trip to the local library on a Saturday was very often the hi-light of Linda’s week. The librarian there would keep all of Linda’s short stories she had written in a box under the counter, so that she could revisit them, plus allow her to read some of her favourite authors, Agatha Christie and Arthur Conon Doyle. 

Having left school to earn a living and learning that her librarian had died, Linda forgot about the box under the counter and often thinks what happened to it, but she didn’t forget about her desire to write, and picked that up again after the birth of her children. Linda joined a writing class in Hemsley, North Yorkshire, and with renewed encouragement wrote her children’s stories based on the North York Moors Railway adventures, maybe one day she will publish them. Let’s hope so.

Now retired from the local council and having more time to focus on the one thing she has loved throughout her life, Linda has written this debut novel, with the full support of her husband Peter and children Emma and Richard, plus a few other friends from nearby writing fraternities. So, let’s turn our attention to the book.

Book Two

Land of Opportunity Book Two

This is Linda’s latest book in the series

This is a smaller book than her first novel in the series but that’s not to say it’s any less lacking in substance, quite the contrary in fact. The story is a continuation from where the first book left off, so to get the bigger picture as to the characters and the narrative you need to read the books in sequence otherwise this new book of Linda’s isn’t going to be so meaningful to you. Like her first book it’s an easy read and again the scenes are very much reminiscent to the period leading up to WW1. 

It has been ten years since Rose Watson the main character left England, searching for a new life on the streets of New York with Agnes a companion she met on board the ship that took her away from a harrowing life back home. Her life has changed considerably, and adapting to a new set of circumstances proved to be more challenging than she anticipated. You need to be tough to survive the everyday occurrences of New York, street gangs and gang warfare are prominent round every corner.

Rose’s work at the Charity Board Society continues to shock and astound her as more and more immigrants arrive in New York via Ellis Island in search of a new life, a life free of penury and degradation. What shocks her the most is children arriving on their own abandoned by their families for all sorts of unfathomable reasons especially girls. Now married to Thomas Blackwood a wealthy successful businessman Rose has her own family and what she has learnt over the years she puts to good use to support and guide the upcoming next generation of young hopefuls that she sees around her trying to make a more prosperous life for themselves. But these are uncertain times as WW1 looms. So, what does lie ahead for Rose and all the characters that are in this second book. Well! You’ll have to read the books starting with the first book. 

Again, you’ll find the research Linda has undertaken to ensure the storyline is authentic and true to the period of that time is exemplary. The book like the first has many twists and turns, romance, murder, high society and gang warfare it’s all there wrapped up in forty- four exhilarating chapters. 

Book One

Land of Opportunity

Sixty-five stunning but brief chapters are wrapped up in this book to bring you a scintillating story about the character Rose Watson a sixteen-year-old girl born in North Yorkshire in the UK in 1897. Her early years were profoundly impacted upon by the death of her mother, which left her in an uncompromising family situation with an uncaring father and a precarious unwanted situation with regards to her brother whose advances towards her probably bordered on incestuous had she allowed matters to unfold. Growing up in a male dominated farming community with little sympathy Rose needed to escape her world of drudgery and unpalatable attention, a new world called with new prospects but equally a world adorned with new dangers.

Rose emigrates to America, New York to be precise, the boat journey across the Atlantic from Liverpool to Ellis Island New York was long and arduous. Agnes a budding singer who she meets lures her into New York’s dubious and dangerous underworld. Rose quickly learns that the tough streets of New York are not paved in gold. Rose’s one saving grace is that of Thomas Blackwood an American who she met while travelling to America. Does romance come her way or does another cruel lesson of life lurk around the corner. Hmm…I know what happens, but if you want to find out, then this historical fiction book which has been carefully researched to bring a sense of authenticity to it, is waiting for you to flick through its pages. So, flick through them.

The narrative is very well written, it’s an easy read, but a read packed with the reality of those times and what life was like then for a young girl braving a new adventure.

John Minkler is an American author form Fresno in California, family and supporting young adults is at the fundamental heart of what he does each day. John’s three children and seven grandchildren feature heavily in his life and the one thing they enjoy doing together is making ‘magic’ movies. 

