Episode 190- What Are You Avoiding?

Are you someone who tends to live in your head, always overthinking and analyzing? Or do you find yourself constantly swept up in your emotions, unable to see the bigger picture? Maybe you're the type who just stays busy, using action to avoid both thinking and feeling.

In this episode, we're exploring the idea that sometimes we can become "addicted" to one of these ways of being - thinking, feeling, or doing - as a way to avoid the others. I share insights from my coaching work, where I've noticed clients often fall into one of these camps. We discuss how this can happen as a protective mechanism, and why it's important to strive for more balance and integration of all aspects of our humanity.

The key is finding moderation - not perfection, but a "smoothie" of thoughts, feelings, and actions. I encourage you to reflect on what you might be avoiding, and experiment with adding more of the neglected element to your life. When we're willing to engage our minds, hearts, and bodies, we open ourselves up to a richer, more meaningful existence. Let's dive in!

What an incredible conversation I had with Logan Castleton, the Rapping Missionary, for Episode 189! As someone who has faced significant health challenges from birth, Logan's story of resilience, faith, and using his unique talents to further God's work is truly inspiring.

Logan shared how he was born with a rare heart condition and has undergone numerous surgeries, yet he never let that stop him from pursuing his passion for music. When he felt impressed to serve a service mission, Logan didn't let the stigma or misconceptions about service missions hold him back.

Instead, he boldly followed the inspiration he received to use his gift of music, including rapping, to uplift and minister to others. Logan's insights on adapting to challenges, finding purpose in adversity, and trusting in God's guidance are so valuable for any missionary, whether serving a proselyting or service mission. I'm deeply grateful Logan was willing to vulnerably share his story and the lessons he's learned. I know his example will encourage and uplift so many in the LDS mission community.

Elder Logan Castleton is a service missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He began as a proselyting missionary before transferring to a service mission. Between writing rap as the Rapping Missionary and creating piano arrangements, he finds joy in serving others. He will complete his mission this summer.

In episode 188 - Just Keep Going, I share the importance of just keeping going, even when the path ahead seems unclear or the results of your efforts aren't immediately visible.

As the host of the LDS Mission Podcast, I've experienced firsthand how small, consistent actions can lead to big impacts over time. When I first started sending out my weekly "Tuesday Tidbit" emails back in 2019, I had just 16 recipients. Now, that list has grown to thousands of missionaries, parents, and returned missionaries around the world. And while my podcast may have started with just 3 downloads in the first week, it now reaches thousands of listeners each month.

These are tangible examples of how staying the course, even when progress feels slow, can make your goals and dreams inevitable. The key is to believe in the value of your efforts, even when you can't see the full impact. Keep taking those small steps forward, trusting that your consistency and persistence will pay off. Whether you're serving a mission, preparing for one, or navigating life after your mission, this message of "just keep going" is one I hope will encourage and empower you to embrace your potential and never stop moving towards what matters most.

Hey there, mission friends! In episode 187 - When Missionaries in Your District Are Struggling, we're diving into how to support missionaries (or anyone on your team) who are struggling. As a mission coach, I know how challenging it can be to see the people you care about going through a tough time. But I've got five key strategies to help you show up as an effective leader and guide them through.

First, it's so important to normalize their feelings. When someone is feeling down or discouraged, our natural tendency is to try and "fix" it. But that can actually make them feel worse. Instead, validate what they're going through by saying things like "It makes total sense that you're feeling this way."

Next, avoid mirroring their emotions - if they're sad, don't get sad too. Stay grounded so you can think clearly about how to support them. And don't make assumptions about what they need. Ask questions to really understand their perspective.

Finally, help them refocus on the bigger purpose. Remind them of why you're all on this journey together, and how the ups and downs are all part of the process. These strategies will empower you to lead with compassion and wisdom, even in the midst of struggle. Your people need you to show up as your best self, and these tools will help you do just that. Here in episode 186 - Why We Care what Other People Think, we are going to discuss this topic because It's a question that comes up a lot, especially for missionaries and young adults navigating big life transitions. In this episode, I dive into the fascinating reasons behind our innate desire to compare ourselves to others and worry about their perceptions of us.

