Markets have been in an interesting, up/down, up/down pattern over the past week and a half, stair-stepping through a recovery rally, and now again approaching new all-time highs. Relative strength continues to moderate, and momentum remains in a weakening trend. Money flows are weak, as well. So while the recent rally has been good, it has been on very narrow breadth. In fact, yesterday's NASDAQ rally only included 48% of the index members (the lowest on record). This has not been a hallmark, bull market rally, and because of its inherent weakness, any data coming out over the next few weeks has the potential to cause yet another decline or correction. This is a rally in which you want to be managing risk very carefully. Markets are doing okay despite their correction a week ago, which revealed a pullback in relative strength. Markets subsequently stair-stepped their way back up to tease new, all-time highs. Do not rule out the presence of seasonality, however. The thing to watch is the deterioration of money flows; even though markets are going up, the underlying money flows are continuing to weaken. Are money flows about to turn positive? It's the wrong time of the year for that. Market is actually set up more for correction. Markets continue to hover around the 20-DMA. There is a negative divergence between momentum and the market rally, with buying participation and money flows being very weak. Retail "dip-buyers" continue to step in to nibble at every dip in the market. Markets will again provide clearance above the 20-DMA, which will validate the test of that level. Relative strength is beginning to recover from Friday's sell off. Just because we had a one-day sell off does not necessarily mean the correction is over; be cautious in your risk taking. There is no sign of concern for a correction; portfolio insurance in the form of Puts is very, very cheap now. That is a good contrarian indicator that risk still exists in the market. Technical Analysis is a good way of seeing what the herd is thinking; it's a representation of market psychology. Those who characterize technical analysis as "voodoo" actually take the rules a little too literally. We suggest using stop loss levels as a measure, and when those stops are triggered, either pay attention to find a bounce to sell into, or that stock will confirm support from a previous level. Why is this relevant? We violated the 20-DMA this week. That does not necessarily mean we're going into a bigger correction; the violation WAS a warning sign that markets COULD work their way lower. This is where PATIENCE is important in using technical analysis. IF markets stay below the 20-DMA thru Friday, that's a confirmation of the break. If markets close above this level on Friday, then the break below was just a violation; if they close BELOW that level, it's a confirmation of the break, and a key to watch for markets to go lower towards the 50-DMA. Palantir knocked the cover off the ball with last night's earnings report, but since the company is not as large as, say, Apple, Google, or Meta, that's not going to provide quite as much lift to the markets. Following two sell-offs Thursday and Friday, markets on Monday executed a nice one-percent move to the upside, making for TWO one-percent moves in two days to reclaim the 20-DMA. The issue now is whether markets can hold onto the gains and stay above that level for the remainder of the week. Such would also remove the risk of markets further dipping to the 50-DMA. Relative Strength also saw a decent bounce on Monday. However...pay attention to what's happening, because risk DOES still remain.