John has had an illustrious career in education, he was a history come civics teacher and administrator since 1971, to those credentials we must add Coordinator at the Fresno County Office of Education, Director of the Centre for Multicultural Cooperation, Consultant for the Education Commission of the States, but more importantly Cofounder of the Academy for Civic and Entrepreneurial Leadership.  An impressive Curriculum Vitae you might say. Well to that fine list we now must incorporate, author.

What’s the book about? Well, let’s turn our attention to that.

The Book

John’s not written this book for self-glorification or pecuniary rewards; he’s written it to highlight the work the Civic Education Center to which he is one of the directors does for young adults of all backgrounds, creeds, genders, and abilities in and around the Fresno area of California. While the book is predominately focused on empowering young American high school students, the general ethos can be adopted by any one across the globe who work in close conjunction with middle grade students.  When you look at the website the first thing that hits you is the message “Youth Voice Matters,” and under those very apt words is the following statement, “They have the power to make positive change in your school…the power to create their own future and improve their community. We are here to help them along the way.”  The Book is to give the wider audience an insight as to what empowering young minds can do and achieve.

A life so far, wrapped up in thirty-one exhilarating chapters; you might well ask yourself how can one person in such a short time experience so much. Well! Comfort Khumalo keil has, for this book is her story laid bare, the adventures, the pitfalls, the relationships, the homeless days on the streets, the men, the abuse, the money and the lack of it, the journey’s travelled in search for a better life, plus lots more. However, the two things that sustained her throughout her turbulent years are her faith and the belief in second chances, to which believe you me this author has had many. Her journey starts in Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, then to the Uk, followed by the USA, Canada and back to the USA. When you read this reservoir of anecdotes that portray her early years, you’ll be left aghast, but the overriding message to the narrative foretold here is quite simply “Never give up, and firmly believe in God’s overall sovereignty, for there is always light at the end of the dark tunnel.”

What a read this book is, if Comfort Khumalo Keil was a famous Hollywood star around the time when Jackie Collins was writing her books about Hollywood wives and had chosen to write Comfort’s story, she would easily have had another best seller on her hands. So, embrace this book especially the poignant conclusions right at the very end of this dynamic book on page 603. Yes, 603! It’s a big book, for Comfort has a lot to say in her debut novel.

Christine Burton is an American author who was born in the U.S. state of Wisconsin to Polish-German descent parents, she presently resides in Harvest, a small community town close to the Alabama-Tennessee state line. Christine has had an illustrious career, she holds a degree in Business Management, Paralegal and to that a doctorate in Naturopathy. Her working experiences took her into the fields of medicine, law, teaching and food services; quite a broad avenue of choices one could say. However, to create this book she has drawn on her experiences of the food industry and education. While working with K12 students, Christine quickly realised that young minds of all sexes, abilities and cultures easily engaged with creative and practical ideas. When involving students to create and make something for themselves and their friends and family they found it to be fun and alluring. Thus, the concept of showing teens of all ages making delectable food and sharing that food with their friends and family was a great way to show important nutritional lessons in life. Making and creating foods based around age and lifestyles of teens was the foundation for this book.  Now retired so to speak, Christine has put all those wonderful recipes in this book so that more people, especially teens, can discover the joy of creating awesome food not only for themselves but their friends as well. Ultimately to appreciate the delights of what cooking good food can do for them. So, let’s turn to the book.

The Book

This book is a perfect blend of cooking and baking base recipes; while all can enjoy the simple step by step recipes, it’s mainly for young teens of all backgrounds and abilities to start to explore and enjoy the art of cooking/baking. The author is implying that at times you may want to cook and bake having both sections convenient for you. When you open the book, you’ll quickly realize there is a baking section with useful hints and tips followed by the main cooking section, where a vast array of delightful culinary dishes awaits your attention. The baking section focuses on breads and yummy desserts, but the cooking section with close on two hundred mouth-watering ideas and healthy meals is accompanied by some wonderful untouched photography showing you what your creations will look like. Does it matter if they don’t turn out as you expect them to, no! Each recipe includes suggestions and tips to guide you through making your expectations a positive reaction. It’s the participation and for young adults to socialise and interact with their friends and understand making healthy enjoyable meals can be fun as well as educational. Sitting down with family and friends to share a meal is one of the most gratifying parts of life in general.
