What happens when you love the work, but not the practice? This comes up frequently for Physicians who want to spend more time with their patient, but struggle with the requirements of the insurance companies and the churn of traditional outpatient practices. Today my guest is Dr Katrice Brooks, and she shares how she decided to walk away from her employed position to build a Direct Primary Care practice that allowed her to do the work she wanted to do, in the way that she wanted to do it.

Dr Katrice Brooks is a Double board-certified Physician in Family and Lifestyle Medicine, with over 10 years of experience in Primary Care after completing her medical training at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, followed by residency at West Surburban Family Medicine Residency in Oak Park. She values spending time with her patients, and connecting with them in order to provide whole-person care. She is passionate about health equality and patient autonomy, as well as improving lives by reducing medication burden. In 2021 she founded Quench Clinic Fitness and Spa, a wellness center to accomplish this serving Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the Chicagoland area. The DPC offers a virtual gym to patients, and Dr. Brooks offers medical aesthetics with a passion for making darker skin glow.

  • Stop Shoulding on Yourself

    Send us Fan Mail

My kids *should* be in school.
    The park *should* be open.
    I *should* be working.

Should, should, should. As someone who is trying to build her anti-shoulding muscles, this week has been a challenge! In today's episode, I talk about shoulding on yourself and other people and how this blocks us from being present and having the bandwidth to navigate challenges. Oh, and also, I nerd out on some favorite movies from my childhood, so there's that too (should I even mention that? Eek, there we go again!).

    Should you listen? Yes!

  • Quitting Doesn't Have to be the Answer with special guest, Dr Mary Leung

    Send us Fan Mail

So many of us have fantasized about quitting medicine, or leaving our current position, convinced that we will feel better. My guest today, Dr Mary Leung is an employed Hematology/Oncology Physician who believed this too for many years, but didn't want to leave the life she had outside of medicine, and so felt stuck. Until she found coaching that is. Through coaching, she was able to see how her thoughts were influencing her experience, and by using the tools she learned, she was able to become not only more efficient at her work, saving her precious time, but she was more effective, more present in her life, inside and outside of the exam room. She now shares these tools with other Physicians, and we talk today about how coaching can help us get unstuck.

Dr Leung practices in Long Island, NY as a employed Physician, and is board-certified in Hematology and Medical Oncology. She studied at the University of Buffalo, and is originally from Hong Kong. She has her own Physician Coaching Business outside of her medical work, and loves spending time on the beach, and pursuing her love of desserts!

  • Is it Quiet Quitting?

    Send us Fan Mail

Today we are talking about a term that started on TikTok, called "Quiet Quitting." And yes, I had to look up what it meant, and who started it, and no, I'm not on TikTok, but I digress. I want to approach the conversation though from the perspective of "is it quiet quitting, or is it setting boundaries and valuing yourself?" Because these two things are different. And I think many of us may have had the experience of saying "to hell with it!" and throwing our hands up in despair during periods of burnout, and perhaps cutting down on our work in some way. But in my experience, we don't succeed with actually doing less, and often end up feeling guilty and lazy, rather than relaxed and balanced. So let's dive in and discuss, shall we?

Should out my friend Lynne for enthusiastically selecting this topic from a few I posed to her! If there is something you want to hear more about, drop me a line at [email protected]. I'd love to hear what matters to you, what you struggle with, and what you are thinking about because I can guarantee you are not alone!

  • Questioning Your Own Thoughts

    Send us Fan Mail

I don't care how smart you are, sometimes your thoughts are not correct, not helpful, and/or not kind. Sometimes our brains are jerks. In this episode, we talk about why this happens, and a simple practice that helps you to start being more aware of your thoughts, so that you can decide whether or not you, the driver of your body and higher level thinking, will choose to believe each thought that happens to pass by.

If you are interested in getting on the wait list for my upcoming program, "Healing Perfectionism in Physicians," please click this link, and I will be in touch soon. In this dynamic program, we work in a small community of like-minded Physicians on better understanding our thought patterns and behaviors, and learning to make choices that are more in alignment with our authentic selves. Think less perfectionism, scarcity, and self-judgment, and more calm, creativity and self-compassion. The program starts up again in September, and I would be honored if you would join us!
