Quotable moments:
20:29: “Basically [autophagy] is when your body doesn't have any nutrients coming in and your body doesn't have to release all this insulin to process like blood sugar and all this stuff, your body kind of has a chance to like look inward on itself and clean itself up.”
21:02: *“So what starts happening is it, it kind of finds like misbehaving cell. Like cell components that are like just kind of dying or just old and then it kind of just recycles them or just completely gets rid of them. So it's kind of like a renewal mechanism.”
23:16 “Like, I get companies all the time are asking me like, you know, they're trying to make these autophagy products, and I'm like, no, sorry, I'm not interested. I just don't think we have enough information about this. You know, all the questions I was saying, like how much protein, like what should we put in the shake? Like, so we can call it an autophagy shake. And I was like, just don't do that.”*
26:20 “I'd say intermittent fasting either has like no effect usually on, on reproductive hormones, but it may actually benefit people with PCOS. But results are still to come.”
28:49 “So right now we only have like a couple studies in rodent models showing that are very similar to what we're seeing with the calorie restriction data. Like if you restrict yourself or a by like 20% of energy needs, they'll live 20% longer. If you restrict them by 30%, they'll live 30% longer up until I think a max of 30%. It's kind of like this mirroring effect. None of that's been shown in humans though.”

Like when we use it in the phrase pathological liar, okay? They just can't stop. It's like they, they know better, but they just have this compulsion almost to do it, right?
40:18 “It sounds crazy to consider what I'm proposing here, that you can choose a positive position no matter what your circumstances are. That sounds crazy. It does, but it's also going to the compulsively driven, it's a dogged determination to purposefully. Opt for the positive from a plethora of possible perceptions. You just do it on purpose.”

18:01: “People who are more physically active through any form of recreation, sport, or exercise, they're happier in every way. You can measure, they have more love, more gratitude, more confidence, more meaning in life. And I think it's because, when you look at the activities that most of us are drawn to, they either bring out what is best in us, you know, our courage, our creativity, our competitiveness, our persistence.” - Kelly McGonigal
20:09: “Every form of movement has a parallel to some sort of recreational or spiritual drug. You know, movement gives you an opportunity to tap into the brain's natural capacity to give you chemicals that make you feel good, that make you confident, that help you connect with other people that give you hope.” - Kelly McGonigal
20:30 “You mentioned endocannabinoids and the runner's high. That's one type of exercise high, and it turns out that if you engage in moderate-intensity movement continuously for about 20 minutes, your brain releases more endocannabinoids. And that along with things like dopamine and adrenaline. That gives you a very specific sense of feeling powerful and also loving.” - Kelly McGonigal
23:01 “Music gives you an endorphin rush and an extra hit of dopamine and adrenaline. So listening to music that you love enhances any exercise high. And also enhances, um, the bonding effect. Music also makes us feel more connected to others.” - Kelly McGonigal
24:53 “If you listen to music, You are going to require less oxygen to do the same amount of work. It's, it's kind of magical. It can help you be faster, it can help you be stronger. It makes hard things feel less effortful and also more enjoyable.” - Kelly McGonigal
32:25 “It's like you have a pharmacy in your muscles and they can create all these chemicals that, that improve your heart health, that boost immune function, that kill cancer cells that make your bones stronger. It's amazing. And some of these chemicals actually target the brain and your muscles wait for movement to release them. - Kelly McGonigal

Paper: Intermittent Energy Restriction Attenuates the Loss of Fat Free Mass in Resistance Trained Individuals. A Randomized Controlled Trial
Quotable moments:
30:05: “Reducing calories and manipulating your carbs helps lose fat and maintain muscle mass when you are strength training.”
31:58: “[Through this protocol] over the course of seven weeks, both groups lost a similar amount of fat, but through the body comp analysis, they looked at, um, measuring lean body mass, fat-free, mass dry, fat-free mass.”
33:45: “This goes to show that we know that in a caloric deficit, there is a reduced amount of muscle protein synthesis. That's why resistance training increases muscle protein synthesis. You eat a good amount of protein. And you can maintain the muscle mass that you have.”

27:28: “We've got creator, self, spouse, children, extended family, other people outside of your family and things. Those are our seven key relationships, and I believe they come in that order of priority if there are some that are missing or not.”
28:39: “I hear people talk about God. But it all has this kind of unifying meaning of a higher power that creates purpose. And if we understand our source, It helps us to navigate all of the complexities of our life because it gives us meaning and purpose.”
32:30 “And this is why there are so many different religions and other philosophical practices out there as people try to gain purpose and meaning for life. You know, those classic questions, why am I here and where did I come from and where am I going? Right? I mean there are existential questions that I think drive all of the other key relationships.”
35:09 “And it's so interesting to me that two people can come together, love each other enough to reproduce, and then. When they split, there's a process that happens in the mind. It comes from cognitive dissonance.”
37:23 “So you get yourself in a good place, and then you step up to creation mode with that energy of gratitude for the rich, abundant marriage that you have. You take that energy to creation mode. Now how can we up upgrade this?”

Episode 1 Quotable moments:
00:36: “Intermittent fasting is really just a period of like eating and then a period of not eating. So it's something that we do almost like when we go to sleep at night and stop eating and then wake up and start eating again.”
2:53: “Just by limiting your window to like six or eight hours per day, that naturally reduces energy intake by anywhere from like, Three to 600 calories per day. So it kind of has like a built-in calorie restriction, which is on par with like daily calorie restriction diets.”
04:09: “Our bodies are like really insulin sensitive in the mornings, so our ability to like put away sugar is really good right when we wake up and then it gets worse over the course of the day.
15:37: *“With time-restricted eating, we do see a bit of muscle loss, but it's the same amount that you'd see with any diet. People are a bit worried that intermittent fasting like increases muscle loss, but it doesn't. You basically just lose whatever you lose with typical calorie restriction.”
16:17: “[People] can do two things or a combination of doing resistance training, so like weightlifting can help, any weight-bearing activity really helps. And then particularly combining that with like a higher protein diet.*

Episode 3 Quotable moments:
00:36: “People forget that Jeff Bezo started by himself, and then eventually, he opened or started Amazon with 10 people. So it did start as a small company and he had to encourage stakeholders and investors and partners and employees to rally around a vision. So that's what I learned from Bezos and other exceptional leaders, that we all need a North star.”
01:56: “[Jeff Bezos] really had to make sure that everybody involved with building that company was aware that things had to be super simple, easy to use, and gave customers a sense of trust so it would make sense that the vision was Earth's most customer-centric company.”
05:49: “When you walked into a meeting with Jeff Bezos, everyone who's worked with him will tell you this. There's an empty chair in the room. What does the empty chair symbolize? The empty chair symbolizes the most important voice in the room, the person who is not there, and that's the customer. What would the customer think of your idea? How would that idea simplify their life? How would it make them better?"
06:31: "Whether it's a household company, whether it's a sports team, whether it's a startup or an organization, or a department, someone has to be the keeper of the vision because people need to be led."

QUOTES
“The key is using stress and adapting to it and improving. That’s what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem
“I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you’re leading, you’re a leader. If you’re swimming you’re a swimmer, if you’re driving you’re a driver. If you’re leading you’re by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it’s your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce
"Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl
“That’s what I’ve discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry
"Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem
"Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day!. That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik Korem
