Some things are just a little too perfect to be random – and this is coined by Nora and guest Caroline Moss as “the portal opening.” In today’s episode of IGTBO, Nora and Caroline talk about the small moments of magic and stars aligning: Nora’s daughter’s new boyfriend’s invisible string through their lives, signs from Caroline’s grandmother, and a puppy finally learning how to ask to go outside after weeks of failed training.
Not everything is going to be OK all the time. We know that. You know that. But this episode is a celebration of the moments where it feels like the universe is giving you a little nudge to remind you that something will be OK.

Ayane Lage is the author of Missing Me: A memoir of post-partum psychosis and the long road back, her own first-hand account of an often-misunderstood and currently very hot topic, as we sat down to record this on the same week as the internet and major news outlets are tirelessly reporting and speculating on the case of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother who strangled her three young children in what prosecutors call a pre-meditated act and what her lawyer and many women across the world are calling an act of post-partum psychosis.
Ayana’s story had a very different ending – she was lucky enough to be here to share her story with us, and we’re lucky to have her here to share it.

If we’re lucky, we’ll all be old someday. America is gradually getting older. According to the US government, since 2001, the national median age has risen from 35.6 to 39.4. And yes, while we complain about boomers, it has to be said that attempting to retire in an economy where gas is close to $5 a gallon and a 12-pack of Diet Coke is $12 (highway robbery). According to a study by Allianz, baby boomers are the wealthiest generation to have ever lived, and account for 51.8% of the country’s total wealth.
As these boomers age and – let’s say it – die – the wealth they pass down to their children and grandchildren is going to be anywhere from 68-84 trillion dollars…and unprecedented amount of money that many are calling The Great Wealth Transfer. And if that happens for some people, cool! But obviously not every boomer is rich, and many of them are passing down more generational trauma than generational wealth.
In this episode of Thanks for Asking, Nora is talking to Beth Pinsker, a Certified Financial Planner and author of My Mother’s Money: A Guide to Financial Caregiving. They’re talking about finances, debt, and managing money for aging parents – something that is never easy but many of us deal with in silence. So today, we’re talking about it.
Beth’s book is available on Bookshop, Amazon or wherever you buy books.

If you’re on the brink right now, you aren’t alone. As the Summer of Surrender comes to an end, Nora wanted to bring you an episode that was made to distract you from the weight of the world. Today, she’s joined by friend of the pod and Be There in Five host Kate Kennedy to reconnect with the small things that bring them joy: in parenting, in their homes, in trinkets, and, of course, in amazing TV that takes you away from your own life, just for a little while.

Most friendships start because you have something in common: work, hobbies, fashion, books, sense of humor. But not all friendships are formed because of something wholesome in common. Sometimes, you share an experience so life-changing that you are drawn to each other. That is how, nine years ago, Nora and Steph Wittels Wachs became friends. Steph lost her brother, Harris, to an opioid overdose. Grievers can always find common ground: losing someone changes you.
If you have lived this before, you’ll find it feeling familiar. If you haven’t, consider yourself lucky. Watching a family member suffer from opioid addiction is crushing. Losing them is debilitating.
Steph and I want to talk to you if you have been affected by the opioid crisis. If you have something to share, give us a call or a text: ☎️(612) 568-4441.

People tend to tiptoe around anything to do with widowhood. We know that people are clumsy with their words and their actions, and often, they don’t want to say the wrong thing or ask the wrong questions. Oftentimes, widows don’t even want to ask these questions to fellow widows. So, our inbox fills with the questions people are too scared to ask – about dating widows, about grief’s permanence, about moving forward without forgetting your person, and about widows dating other widows. Today, Nora is joined by fellow widow Rebecca Woolf to go through your burning questions and talk about grief, dating after loss, and the practical questions no one ever wants to get into.
If you are a widow (or know a widow!) and have questions you wish you could ask, this episode will answer them. If we don’t cover it in this episode, call or text us at 612-568-4441.

Our lives are shaped by our families. Not just our habits, family recipes, and noses – our stories, too. You probably know stories about your great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents, or, if you’re really into Ancestry.com, as far back as five hundred years ago. You might know the names, professions, quirks, and life stories of people who could have literally never imagined your existence, and you carry those things with you. For some people, these family legends are a point of pride.
It was for Ka Vang, too. She held tight to the heroic story of her father, Ying Vang, slipping away from the communist labor camp where he had been placed after being kidnapped in Laos, accompanied by an Australian pilot. But the real story? It doesn’t quite live up to the myth Ka knows. And now, as she’s preparing to pass on her family’s history to her children, she reflects on her own.

On today’s episode, Nora is joined by Elizabeth Kott to renew your hope in humanity and give you your much-needed dose of OK. If you continue to forget the days of the week (Tuesday shouldn’t exist and we are prepared to cut them out of our calendars), find joy in having and using multiple notebooks while constantly on the quest to find the most PERFECT notebook, and love gossiping about the Summer House reunion (the receipts re: the Amanda and West betrayal is INSANE), you are very much in the right place.
Take a moment today and find the OK with us.

People are clumsy when it comes to widows – we’ve made a handful of episodes about just how clumsy we can be. But we don’t often talk about how widows can be clumsy with others, too. In today’s episode, we meet caller Alex, who met her dream man on Hinge. He was emotionally available, kind, and very interested in her. He made her feel safe and valued and important, which made Alex feel like she was finally with the right guy.
The only complication? His wife had died a year earlier. And Alex, despite her best efforts, can’t help but feel like she is being constantly compared to his dead wife and that she has to suppress her feelings in favor of his “bigger” loss. In this episode, Nora and Alex break down their relationship, their breakup, and the complications of grief and dating.

Some days, OK things are all around us and naming them is a breeze. On other days, it feels like you have never, EVER been OK in your entire life. Whatever day you’re having, Nora and special guest and friend of the pod Jo Piazza are bringing you a message: to join them in their version of a 90s summer of surrender. They talk about lowering expectations, enjoying the whimsical little things (think: bedazzled pill bottles and cold pasta salad in the heat), and what parenting in the summer looks like when it isn’t a 10 second Instagram reel.
