In this episode, 195 - Is There Something Wrong With Me?, I tackle the common narrative that there is something wrong with today's youth and young adults. I share my frustration with this perspective and explain why it can be so detrimental.

The key is understanding confirmation bias - the way our brains seek to prove what we already believe to be true. When we tell someone they are broken or lacking in some way, that's all their brain will focus on. Instead, I encourage focusing on what's going right, looking towards a positive future, and lifting others up. We need to quit pointing out problems and instead empower the rising generation to see their own worth and potential.

Ultimately, there is nothing wrong with you. You are a divine creation of our Heavenly Parents, and any struggles you face are part of the human experience. With the Savior's help, you can overcome anything. Let's shift the narrative and start celebrating all the amazing things young people are capable of.

Hey everyone, thanks for tuning in to the latest episode of the LDS Mission Podcast! Today on episode 194. Getting Past Mental Roadblocks, we're talking about something that I know so many of us struggle with - mental roadblocks and limiting beliefs.

As I shared, it's so easy for us to get caught up in this idea that we need to have the "right" thoughts and feelings before we can take action. But the truth is, those mental roadblocks are never going to fully go away. Our brains are wired to seek out problems and want to avoid discomfort. So instead of waiting around for the perfect mindset, I encouraged listeners to just feel the fear or insecurity and do it anyway. We can't let our inner critic, that "Grumpy Grandma" voice, keep us stuck.

It's all about having the courage to take small steps forward, even when it feels uncomfortable. Because that's where the real growth and progress happens. Hey there, in episode 193 - The Journey of a Client, I share the journey that many of my clients go through as they work with me.

It's a process of becoming more aware, understanding the mechanics of our thoughts and feelings, and then navigating the back-and-forth of taking ownership versus blaming others. As we move through this journey, my clients often become self-critical before they learn to have compassion for themselves and the human experience.

This is a crucial step, as it allows them to fully surrender and embrace the progression that is part of life. I explain that personal development is not a linear path, but more like climbing a mountain, where we revisit certain aspects of ourselves at each new bend.

Ultimately, I hope this episode provides a helpful framework for anyone going through a period of growth and change, whether that's preparing for a mission, returning from one early, or just navigating the ups and downs of life. Welcome to podcast episode 192 - Stuff I Wish Every Missionary Knew. On today's episode we'll talk about, as missionaries, there's so much I wish we all knew from the start. In this episode, I'm sharing 8 key insights that can help provide peace, purpose and resilience throughout your mission experience.

First and foremost, your job is simply to show up and share Christ's light. Don't get caught up in numbers or specific outcomes - Jesus is the true miracle, not the baptisms or other measurable results. Remember that God's plan is perfect, and you can't derail it no matter what. Your feelings, even the tough ones like anxiety, are completely normal and okay. Focus on what you're doing well, not your shortcomings.

Planting seeds through your invitations and presence matters, even if you don't see the harvest. And keep your hope anchored in Jesus Christ and God's eternal plan, not just the immediate outcomes you desire. Apply these principles, and watch how your mission experience transforms.

Episode 190- What Are You Avoiding?

Are you someone who tends to live in your head, always overthinking and analyzing? Or do you find yourself constantly swept up in your emotions, unable to see the bigger picture? Maybe you're the type who just stays busy, using action to avoid both thinking and feeling.

In this episode, we're exploring the idea that sometimes we can become "addicted" to one of these ways of being - thinking, feeling, or doing - as a way to avoid the others. I share insights from my coaching work, where I've noticed clients often fall into one of these camps. We discuss how this can happen as a protective mechanism, and why it's important to strive for more balance and integration of all aspects of our humanity.

The key is finding moderation - not perfection, but a "smoothie" of thoughts, feelings, and actions. I encourage you to reflect on what you might be avoiding, and experiment with adding more of the neglected element to your life. When we're willing to engage our minds, hearts, and bodies, we open ourselves up to a richer, more meaningful existence. Let's dive in!