The truth is, this tendency to organize people into hierarchies and constantly assess our standing is a protective function of the brain - it has deep evolutionary roots in helping us ensure our survival. But just because it's natural doesn't mean we have to let it control us. I share practical strategies for managing comparison, like focusing more on what you think of yourself than what you imagine others are thinking.

The key is recognizing that your worth isn't defined by anyone else's opinions - you get to decide what you believe about yourself. Whether you're preparing for a mission, currently serving, or adjusting to life after, this episode will help you understand why the comparison game is so tempting, and empower you to stay in your own lane. Your mission and your life are unique to you - focus on your own strengths and goals, and let go of the need to measure up to anyone else. In episode 185 - Another Take On Relationships, I share some insights I've been reflecting on when it comes to relationships. I've noticed that a large portion of my podcast episodes tend to focus on relationships, and I think that's because relationships are such a fundamental part of our lives, whether it's our companions, our families, our coworkers, or the people we interact with on a daily basis.

I've been pondering the purpose behind why we're asked to be in families and serve in congregations. I believe it's because these relationships provide us with opportunities to learn about ourselves. When we interact with people who have different backgrounds, experiences, and ways of doing things, it can either drive us apart or serve as our greatest teachers. I encourage listeners to see the people in their lives, even the ones who may be challenging, as teachers rather than problems. Our differences don't have to be a source of conflict; they can be a chance for growth and transformation.

Ultimately, I believe the key is to focus on our own personal responsibility and growth, rather than trying to "fix" a relationship or a companionship. By working on ourselves and changing our own thoughts and feelings, we can positively impact our relationships and create more harmony and understanding. I hope this episode inspires you to embrace the relationships in your life as opportunities for learning and self-discovery.

Here in Episode 184 - This Is God's Work we talk about as missionaries, it's so easy to get caught up in the pressure to perform and meet our goals. Whether it's baptisms, finding new investigators, or any other metric, the stress and anxiety can really start to weigh us down.

In this episode, I open up about some recent conversations I've had with missionaries who are feeling overwhelmed by the need to "succeed." I share my heart on why we have to reframe how we think about this work - it's not about our own efforts, it's about trusting in God's perfect plan. Our job is to invite and love, not to control the outcomes.

When we can embrace that truth, it frees us up to serve with joy and confidence, instead of fear and doubt. The work may be hard, but the peace comes when we remember that salvation is ultimately in God's hands, not our own. I hope this episode encourages you to let go of the pressure, focus on what's in your control, and find the abundant joy in simply being a vessel for God's work. After all, this is His mission, not ours.

Episode 183 - Light in the Vessels, this Christmas episode is all about finding light in the darkness. As I've been preparing for holiday concerts and reflecting on the story of the brother of Jared, I've been struck by the powerful symbolism of the Lord causing the stones to shine in the darkness.

Even when life feels tumultuous, heavy, and disorienting, Christ's light can still shine. The tempests we face are often what's moving us towards the promised land, even if we can't see the full picture. I've had to really ponder whether I trust that the challenges in my life and the lives of those I love are part of God's plan to get us where we need to go.

Ultimately, I've realized that Jesus Christ is the only one who can truly light our vessels and provide the eternal perspective we need to find peace, even in our darkest moments. This Christmas, my prayer is that we can all fall on our knees before the Savior, trusting that He will catch us and guide us safely to our promised lands, in His own time. He is the light that can dispel any darkness.

As The LDS Mission Coach, I'm always looking for powerful stories and insights that can support current, future, and returned missionaries. This episode 182 - Mission and Post Mission Mental Health with my friend Mary Ward is one of those conversations that I know will resonate deeply.
