I am a secretary in a high school.  Being around students keeps me young at heart, but my body started feeling old, tired, and frumpy. Over the years I put on a few pounds a year and I got to the point where I thought I needed to just accept my weight gain as part of aging.  In April of 2021 someone posted a picture of me on Facebook and I couldn't believe it was me!  I felt like I really let myself down but didn’t know what to do about it.  I have never done a “diet plan” as I don’t like to cook, and I have no willpower to give up foods I like.  So, I was never a Yo-Yo dieter.

Around the same time that picture was posted, I randomly found Jason Fung on YouTube and watched his video on Intermittent Fasting.  I thought what Dr, Fung had to say made sense and was something I could try. I now look at finding that video not as random at all but maybe a divine intervention!   Over the next four months, I would also find Gin Stephens podcast and Graeme Currie with the Fasting Highway podcast and started listening every night.  I started reading books on fasting to learn all I could.   I fast an average of 19 hours per day with various lengths of eating windows and to my amazement lost 30. pounds in four months and went from a size 12 to a size 6.  My physical body now matches my mind and I feel better at 58 than I did at 48.  I willingly share with my friends about IF and the fact they don't need to settle in the body they are in, if it is not the one that is making them happy.

Elaine Heyworth – Bio

I’m Elaine Heyworth, 55 years of age, married with two grown-up daughters – 20, and 22. I started intermittent fasting in September 2019, the day I left my youngest daughter at university – and came home to an empty nest. My weight was 221lbs.

All my life I had been overweight. Thirty years ago I joined Weight Watchers, and lost four stone (56lbs) in six months. Six months later I started putting it back on again. Then I met my husband to be (Julian), and we settled into what I call our “contentment lifestyle” – food seemed to celebrate the great things going on, and cheered up the horrible things that happen. That 56lbs soon came back, with reinforcements. Then came children, and I put on a stone (14lbs) with each child (which wasn’t much, according to my doctor), but that meant two more stones where I didn’t need them!

I was always pretty sensible about my dieting life – I didn’t do diets that demonised food. My two favourite diets were Weight Watchers and Slimming World – both plans allowed you eat all the foods, with their own brand of compensation for ‘treating’ yourself. You know, even thirty years later, I still weigh 75g of rice or pasta before I cook it – my top tip from Weight Watchers – so I think I learned some useful stuff there.

IF has been a revelation to me. I started with 16:8, and lost 12lbs in the first three weeks – I know how lucky I was. Then I tried 18:6 for a couple of weeks, then found my sweet spot at 19:5, where I lost another 30lbs. COVID was a game changer – once I was working from home, within five steps of my kitchen, I had to change to 20:4, because food was too easy to find. Lost my final 14lbs between March and June of 2020 and hit my goal of 165lbs at the end of June 2020. So exciting!!!!

My husband and daughters have been very supportive, although I do sometimes hear ‘don’t lose any more weight Mum!!”, I know it’s said with love in their hearts.

Alan Zerbe lives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania which is about 50 miles north of Philadelphia and about 70 miles West of New York City. He just turned 57 is Married and has three grown daughters ages 26 and twins who just turned 24. He currently works as an Art Director in marketing for a University.

As a kid he was often described as “skinny.” And always struggled to gain weight at 17 he was 6'1" about 175 lbs. (or 79 Kilos). During his 20, 30's, 40's and 50’s he kept gaining until he reached his highest recorded weight of 294 lbs. (or 133 Kilos) on his 6'2" frame.

His fasting journey began in May of 2018 and he has not stopped the past three and half years. It has been an amazing journey of learning and experimenting. It all started with him reading Jason Fung’s book The Obesity Code and was interested in learning if his weight issues could be controlled with fasting. While his path has been far from perfect, he battles everyday doing the best fasting work he can do that day! He has gotten as low as 189 lbs. or (86 Kilos). He is working hard at the maintenance phase with a goal of staying between 195 and 205 lbs.

He loves the lifestyle and believes it to be life changing in more ways than his exterior image might reflect. Deep inside he knows he has become a much better version of himself.

