We all have a window of tolerance for what we are willing to feel before we go into contraction and block ourselves from going any further. This happens for both ends of the spectrum. We have a window of tolerance for how much suffering we will endure and how much happiness and joy and pleasure we allow ourselves to feel as well. In this episode I'm going to share with you how I personally learned to go beyond my edges when I thought I just couldn't handle feeling more.

Toxic Productivity is an easy trap to get caught in. Our society has placed high value on outputs and outcomes and the pressure is high to always have something to show for your time spent. Productivity in and of itself is neutral. However, when we become obsessive and use the focus on outcomes to drive our life it robs us of the gift of living in the present. I am diving into one of the most challenging parts of being a modern human. How much do you care about what other people think of you?
Often times our fears about other people's opinions are the very thing that keep us from making change, from speaking up, from doing the thing we know deep down we need to do, or even pursing our own dreams. If we get trapped in people pleasing and abandoning our own sense of self at the risk of not being liked, long term the results are far worse than they would have been otherwise. I'm sharing my own journey with this ongoing fear and how caring less about others opinions has actually helped me build the skill of trusting myself more and more.

Typically in social settings we tend to ask the same questions of each other.

How are you?

What's going on in your life?

Or if it's someone you haven't met before, perhaps questions like, Where are you from? What do you do for a living? Do you have children? Are you married?

While these questions are still important insights into someone's life, I was recently asked a casual question at a dinner that I haven't been able to stop thinking about for more than a month. It stopped me in my tracks and made my heart beat fast. I've never been asked this question before so I didn't have a practiced response, and perhaps that is why it was so impactful. I had to really really search within myself for an answer, and to be honest, that search is still happening. And the search to this single question has added so much meaning to my life. I'm excited to ask you the same.

Have you ever felt like you were walking on eggshells in a relationship? We all know the feeling... we don't want to rock the boat and create chaos and drama, but we also doubt the possibility of experiencing authentic joy here as well because something is being suppressed. It's the elephant in the room that keeps us from feeling free to just be ourself. So we play safe. We play small. We make sure we don't tip into the direction of getting triggered, but we also aren't free to tip in the direction of play and joy. We have a very small range of what is tolerable. While we may fool ourselves into thinking this is what it takes to keep things "good" in the relationship, this narrow range is more like a prison than a safe zone. And it's not just our relationship with others that can operate here, but also our relationship with ourself. Yes, you can walk on eggshells with yourself! In this episode we are going to talk about how to expand our range of emotion, because life is so much richer when we can open up the range of what can be felt and experienced.

Have you ever felt divided inside yourself? Perhaps there's part of you who really wants to do something and part of you who doesn't. Or part of you that feels sad regarding an ending and part of you that is relieved. Maybe there's a part of you that still longs for a certain dream or a part of you that still carries the burden of a criticism you received a long time ago. We often described our complex feelings using this language... "Part of me feels (fill in the blank)." In this episode we're going to address our many different parts, and how this concept can help us to more fully understand our emotions and triggers they might bring. Most importantly of all, is the invitation we all have to love these different parts of who we are. Even those parts that annoy us or that we would rather reject. We're going to learn how to talk to those parts with love and understanding so we can move into wholeness instead of staying divided in fractal parts inside.

No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma & Restoring Wholeness with The Internal Family Systems Model by Richard Schwartz

Have you ever had the hope in your life that someday you would arrive at a point of spiritual maturity where you no were longer triggered by anything? You were no longer triggered by your spouse, or your kids, or your parents, or your co workers, or that really annoying person in your life, or maybe even no longer triggered by your own self? 

I have had this wish for most of my life! I think I have imagined that someday there would hopefully be some epic moment of arrival where I was eternally happy and unaffected by emotional challenges because I'd finally figured out how to master the game of life and had transcended it. If reaching that arrival is even possible, I am still a long ways out, and more so, I don't know that I have ever met anyone who has ever arrived at perfect peace and stayed there forever afterwards no matter what. All the people I know still get off balance...some are better than others at responding to those moments, but I don't know anyone who is no longer triggered by anything. With that said, I think talking about the nature of trigger and response is a worthwhile conversation. Perhaps if we understood some of the mechanics of what happens when we're triggered we can in the very least, get better at responding.

Human emotion needs expression not suppression. Yes, that means how to express anger, rage, disappointment, grief, sadness, jealousy, and more. Sometimes feeling our feelings in silence and just being an observer is enough. And other times, those emotions need a bit more drama in allowing ourselves to feel with our whole entire body and not just noticing them with our mind. Buckle up. I'm going to get really human in this episode.

This is part 3 in a series I'm calling "Reclamation of Feeling". In this episode we're talking about spiritual bypassing. This was a term I've only learned in the last few years but I have experienced this emotional block my entire life, as I'm sure you have as well. Knowing what it is and what it looks like has been a key piece in learning how to regulate my emotions and move through things with more love and compassion. If you've ever tried to change how you feel by doing spiritual tools, if you've ever tried to just be more positive and optimistic, if you've ever tried to just look on the bright side or be more grateful and sometimes experienced that these things didn't help you feel better, this episode will explain why that can happen. You'll be able to spot where you do this to yourself, and perhaps when you might project this onto others in effort to fix emotions we judge as wrong or bad. What if there isn't actually anything to fix? What if there's just things that need to be felt? This approach can make all the difference.
