  • Longhorn Republic: June 21, 2022 - 0fer in Omaha and UTSA Preview
The Texas Longhorns made it back to Omaha but didn't spend much time there, leaving after losing their first two games against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Texas A&M Aggies. Both Texas starters struggled, while the offense failed to capitalize on baserunners -- which is a losing prospect in any environment. A day after the season ends, the coaching staff is already undergoing changes, with head coach David Pierce moving on from Sean Allen in an effort to fix some of the pitching issues. What do we make of this up-and-down season and will the coaching change yield any dividends?
We then welcome on Jared Kalmus of the Alamodome Audible podcast to help us preview the UTSA Roadrunners. Head coach Jeff Traylor is entering his third season, coming off of a 12-1 campaign, hoping to maintain that success as the Roadrunners deal with replacing some key contributors on both sides of the ball.

  • Longhorn Republic: June 16, 2022 - Previewing the Alabama Crimson Tide
As we inch closer and closer to the Texas Longhorns’ kickoff, we continue our summer previews with the marquee non-conference matchup, the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The newly sold-out game will mark the first time the two teams have squared off since the National Championship game that seemingly set both programs on opposite trajectories. Alabama has been the class of college football for the last 12 seasons, with six national championships and four Heisman Trophy winners — including current quarterback Bryce Young.
Alabama comes to town Week 2 to serve as a reunion for Steve Sarkisian and Nick Saban, with Sark squaring off against his former boss after helping lead them to their most recent national championship. Texas also features three players that made the jump to Austin from Tuscaloosa with Keilan Robinson joining a year ago, while Jahleel Billingsly and Agiye Hall joining for the 2022 season.
So what should we expect from the juggernaut of college football, hoping to march through Austin on their way to the College Football Playoff?

  • Longhorn Republic: June 13, 2022 - Heading Back to Omaha
In spite of a Friday afternoon scare, the Texas Longhorns are heading back to Omaha for the Men's College World Series -- trip No. 38 in the 75-year history of the event. Texas, in spite of troubles in the regular season, is exactly where everyone expected them to be, it just took a bit of a different journey to get there. Now they sit in a bracket with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who knocked off top-ranked Tennessee, as well as a pair of rivals -- the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas A&M Aggies.
Texas also brought home a pair of second-place finishes at the track and field national championships, giving coach Edrick Floréal his fourth top-two finish in three seasons at the helm for the Longhorns as he continues to build that program back.

  • Longhorn Republic: June 9, 2022 - ULM Preview
We are inching ever closer to the start of the 2022 football season, which means we are starting our week-by-week breakdowns of the Texas Longhorns schedule.
With 86 days left before kickoff, we start with the first opponent on the schedule, the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks, who are coming off of what could be considered a resurgent season despite the 4-8 record.
Under new head coach Terry Bowden, the Warhawks showed immediate improvement from the 2020 pandemic season, a year in which they played 10 games and never held a lead. That season ended the tenure of Matt Viator and ushered in the Bowden era. After one year, Bowden had to reshuffle his coaching staff as offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez bolted for Jacksonville State and took much of the coaching staff with him.
Bowden opted to bring back a name familiar with ULM to fill the void, former ULM offensive coordinator Matt Kubic. Kubic spent four years as the Warhawks' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, during which the Warhawks’ offense helped lead them to a 9-4 record.

  • Longhorn Republic: June 7, 2022 - Big Weekend on the Diamond
The Texas Longhorns took care of business in both the Austin Regional and in Oklahoma City, continuing what is turning out to be a very successful semester for the spring sports.
While there were fireworks in several other regionals, the baseball team seemingly cruised to a super regional berth, with a three-run win over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs sandwiched between two lopsided wins over the Air Force Falcons. The Longhorns got quality starts from their top two starters, with Pete Hansen and Lucas Gordon giving up just four runs in their starts, while the Longhorns scored 26 runs over the weekend.
The softball team's weekend was a little more dramatic than the baseball team, but they still managed to come out on top and become the first team in school history to reach the WCWS finals. After knocking off Oklahoma State twice on Monday, the Longhorns now face the Oklahoma Sooners - who have dropped just three games all season. However, one of those three was to Texas, snapping their winning streak.
With all of that success, Texas is now in prime position to claim its second-consecutive Director's Cup, given to the top athletic department in the country. We welcome back Brett Wilkinson to dive in on how the math favors Texas as the academic year draws to a close.

