Nobody wants the dollar? Is it really the end of the word as we know it?? While the Dollar has certainly had a decline, going from 110 to 99 on the US Dollar Index. However, things must be placed properly in context: Looking at a 20-yar chart, it is clear that the Dollar is NOT declining, despite recent, short term dips. The Dollar has basically been consolidating ever since 2022. Yes, the Dollar could go lower from here; 91 on the Index is certainly possible in a retest of a long term moving average. But that would still be well within the bullish trend. What we're witnessing now is not surprising, given the dynamics imposed by the tariffs. Currency is basically nothing but a measure of international trade, and most countries store their reserve assets in US Dollars by buying US Treasuries, gold, or US stocks. Countries concerned about the impact of tariffs on their economy are pulling their reserve assets out of dollars and back into their own currencies. That's the rotation that's been going on. Markets sold off sharply last week on a higher than expected tariff rate on China and other countries; now, we have had a "repeal" of those tariffs and a corresponding relief rally. That action wiped out most of the losses incurred by tariff news, and markets climbed back up to the bottom of the previous trading range. This morning we are getting close to triggering a buy signal; markets have room to recover as the tariff threat is eased. The question now is whether tariffs will even return, or just remain as is. Markets had their largest gain, 9%, since WW-2, reversing all losses since Monday and the tariff announcemets last week. Unfrotunately, we're likely not done with market corrections. Markets rallied 4% Tuesday morning on false hopes of a 90-day delay in tariff impositions, then reverse course and gave up all the gains, finishing in the red. There as good news in that markets did not take out previous lows. Markets are now trying to form support at the 61.8% retracement level. Markets are deeply over sold.Markets remain under pressure as the turmoil continuies. There is a lot of panic selling, partcularly in ETF's, which only exacerbates the sell off. Bond yields have been rising sharply as a function of the Basis Trade, which looks like we're getting liquidation evens in hedge funds, and mmargin calls, as well. The jump in yields doesn't have anything to do with inflation or tariffs; this is a functino of market instability. We suspect, if the basis trade doesn't settle down, the Fed will be forced to intervene on some level to stabilize financial markets. Monday's market action was quite interesting, down 4% at the open and rallying back 5% within minutes of the opening bell, thanks to a piece of news on Reuters that tariffs would be paused for 90-days (untrue). Why is this important? It shows just how over sold the market is, and looking for any piece of good news to rally. Even when it's false. If you look at a weekly chart going back a decade, and site the 200-week moving average, whenever the market has come down to this level, it has sharply rebounded. Markets are now approaching that bottom, and we're due for a decent rally. That will be the event upon which you will want to re-balance your portfolio, take some profits, and raise some cash.