I am a homeschooling mother of 3 who also teaches private voice lessons and directs musical theater for students in middle school and high school and I have a very supportive husband in all of that! We enjoy the beautiful outdoors in Colorado! We enjoy camping as well and hiking,  paddle boarding and kayaking. Fasting has given me the freedom and the energy to finally truly enjoy these things with my family! I have fasted in the past. It actually helped me to lose weight in the past but I didn't know why or if it was really working because I was also training for a triathlon at the same time, in 2012, after having my 3rd child. I am not an athlete but I was trying to find acceptance in my body and prove that I could do something athletic! Unfortunately, this change didn't last long and I gained my weight back and kept it on for 8 more years! In June of 2020 I was ready for a change! I was tired of being tired and overweight. But I had sworn off diets and did not know what to do. That is when Delay, Don't Deny came into my life through my dear friend. I read that book in one sitting on June 20 and started that day! My first fast was 18 hours and I have been fasting at least 16 hours, but mostly 18-20 hours for 470 fasts now, I am closing in on 500 fasts! I have lost 30 pounds and kept it off! And I keep losing inches! I was in a tight plus sized 18W jean and am now in a regular size 14 jean. And I wore plus sized 1X shirts and now wear a Small or Medium.

Paulus van Eeden is a Colonel in the South African Police Service. He was born in Durban ON 11 February 1971, he is 50 years old and grew up in Gauteng where he is currently also residing and working. He enjoys nature and goes camping when there is time to relax in his busy schedule. He is married with two daughters, one is 3RD year at university and the other is in grade 9.

During the nineties he was very active and participated in cycling as a sport. He also become a cycling “spinning” instructor. As life continued from 2014 he slowly had fallen into a pattern of eating the wrong food especially treats and fast foods. Gradually he gained weight until he weighed 125 kg due to long working hours in the Law Enforcement environment. In September 2020 he decided to make and change and be healthy before his 50th birthday in February 2021. The birthday went pass and he carried on with his life and bad eating habits. He was also having constant heartburn as a result of being overweight. By that time still weighing 122kg.

His blood pressure was high as well as cholesterol levels. He started getting blackouts due to high blood pressure and ended up in hospital. In hospital the final decision was made to take control again of his eating habits. A few weeks later a friend told him about intermitted fasting and he joined the fasting highway Facebook page and started following the 13/11 fasting routine. He has been on the 13/11 fasting plan since April 2021. The journey require discipline every day to make the correct food choices.

He was inspired by those who shared their fasting success stories on the Fasting highway as well as other wellness Facebook pages. The main inspiration was to take back control of his health and correct the high blood pressure and cholesterol with weight reduction and not medication. Since he lost weight his blood pressure returned to normal as well as normal cholesterol levels.  The constant heart burn is also gone. Energy levels improved.

His fasting routine include a small breakfast with oats or similar and a fruit. During fasting only water. Dinner consists of protein, starch and vegetables / salad. Sugar, alcohol and snacks were eliminated from his diet as well as coffee due to high blood pressure.

On weekends if there is a social event he adjust the plan to have a bigger breakfast or change breakfast for lunch. He monitors his weight constantly and if he see there is an increase (for example when the family goes on holiday and eat special treats) he goes back to the strict intermitted fasting plan to reduce weight.

His weight loss statistics are as follow:

SW 125kg

CW 93

GW between 92 and 88 Kg

Age 50

Height 193 cms

Neva is a realtor in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Her weight got to the point where, in July of 2020, she seriously wondered if she could handle showings houses in 100 degree summer temps that are typical of the area. As Neva describes it, "We run into houses, up the stairs, down and out, and on to the next one. The stairs were the killer. I was worried. And the work really only starts with the showings - then you run home and start writing the contract paperwork. My brain had to be online." Neva is a fiend for architecture, to the point that she got the Historic Homes Specialist certificate. From the modest mid-century ranch homes, to the full-fledged Mid-Century Moderns, to Craftsman Bungalows, to Victorian Painted Ladies, it's a passion of hers. Before getting into real estate, Neva was a techie in the corporate world, and she says those skills come in handy. She says Excel is her favorite "game." Perhaps that explains her love of entering the numbers into ALL the apps AND her own spreadsheet. But she owns to a good bit of OCD too. A self-avowed recovering crazy cat woman, at one time Neva cared for dozens of cats, and was active in pet rescue. Now the number approaches something more normal, and vet bills are more manageable. She still points people towards resources, and fields random questions about cat behavior. Scratching posts need to be *where??* When she comes up for air, Neva does enameling as a hobby and has a kiln and a hydraulic press as part of her setup. And then there's music: Neva is avid about live music - bluegrass, rockabilly, blues, jazz, classical. She worked at a club near Washington, DC in her youth. She's looking forward to more energy for all of these activities from her success with IF.
