  • Money and Mindset with special guest, Dr Jimmy Turner, aka The Physician Philosopher

    Send us Fan Mail

Many Physicians are familiar with the idea of the "golden handcuffs," even if they haven't heard the term. It's the belief that we are trapped in THIS job, or THIS career and we can't move/leave/change/innovate because we have loans to repay, mortgages, etc. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr Jimmy Turner, aka the Physician Philosopher, and we dig into these beliefs about money and our careers, and how they contribute to burnout.

Dr Jimmy Turner is a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist specializing in regional anesthesia and acute pain management at Wake Forest, where he also trained for his medical school, residency and fellowships. He is also a published author, podcaster and certified coach for burned-out doctors who want to master their money mindsets in order to live life on their own terms. In his free time he enjoys time with his wife and 3 children, playing pickleball, and driving fast cars.

    Check out his work here:

Jimmy's new book will be available July 2022: Determined: How Burned-Out Doctors Can Thrive in a Broken Medical System

  • How Do You Play?

    Send us Fan Mail

Today we are talking about play and playfulness, and the role of fun in our lives. The nature of our work, the high level of responsibility we carry, and the time we spend working can all contribute to NOT prioritizing fun. We may rationalize that we don't have time for fun, we have to work. And yet, Dr Stuart Brown, Psychiatrist and the founder of the National Institute of Play, says "The opposite of fun is not work. The opposite of fun is depression."

So how do you put more fun into your life? Listen and find out. Oh, and also, see how play and rest are inextricably linked according to another Dr Brown, Brené Brown, PhD LMSW, my favorite Researcher-Storyteller as she outlines in her book, The Gifts of Imperfection."

  • What Acceptance IS, and is NOT

    Send us Fan Mail

Today we are talking about acceptance vs resistance. Recent news events, as well as conversations with my clients about what is happening in medicine has me thinking how easy it is to live in resistance to things going on. It's easy, but feels horrible. If you find yourself frequently gritting your teeth, going off on "shoulds" and "shouldn'ts" in your life, you're going to want to tune in to this one.

  • Sunday Afternoon Scaries Or Why That Trip to Target Won't Really Help

    Send us Fan Mail

What happens for you the night before work after a break (weekend, day off, vacation, etc)? Do you check your schedule or the hospital census? Do you find yourself craving sugar or staying up to late binging on a show? For me, I had an intense urge to treat myself to a Target run, often with a mocha. I was aware of the urge, and I gave into it nearly every time, but for a long time I never really dug into why it was happening or what I could do about it.

And then someone shared the phrase "Sunday Afternoon Scaries," and then I understood.

Listen in to learn more about how this shows up for different people, and what you can choose to do about it.

And if you want help with your Sunday Afternoon Scaries, schedule your free mini-session with me today at www.healthierforgood.com/work-with-me. We can work on getting you back to enjoying your rest time, and even on making your work week an event you don't have to dread.

  • How to Become Toxic: A Masterclass

    Send us Fan Mail

Deep breath. We're talking today about what happens when you have been labeled "toxic" at work. And we start right off with my true confessions. I personally think it's easy to pick up the label (I might be biased here!), but it's also important to note that there is a solution that doesn't involve burning all your bridges.

In the show, I reference Brené Brown's amazing book, Rising Strong, where she discusses the relationship between boundaries, integrity, and generosity. It's a book I read when I was deep in burnout, and to be honest, I had to put it down every few pages, but it changed my life, albeit slowly, as I started to incorporate the ideas.

I also want to link to Dr Sarah Smith's upcoming Masterclass, "Stop Charting at Night," happening Saturday, May 28th. If you miss this one,  follow her on Instagram @charting coach so that you can catch the next one:  https://www.chartingcoach.ca/masterclasses

And finally, set up a call with me if you have been labeled "toxic," and you want it to stop. We'll work together to have you feeling better, so that you can show up as yourself, who is not actually toxic. To set up the free call, click here: https://www.healthierforgood.com/work-with-me
