If you've ever caught yourself saying, "My house is cluttered because..." you're not alone. There are genuine reasons why clutter builds up, from ADHD and autism to chronic illness, grief, financial pressure, caring responsibilities, or simply being in a demanding season of life. Those challenges are real, but they don't have to leave you feeling powerless. Instead of asking who's to blame, consider asking, "What can I do differently because of this reality?" That simple shift moves you from feeling stuck to finding practical solutions that work for your unique circumstances. You'll hear examples of how to reframe common barriers, whether you're living with chronic pain, navigating mental health challenges, adjusting to a new baby, or managing a busy family. Rather than expecting yourself to follow systems designed for someone else's life, you can create systems that support the way you live right now. You'll also explore the blame that often gets directed towards partners, children and even well-meaning grandparents. While you can't control other people's behaviour, you can take ownership of the spaces, routines and decisions that are within your control. A cluttered home doesn't mean you've failed. It often reflects the season you're in. By acknowledging what's true, adjusting your expectations where needed and taking one small step forward, you can create a home that feels calmer, more functional and easier to maintain, without guilt or perfection. In this conversation with Tyler Moore, better known as Tidy Dad, you'll discover how a mental health breakdown, a tiny New York apartment and the chaos of raising young children became the catalyst for creating a simpler, more intentional life. You don't need a bigger house, more money or a perfectly organised home to live well. What you need is alignment between your space, your values and the life you actually want. Together, we explore why decluttering is about far more than getting rid of stuff. It's about making decisions that reduce overwhelm, creating systems that make tidying easy, and learning to stop chasing the life you think you should want. You'll hear why "just enough" is a freeing mindset, how to let go of the fear of "what if I need it someday?", and why decluttering often uncovers deeper life changes. Tyler also shares his concept of "surthrival", those seasons when life stretches you beyond your capacity, and practical ways to find joy even in the middle of difficult circumstances. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by clutter, questioning your priorities, or simply wanting a home that supports the life you want to live, you'll come away encouraged to make choices that create more freedom, not more pressure. Your home doesn't need to be perfect. It simply needs to make room for what matters most. Keeping your home clean isn't just about cleaning. It starts much earlier than that. If you've ever felt frustrated because no matter how much you clean, your home never seems to stay that way, it might be because you're trying to start at the wrong end of the roadmap. Instead of focusing on cleaning first, work your way through the roadmap that make cleaning easier. Start by understanding your why. Knowing why you want a calmer, cleaner home gives you the motivation to begin. From there, declutter by letting go of what you no longer need. Once you have less to manage, you can categorise similar items, create organised homes for everything, and make tidying a simple matter of putting things back where they belong. When your home is organised, tidying becomes quicker. When it's tidy, cleaning suddenly takes a fraction of the time and effort. Rather than trying to overhaul your entire home at once, choose one small space, like your bathroom or wardrobe, and work through each step. Build the right foundation before moving on to another area. Remember the roadmap: Know your why → Get motivated → Declutter → Categorise → Organise → Tidy → Clean Download the Roadmap Here When you follow the steps in that order, maintaining your home becomes far more achievable, and you'll spend less time managing your stuff and more time enjoying your home. Do you organise your home based on what works best, or what looks best? The answer might explain why some spaces are easy to maintain while others never seem to stay organised. Discover the difference between functional organising and aesthetic organising. Instead of trying to copy someone else's organising style, learn how to identify what actually motivates you and helps your home function well. You’ll most likely land on a combination of both functional and aesthetic organising which makes total sense. You'll hear practical examples from all around the house, including wardrobes, bathrooms, pantries, paperwork, pet supplies, charging stations and medications. You'll also see how small changes, like removing lids, choosing matching containers or leaving everyday items visible, can completely change how easy a space is to maintain. If you're someone who loves beautiful labels, matching containers and calm-looking spaces, you'll understand why those details matter. If you're more interested in quick, practical systems that are easy to use, you'll be reassured that function is just as valuable. Rather than choosing one style over the other, you'll be encouraged to find the balance that suits your personality, budget and lifestyle. Some areas of your home may benefit from prioritising function, while others are worth making visually appealing because they'll motivate you to stay organised. Take a fresh look around your home and ask yourself one simple question: does this space need to be functional, aesthetic, or a little bit of both? Do you have a room in your home that has become the place where unhoused clutter ends up? A spare room/ junk room full of boxes, furniture, paperwork, and things you don't quite know what to do with? You might have a Doom Room. A doom room is often the result of delayed decisions. Instead of finding a permanent home for things, you place them in a room "for now" and eventually that room becomes overwhelming. The key to reclaiming the space is to give it a purpose. When you know what you want the room to become, it becomes much easier to decide what stays and what goes. Start by removing the obvious donations and larger items you no longer need. Momentum builds quickly when you begin seeing space reappear. If the room still feels overwhelming, don't try to make every decision at once. Sort items into categories and create smaller "doom boxes" instead. Group paperwork together, photos together, tools together, and sentimental items together. Suddenly, you're no longer dealing with an entire room of chaos. You're simply making decisions one category at a time. If the room genuinely needs to function as storage, make it intentional. Add shelving, use labelled containers, and create systems that make everything easy to find and put away. One small decision at a time can turn a Doom Room into a purposeful, peaceful space that works for your life again.
