I had a remarkable conversation recently with a private client that completely blew me away. He taught me something profound about complacency in business success – how it operates exactly like an alcoholic’s greatest enemy. When an alcoholic doesn’t practice their 12 steps daily, they get complacent about recovery, and that’s when they slide backward. For them, complacency could literally cause death.

Isn’t that true for every one of us? When we get complacent about complacency in business success and stop practicing the disciplines and skill sets we’re developing, we might not die – but we could absolutely lose our business, relationships, or everything we’ve built. I witnessed this with my grandmother’s friend – a top real estate agent who was sober for 20 years until one devastating day. After learning his daughter died, he had one beer. In just one week, he was a falling-down drunk again. That’s how complacency in business success works – the old monster is always in the shadows, waiting.

The most dangerous place for complacency in business success is with your sales calls. If those calls aren’t happening and you’re not getting better, you’re not building a business – you’re going out of business! The most important wins are the financial ones because they give you options for everything else. When you master the skill set of bringing in money at the number you need whenever you need it, you experience extraordinary calm and peace. Don’t get complacent!