  • Longhorn Republic: June 2, 2022 - Previewing Summer Recruiting
We start off the show with a celebration, as the Texas Longhorns claimed their second national championship this week thanks to the men's golf team knocking off the Arizona State Sun Devils in the match play championship. That makes the third national title in two weeks for Texas and the fourth of the academic year, with still more teams in title contention.
Next, Mike Roach makes his long-awaited return to the podcast, to help us preview the upcoming slate of summer visitors, including the biggest name still left on the board. What should Texas fans expect from the next stage of 2023 recruiting, who should we have our eyes on as Texas makes a push to close, and will Arch Manning's decision really have that big of an impact on how the 2023 class shakes out?

  • Longhorn Republic: May 31, 2022 - Baseball Regionals and a Rowing Championship
The Texas Longhorns came up one game short of a conference championship on Sunday, falling to the Oklahoma Sooners in the conference tournament,
However, thanks to a solid run to end the regular season and in the conference tournament, as well as the decision to announce the regional hosts before the conference tournament was over, Texas found itself hosting a regional once again. Bringing the Air Force Falcons, Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, and Dallas Baptist Patriots to town and coming away with a win is no small task, especially as Texas deals with its own penchant to give up the long ball.
Now as they enter the postseason, all of their pre-season goals still are ahead of them, the road may be tougher.
The Longhorns also brought home another team championship, as well as two individual championships, home to Austin over the weekend. The championships started with the rowing team repeating as champions in dominant fashion, beating rival Stanford by 15 seconds to claim the title. Then the doubles tennis pair of Richard Ciamarra and Cleve Harper snagged the men's doubles title, while Peyton Stearns brought home the trophy for women's singles.

  • Longhorn Republic: May 23, 2022 - Tennis Natty and a Baseball Sweep
The Texas Longhorns women's tennis team ran a gauntlet of three top-5 teams this weekend to clinch their second-consecutive national championship. What makes it even sweeter is that they got revenge on the team that knocked them out of the indoor national championship tournament, the Oklahoma Sooners. That not only puts another trophy in the hall of fame, but gives Texas another big win toward its quest to repeat as the Director's Cup champions.
It was also a big weekend on the diamond, as both the baseball and softball teams took care of their respective business.
For baseball, the Longhorns are on a quest to improve their seeding and to position for the postseason and polished off an undefeated final week with a sweep of the Kansas Jayhawks thanks to another stunning offensive weekend. The softball team went on the road as an underdog and knocked off the Washington Huskies in dramatic fashion, keeping the Huskies from advancing as a host for the first time in school history.

  • Longhorn Republic: May 17, 2022 - A Championship Weekend
The Texas Longhorns took to the field this weekend and came home with three conference championships, both track and field teams, as well as the rowing team, continued a record of dominance dating back years with their respective championships.
The track and field teams now have claimed 11 indoor and outdoor championships in the four years under coach Edrick Floreal, while shattering records at essentially every meet they've attended this year. Texas also put the boats in the water and swept the Big 12 rowing championships, bringing home their seventh-consecutive conference championship.
We also take a look at where the baseball team currently stands with just one week left to go in the Big 12 regular season, as all of the top teams jockey for position heading into the conference tournament.

  • Longhorn Republic: May 12, 2022 - Developing Quarterbacks
For the second year in a row, the Texas Longhorns have a quarterback battle on their hands.
Sophomore quarterback Hudson Card is locked in a battle with Quinn Ewers, who took a long and winding path to end up at Texas after earning one of the highest evaluations of a high school quarterback of all time. Card, no slouch of his own, was the No. 59 player in the country a few cycles ago, meaning Steve Sarkisian has two highly-talented quarterbacks to develop and choose from.
Sarkisian is known as one of the elite quarterback recruiters in college football, having coached six first-round draft picks and two Heisman winners in his time as a quarterback coach, offensive coordinator, and head coach prior to his time at Texas. He now has another opportunity to mold two elite-level talents, needing whichever one he chooses to lead his offense to reach their ceiling quickly for both his sake and the sake of the program overall. Their success, or lack thereof, in 2022 could set the trajectory for the remaining years of the Steve Sarkisian era at Texas.
