The Everyday Storyteller episodes

  • Lessons in customer storytelling by Carrie Bradshaw.

I used to dream of being Carrie Bradshaw from Sex in the City.

Not that I was in the slightest bit interested in fashion or bullish New York gentlemen, but I wanted to sit in a stylish apartment, doors flung open, chiffon curtains blowing in the wind, cigarette in hand, writing, being a journalist, having others hanging off my every word. I would regularly think to myself, what do I have to do to live like Carrie?

Plot spoiler: I never did, but I’ve come to terms with that.

In this episode, I share how you can use customer success stories to make what you do/sell and the life you create for others through your services and products irresistible to future clients. And by doing so, leaving them in no uncertain terms that you are the only person who can answer their key questions of:

“What do I have to do to feel like that?”

“How could my life change too?”

“I’m experiencing exactly the same challenges, could this work for me too?”

“I’m ready to feel like that customers does. Where do I sign up?”

  • How to create a vision of a better future for your customers with you in it!

Storytelling is a great way to move beyond talking about the features and benefits of your product or service, showing your customers what their life could look like and how it would improve if they bought from you.

In this episode I share a fictional story to demonstrate exactly how you can create stories which present an irritable future for your dream clients and a few key tips to help you including:

    1. Always start by understanding what’s important to your clients; what problems are they trying to solve, what are their desires and aspirations? You can then showcase the specific benefits and transformations your products or services can bring, aligned to your clients goals and dreams.
    2. Share real-life examples of customers who have achieved a brighter future by using your product or service. These success stories serve as powerful narratives to inspire potential customers
    3. Use words to paint a vivid picture and create an emotional connection.Use descriptive language to help your audience visualise how their lives could improve and tap into emotions like hope, happiness, pride and fulfilment.
    4. Don’t forget to share some behind-the-scenes stories as well to highlight your authenticity

    6. How to use storytelling to sell products.

In this episode I illustrate the power of storytelling in the context of product marketing dispelling the myth that storytelling is exclusively for service-based businesses and motivating you to recognise the story within your products.

When you're selling a product, you're not just offering an item but an idea, a feeling, and an experience. Using the example of handmade candles, I demonstrate how even seemingly insignificant products are essential elements in life's special moments and how understanding this can help you build a more personal connection with your customers.

    7. 8 questions to get you talking about your story today.

Worrying that your story isn’t interesting enough to share? If you’ve gone to all the effort of setting up and running your own biz, I bet you a year's worth of biscuits that you’ve got something interesting to say off the back of it.

To help you get started - or give you some inspiration for story-led content you can share on your socials, in your newsletters etc here are 8 questions to ask yourself and write a response to.  Make sure you show customers why your answer should matter to them and don’t forget a clear call to action for what you want them to do next!

      1. Why did you set up your business initially? What problem did it solve for you?
      2. What did the first 3/6/12 months teach you?
      3. If you could go back and do it all again, what would you do differently and why?
      4. What’s the biggest hurdle you’ve overcome? What did it teach you?
      5. How did you name your business and what does it mean?
      6. What’s your proudest moment and why? What about your most embarrassing?
      7. Who else has been part of your business success? Who would you like to thank?
      8. What’s next for you?

      10. What are my customers doing right now?

I share a valuable reminder about the importance of customer-centric storytelling by asking “What are my customers doing right now?” And adapting your message accordingly to better meet their real-time needs and challenges.

In this episode I share the story of a female maker who did exactly this and saw a huge boost in sales by addressing the timely concerns of her customers, despite it being slightly off message from her usual sales patter.

      11. Shhhh! I’m listening. Why we love to eavesdrop on other people’s conversations and what that means for business storytelling.

I explore the universal fascination with eavesdropping on other people's conversations. Delving into the innate curiosity that drives this behaviour, the episode highlights its connection to our deep-seated need for human connection and provides valuable insights into using eavesdropping as a tool for business storytelling.

From casual conversations to social media interactions, the episode emphasises the importance of keeping one's ears open for storytelling inspiration. However, it's vital to remember to respect boundaries and seek consent when incorporating private conversations into narratives.

By acknowledging our natural nosiness and learning to harness it responsibly you can engage and connect with an audience more effectively.

      12. How to tell a story with social purpose
If you've never explored Camden in North London, you're missing out. It's a place full of vibrant characters and unique experiences, like the independent store, Clime-it Brothers.
Clime-it Brothers isn't your average store. Instead of asking if they can help you, the shop assistant wants to share how your purchase can make a difference. Intriguing, right?
Clime-it Brothers is a social enterprise with a remarkable mission. It provides jobs and education to young people from challenging backgrounds, helping them escape gangs and drugs. The founder's personal transformation from a drug dealer to a change-maker adds depth to the story. Plus, they use environmentally friendly materials and processes.
My daughter and I bought a jacket and sunglasses, knowing our money was supporting a great cause. I was so moved by their story that I'm sharing it with you. That's the magic of storytelling.
If your business serves a social purpose or champions a cause, share it with your customers. Connect your values to theirs, creating strong emotional bonds. This not only drives sales but also encourages others to support your mission.

      13. Help your audience feel part of something that matters.

15 years ago, I started my first business by myself, facing panic attacks, and a lack of support from friends and family. Fast forward, I realised I wasn't alone; many women share similar experiences and now, with the growth of social media, there’s a platform to share them.

Connect Through Stories: Humans seek connection and shared experiences. Stories provide a platform to connect with your audience on a deeper, emotional level, making them feel seen and heard.

Expand Your World: Stories introduce us to diverse perspectives, fostering empathy, understanding, and personal growth. They connect us with people worldwide, despite differences on paper.

Combat Loneliness: Stories help people feel less alone in their struggles, empowering them to carve their space. Storytelling celebrates differences and builds invisible bonds.

Take Action: Consider sharing stories that resonate with your audience's needs, whether it's overcoming fear or dealing with loss and failure. Your voice and confidence can make a difference.

Subscribe to my podcast and leave a 5-star rating to help more women discover how to make their voices matter.

      14. How to tap into your customer's emotional decision making

Limbic System Magic: The warm, right feeling you get when making a decision? That's your limbic system at work, where emotions and decisions intertwine. Storytelling is your key.

The Gut Instinct Power: Gut decisions happen in the limbic brain, where emotions reside. They often feel right because they bypass our language centre. Storytelling ignites this brain region, leading to powerful emotional connections.

The Science of Emotion: Gut decisions tend to be faster and higher in quality. Pushing customers solely with rational thinking leads to overthinking. Instead, tell stories that create unbreakable emotional bonds.

Your Brand Story: Understand your "why" and have a clear brand story. This authenticity exudes passion and builds trust, forging genuine customer relationships.

Take Action: Recall a time when you instinctively trusted a seller. Analyse their engagement process. Apply these lessons to your business. Winning hearts before minds is your challenge. Stories are your solution.
