  • Longhorn Republic: May 9, 2022 - Baseball's Nearly Perfect Week
After getting swept by the Oklahoma State Cowboys, the Texas Longhorns' baseball team needed to rebound in a major way. They roared back and run-ruled Houston Baptist and appeared to be cruising after a big doubleheader sweep of the West Virginia Mountaineers. Texas narrowly missed a perfect week thanks to yet another bullpen meltdown, blowing a lead in the sixth inning. What can we take away from the successful performances and how can Texas try to mask the bullpen deficiency with just one week left in the regular season?
We also dive in on a successful week of tennis from the men and the women as they start their march in the NCAA tournament, the softball getting hot at the right time, and the women's golf team's strong opening round in the NCAA tournament.

  • May 5, 2022 - The Changing Landscape of College Football
College football is currently changing and this week the Texas Longhorns were at the center of the conversation, and controversy, around the changes. With the combination of the one-time transfer rule and players now having the ability to capitalize on their name, image, and likeness, there is a financial side to the roster management in high-level college football. Reportedly, Xavier Worthy and Jhadae Barron were courted by NIL money to different destinations, before both ultimately making the choice to stay.
While the NCAA tries to put the toothpaste back in the tube, players and fans are weighing in on the new landscape of college football. So what does this mean for the future of college football and how can the Texas Longhorns position themselves to continue their trek back to relevance nationally?

  • Longhorn Republic: May 2, 2022 - A Tough Weekend on the Forty Acres
The Texas Longhorns came into the weekend with a lot at stake, but the bullpen struggles continued for the baseball team and were swept by the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Not only does that mark the first time since the start of conference play that Texas was swept, but it also locked in Oklahoma State as the regular season Big 12 champion with one week of conference play left. How did this season go off the rails so wildly and what, if anything, can Texas do to salvage it?
We also dive in on the Texas portal news, before spending time celebrating the big wins from the softball team, as well as the top-ranked rowing and track and field teams. We spend some time discussing the current landscape of both the Texas Longhorn football team and college football as a whole when we Down the Forty.

  • Longhorn Republic: April 27, 2022 - Basketball Commitments and Football Players as Wrestlers
During our annual summer preview podcasts, we always try to have a bit of fun, so we wanted to get started early and bring back one of our favorite questions: What Texas Longhorn player, past or present, would make a great professional wrestler? Kyle and Gerald dive in on recent history and mine who would make a great entertainer in the squared circle?
We also dive in on what both basketball teams are doing to make a return trip to the NCAA tournament in an effort to improve on this season's results. For the men, we dive in on Marcus Carr's return means to Texas and how he specifically can boost what Chris Beard will do in Year 2. Finally, we look at the latest additions for Coach Vic Schaefer's team, with the hopes Texas can improve on its record of back-to-back Elite 8's.

  • Longhorn Republic: April 26, 2022 - Diving in on Spring Themes
The Texas Longhorns took to the field for the final time of the spring in an unorthodox spring game but giving fans a showcase of what may come in the fall. Fans got their first look at quarterback Quinn Ewers and the new offensive weapons, while Hudson Card flashed in the scrimmage as well. So what, if anything can we take away from the showcase and how does that spin storylines as we head into next football season.
We also dive in on a dominant performance from the baseball team, showing off both offensive prowess and a solid outing from the pitching staff to secure the series sweep. In Down the Forty, we look at the two conference championships Texas brought home over the weekend and try to figure out where things went wrong for the softball team.

  • Longhorn Republic: April 20, 2022 - Texas Adds Agiye Hall
The Texas Longhorns went looking in the transfer portal for another offensive weapon and came away with former top-50 recruit Agiye Hall. The talented wideout was recruited by Jeff Banks when he was with the Alabama Crimson Tide, but did not make a big impact in Tuscaloosa and decided to try a new location. What does Hall bring to a wide receiver room that was in need of more playmakers? What will the room look like when fall camp rolls around?
We also dive in on the comings and goings in the transfer portal for the basketball team, some 2021 players, and some who are still undecided to unpack how they will impact Chris Beard's squad moving forward. What will Texas look like with more athleticism and explosiveness on the court?

  • Longhorn Republic: April 19, 2022 - Baseball Woes Continue
The Texas Longhorns had an opportunity to move up in the conference standings but couldn't take advantage of it and dropped the series to the Kansas State Wildcats, who had won just one conference game heading into the matchup. Texas looked like it was ready to cruise Thursday, but blew a big lead before getting run off of the diamond on Friday. Thankfully for fans, the Longhorns avoided the sweep with a solid pitching performance from Lucas Gordon on Saturday.
In Down the Forty, the men's golf team was back on the course and won their second-straight tournament, a final tune-up before the Big 12 tournament, while the softball team ended OU's 40-game win streak, and both the men's and women's teams continue their hot play as the regular season winds down.

  • Longhorn Republic: April 14, 2022 - Diving in on the Director's Cup
The Texas Longhorns took home the Director's Cup a year ago for the top athletic department in the country, thanks, in part, to a strong performance from the winter and spring sports. As Texas heads into another spring season with an opportunity to take a shot at another crown for the top athletic department in the country.
After two national championships in indoor track and field, a pair of runner-up finishes in swimming and diving, and runs to the Elite 8 in volleyball and women's basketball, Texas currently sits in fifth place in the standings, but is better positioned to make a run at the title in the spring. We welcome to the podcast Brett Wilkinson, a self-made expert in the Director's Cup, to help us understand the history behind the Longhorns' strong showing in the last several years and why he thinks Texas has a shot at the top spot once again.

  • Longhorn Republic: April 12, 2022 - Spring Practice Updates and TCU Baseball
The Texas Longhorns had a scare over the weekend, taking on the TCU Horned Frogs, but thanks to solid Sunday pitching and seven runs they managed to take the weekend series. After a complete-game shutout on Friday, the pitching slumped yet again Saturday, before finally making the rebound, but what is at the root of the inconsistency? Can Texas figure it out by Big 12 play to set themselves up for a deep run in the postseason?
We also dive in on the most recent reports out of the football team's spring practice and what it means for our expectations for the spring game and beyond. How is the offense shaking up and what do we want to see when Texas takes the field in a few weeks to close the year?

  • Longhorn Republic: April 5, 2022 - Baseball Tops OU
The Texas Longhorns needed some wins in a bad way on the baseball diamond and managed to do that in dramatic fashion, taking a 2-1 series win over the Oklahoma Sooners. After splitting the Friday and Saturday matchups, Texas fell behind 7-1 in the rubber match but scored 11 unanswered runs to take a lead and the series. The Texas pitching got back on track Friday, but the bullpen yet again let them down on Saturday and Sunday, so what can Texas do moving forward to keep the ship afloat?
The winning wasn't just contained to the baseball diamond, the softball, track, and golf teams were all in action this weekend -- and all brought home wins in their competition.
We also discuss the new NIL opportunities through OpenDorse, as well as the latest commitment to the 2023 recruiting class.
