We're going deep in this episode. When was the last time you felt like you belonged? For many of us in medicine, this can feel like a challenge, and there are clear reasons why we feel this way. We talk through ideas of belonging and fitting in, as described by Brené Brown in her wonderful book, The Gifts of Imperfection.
To learn more about my upcoming program, where we dig into The Gifts of Imperfection, head to my website at www.healthierforgood.com/upcoming-events. The doors for this round will close May 10th, 2022, and spots are limited.

March 30 marks National Doctor's Day (as well as National Something on a Stick Day!), and March 25-31 is National Physician's Week. These are generally occasions that are "celebrated" with swag (mugs, paperweights and scarves, oh my!), and/or pizza or doughnuts, perhaps a card or an email. And how many of us turn these gestures into weapons, resenting them as signs of our (low) value? The only ones who really lose here, are us.
In this episode, I share a way to start to change this for ourselves, to start to choose to feel differently about these kinds of gestures, as well as little gifts from patients.
And hey, if you want a party, plan yourself and your Physician friends a party! Why not?

In this episode, we talk about how it isn't time that is the enemy (we all have the same 24 hours after all), but it's the number of things that we need/"should"/want to do with our time that is the problem. And when we carry this list with us, stuck in our heads, we endlessly "should" on ourselves, making it very difficult to relax during the actual time off (weekend, day off, vacation, etc).

A recent article by Dr. Chelsea Turgeon in KevinMD highlighted learned helplessness as a major harmful side effect of our training. We were trained to tune out the needs of our bodies and minds during medical school and residency, and we get so good at tuning ourselves out that we keep doing it; often until we can't anymore.
Check out the article here.

It may seem obvious, but the Pandemic delivered some unseen "extras" in terms of challenges for Physicians. The politicization of masking for example. The pressure to convince fiercely skeptical people to get vaccinated. The increased risks to our own health and safety and that of our loved ones. If you've been struggling, it makes total sense. But we can only move on if we can recognize where we are getting stuck.
