With sentiment decidedly dour, what is needed is good news, which could come from Fed Chair Jerome Powell in his remarks to Congress today and tomorrow. If he cites geopolitical risks as grounds for softening the Fed's stance on interest rates, that could provide markets a lift. A more hawkish stance could send stocks lower. This is why Bonds have been performing well, lately. The Atlanta Fed reports GDP growth at 0.0%; crude oil prices continue to rise, and the Russian aggression against Ukraine continues. (3/1/22) Markets are opening lower over concerns about Russia, but the VIX is telling a slightly different story: Remember when we shut down the economy in March 2020?? Runaway volatility was based on uncertainty seeded by the COVID epidemic. Most recently, despite the 10% market correction over the last two months, concerns and sell-offs over the Fed's hiking of interest rates, liquidity, and the Russian invasion, volatility has risen only mildly. However, markets are over-sold, sentiment remains negative, this typically leads to a short-term bottoming, and subsequent market rally. In fact, markets have held up pretty well, considering everything that's been going on. There are more stocks at 52-week lows than at any period over the last 30-years. The ratio of smart money vs dumb money is at levels that are consistent with a short-term market-bottom. A reflexive rally on ANY type of positive news would not be surprising this month...providing an opportunity to rebalance risk as we head into the rest of the year. (2/24/22) Markets will open sharply lower following the overnight invasion of Ukraine by Russia. In anticipation, markets closed lower Wednesday (2/23), right on support set back in October 2021. How much more is there to go? We look to markets' previous responses for clues. Russia invaded Ukraine over a disagreement about Crimea in 2014. Markets then responded with the understanding there would be a resolution to the conflict in short order. That was then, this is now--and it's unknown how long today's conflict might stretch out. Markets in 2014 were set up similarly, with market peaks set in early January, to the tune of 3 standard deviations below the 50-DMA--exactly where we'll be this morning at the opening bell. The key today is to not overreact to what you're seeing on TV. Increased geopolitical risk will also cause the Fed to rethink its monetary strategy, pausing rate hikes and balance sheet reduction. That could create additional support for stocks. (2/23/22) Markets dip into correction territory, thanks to pressures from slowing earnings growth, higher inflation, the Federal Reserve, and Russian headlines. Markets Tuesday did hold support at January's lows, and should actually be positioned to rally, thanks to very negative, bullish sentiment across the board. As markets re-test support, they're over-sold on all levels, and we're looking for a reflexive rally back to the previous downtrend. Use this rally to reduce potential risk in portfolios, rebalance positions, and look to add hedges, if needed. We're not out of the woods, yet, in terms of risk: In addition to the Russia-Ukraine issue, there's another Fed meeting coming in three weeks, with the possibility of a rate hike on the table. After the past two months of negative bias, it is possible we'll see a month or two of markets with a positive structure.
