The Apple Seed

How much do you think about the natural world? With busy days at school and work, we may often forget the trees, grasses, rivers, and mountains that give us air, water, and a beautiful place to live. Today on The Apple Seed, enjoy hearing about people who preserve the environment—whether through activism, magic, or retelling childhood stories.

The great Christmas song, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, written by Edward Pola and George Wyle and first performed by Andy Williams, highlights many of the Christmas traditions in which you likely engage with your loved ones: There’ll be parties for hosting, marshmallows for toasting, and caroling out in the snow. On today’s episode of The Apple Seed we’ll hear a story from Bill Harley, as well performances by the Acting Company that will surely bring to mind some of your favorite holiday activities.

Here at the Appleseed, we love all holidays, but today we’re talking about Christmas. We have some great stories from storytellers Bob Reiser, Bil Lepp, and Jay O’Callahan all about presents, caroling, and food, but mostly they’re all stories about hope and family.

In this episode, enjoy the following:

“Up Up and Away” by Bob Reiser on Chopped Herring and Other Brooklyn Tales

“Big Sal and the Crystal Turkey” by Bil Lepp on A Not So Silent Night

“Christmas Candles” by Jay O’Callahan on Year Round With Jay O’Callahan

From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a regular episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.

"What you give to others will come back to you tenfold." That's the lesson learned from Dan Keding's "The Wolf's Debt." Sam is joined in the studio by Ian Puente.

"Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” On today’s BITE you’ll hear a story about a tailor who epitomizes that famous motto. Sam and guest Teresa Love listen to and discuss Liz Weir's "The Tailor and the Button".

In today's episode, get ready for Treasure Island 2020 episode 8: Captain Flint with a look at time travel as described by authors like Mark Twain and H.G. Wells. While there's no time travel in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, ideas about time travel were starting to gain popularity among readers in the years surrounding the publication of Treasure Island. All this, and a conversation with Rod Gustavson about the film Shadowlands (a story about C.S. Lewis and his marriage to Joy Gresham). There's an entry in the Radio Family Journal about finding sand dollars on the beach, too!
