The Apple Seed

The beauty of language is in its versatility: it can unite and divide, inspire and humble, make fun and make sober. Sometimes it works just as we intended and sometimes it fails spectacularly. But there’s one thing that stays consistent across this complicated and even convoluted subject: language is so bound up in culture that it naturally creates stories. From ancient Mayan writings to the Navajo code talkers of World War II, join the Apple Seed team as we listen to stories about language and how it shapes our experience through life.

At the Apple Seed, we are no strangers to fishing. It’s a popular activity, means of subsistence, and, for some, a philosophy for living. The Apple Seed has many episodes and stories about fishing which you can find in our archive. However, the word “fishing” can indicate not only the process of catching fish, but also the search for anything that seems elusive. Today, enjoy a set of stories by Sheila Arnold, Doug Elliot, Kevin Kling, Liz Weir, and Joseph Sobol, partially about catching fish, but mostly about searching for something that is less tangible and longer lasting.

In story, as in life, things sometimes go terribly wrong. We’re always grateful to those who are able, through skill, bravery, or sheer luck, to put things right again. Sometimes that person is even ourselves, though we rarely succeed alone. Today, enjoy two stories by Sharon Kennedy and The Storycrafters about two heroes who are able to face terrible curses (magical or otherwise) and undo them, making life better for those around them.