What an incredible conversation I had with Logan Castleton, the Rapping Missionary for episode 189! As someone who has faced significant health challenges from birth, Logan's story of resilience, faith, and using his unique talents to further God's work is truly inspiring.

Logan shared how he was born with a rare heart condition and has undergone numerous surgeries, yet he never let that stop him from pursuing his passion for music. When he felt impressed to serve a service mission, Logan didn't let the stigma or misconceptions about service missions hold him back.

Instead, he boldly followed the inspiration he received to use his gift of music, including rapping, to uplift and minister to others. Logan's insights on adapting to challenges, finding purpose in adversity, and trusting in God's guidance are so valuable for any missionary, whether serving a proselyting or service mission. I'm deeply grateful Logan was willing to vulnerably share his story and the lessons he's learned. I know his example will encourage and uplift so many in the LDS mission community.

Elder Logan Castleton is a service missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He started as a Proselyting missionary and then transferred to be a service missionary. Between writing rap as the Rapping Missionary and writing piano arrangements, he finds joy in his service. He will finish his mission in the summer.

In episode 188 - Just Keep Going, I share the importance of just keeping going, even when the path ahead seems unclear or the results of your efforts aren't immediately visible.

As the host of the LDS Mission Podcast, I've experienced firsthand how small, consistent actions can lead to big impacts over time. When I first started sending out my weekly "Tuesday Tidbit" emails back in 2019, I had just 16 recipients. Now, that list has grown to thousands of missionaries, parents, and returned missionaries around the world. And while my podcast may have started with just 3 downloads in the first week, it now reaches thousands of listeners each month.

These are tangible examples of how staying the course, even when progress feels slow, can make your goals and dreams inevitable. The key is to believe in the value of your efforts, even when you can't see the full impact. Keep taking those small steps forward, trusting that your consistency and persistence will pay off. Whether you're serving a mission, preparing for one, or navigating life after your mission, this message of "just keep going" is one I hope will encourage and empower you to embrace your potential and never stop moving towards what matters most.

Hey there, mission friends! In episode 187 - When Missionaries in Your District Are Struggling, we're diving into how to support missionaries (or anyone on your team) who are struggling. As a mission coach, I know how challenging it can be to see the people you care about going through a tough time. But I've got five key strategies to help you show up as an effective leader and guide them through.

First, it's so important to normalize their feelings. When someone is feeling down or discouraged, our natural tendency is to try and "fix" it. But that can actually make them feel worse. Instead, validate what they're going through by saying things like "It makes total sense that you're feeling this way."

Next, avoid mirroring their emotions - if they're sad, don't get sad too. Stay grounded so you can think clearly about how to support them. And don't make assumptions about what they need. Ask questions to really understand their perspective.

Finally, help them refocus on the bigger purpose. Remind them of why you're all on this journey together, and how the ups and downs are all part of the process. These strategies will empower you to lead with compassion and wisdom, even in the midst of struggle. Your people need you to show up as your best self, and these tools will help you do just that. Here in episode 186 - Why We Care what Other People Think, we are going to discuss this topic because It's a question that comes up a lot, especially for missionaries and young adults navigating big life transitions. In this episode, I dive into the fascinating reasons behind our innate desire to compare ourselves to others and worry about their perceptions of us.

The truth is, this tendency to organize people into hierarchies and constantly assess our standing is a protective function of the brain - it has deep evolutionary roots in helping us ensure our survival. But just because it's natural doesn't mean we have to let it control us. I share practical strategies for managing comparison, like focusing more on what you think of yourself than what you imagine others are thinking.

The key is recognizing that your worth isn't defined by anyone else's opinions - you get to decide what you believe about yourself. Whether you're preparing for a mission, currently serving, or adjusting to life after, this episode will help you understand why the comparison game is so tempting, and empower you to stay in your own lane. Your mission and your life are unique to you - focus on your own strengths and goals, and let go of the need to measure up to anyone else.
