Stockholm-based journalist, Philip O'Connor has spent years warning people about the rise of ugly nationalism and the far right and he rejoins us on the tortoise shack to discuss what the events in Sandwith Street, Inch, Santry and elsewhere tell us about obvious machinations of the far right playbook and how we're repeating the mistakes of others.
We look at the role of politics, media and a minority in civil society in sowing the seeds that allowed these dangerous movements to take root. Do check out Philip's podcast at:https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/our-man-in-stockholm/id1422798900 his recent chat with Aofie Gallagher is excellent.

The US is having a huge banking crisis, there's a debt ceiling disaster that promises to only increase the misery on those who are already struggling and politically the place seems more polarised than ever. So we went back to our Irish-Russian Colorado-based Professor of Economics pal, Constantin Gurdgiev, to look at what is going on and what is likely to happen. Constantin, as always, doesn't disappoint.

The Minister for Housing, Darragh O'Brien, came back to the tortoise shack for the first time this year for a full and pretty frank conversation on the many challenges the housing emergency has created.
We discuss the 'right to housing', the no-fault eviction ban, the 11,998 people who are officially homeless, the asylum seeker accommodation crisis, the tension between government departments, the need to seriously address Traveller accommodation, tackling short-term rentals and lots more.

The Nature Restoration Regulation is the flagship legislative proposal of the Biodiversity Strategy. Yet if Fine Gael MEP's get there way, it'll never be more than words on a page. Joining us on the tortoise shack is Political Adviser with the Left Group in the European Parliament and one of the negotiators of the Proposal for a Regulation on Nature Restoration, Damien Thomson.
He busts scaremongering myths that are unfortunately getting reported as fact in many media outlets and explains how the framework would help countries like Ireland restore nature and usher in the Just Transition we've heard so much about. Why shouldn't we live in greener, cleaner and healthier spaces?
Please contact all Irish MEP's and let them know that you want this law implemented: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/ireland/en/your-meps

Listener favourite (and tortoise shack's Royal Correspondent), Professor Richard Murphy, rejoins us to talk about the state of UK politics post-local elections, the struggling economic environment that is pushing thousands into poverty and the insanity of the Central Banks across the globe who seem intent on continuing the policy of "beatings to continue until the public morale improves". Another cracker of a podcast with the Prof.

The Financial Times recently covered the "extraordinary" steps the Spanish government were taking to tackle their housing crisis. But are they as good as advertised and what, if anything, can Ireland learn from them?
Joining us to discuss this and the political polarisation in Spain are Madrid-based journalist, Eoghan Gilmartin and tortoise shack regular Prof Joe Haslam. We also talk bad banks, land banks and a little bit of Real Madrid history.

    (Note: Released Weds May 17th)
Until yesterday our guest, Karen Sugrue, was best known for as an Reproductive Healthcare Activist and an organiser with Together For Safety. What you didn't know was that she had been successfully sued by Iona Institute CEO, David Quinn, for a defamatory tweet, for which Mr. Quinn received €8,000.
Karen joins us to talk about the ordeal, the laws as presently constituted, the proposed changes, how her cancer treatment made her more resiliant throughout this process and why she didn't sign the Non Disclosure Agreement that Mr. Quinn proposed.

Help us keep the mics on by joining us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack
Martin has been rather fatalistic lately about the climate crisis. So rather than wallow alone we invited campaigning journalist for climate action, John Gibbons, so they could get all doomsday‘d together.
John outlines the very real climate changes that are happening now and the ways they are making life inhospitable in countries that had no part in their creation. This is not a happy podcast. But it is factual.

In this episode of Reboot Republic, Rory and Tony are joined by music producer and artist Meryl Streek, to discuss the inspiration and motivation behind his music, and his latest single "If this is life then I don't want it", which is released today (May 16th).
This single is a reaction to the housing crisis in Ireland and samples Rory's voice on the issue of generation locked out. Meryl talks about his own personal journey, grief and loss, and music influences, the anger of a generation and his hope to reach out and bring about change with his music.

    Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack
Did you know that the IDA have paid almost ten million euro of our money to a company that is pumping billions into fossil fuels? It's true. Citigroup are the second biggest financers of the fossil fuel industry in the world and they are tap, tap, tapping away in Dublin, only the destruction is in the Amazon.
Joining us to discuss what is happening, how it works and the ways we can stop it is climate finance director with stand.earth Richard Brooks. I get the feeling we'll be talking with Richard again soon.
