Today’s podcast is a heavily requested topic I get asked about frequently. What is the best approach to flexibility? I summarize five of the biggest mistakes that I used to make as a coach and what I do differently now based on all the things that I've read, learned, and people I've worked with. I break down exactly what the research says about how many days you should stretch, the most effective exercises to do, make things stick long term, make flexibility training more effective saving time and effort, but also keep it as safe as possible.
I DISCUSS; Why consistency not intensity is key.
Which type of stretching is the best.
What is the most effective dosage for stretching?
The importance of eccentric strength training for flexibility.
And…
Does stretching change muscle length over time or does it change our tolerance to stretch?
If you are interested in flexibility training, we have put this podcast out in conjunction with a huge course launch that we've been working on,
The Gymnastic Flexibility Blueprint
…is your one-stop shop for everything I've ever thought about with flexibility in terms of what does the research says made into in an easy to follow summary to help build your own programs:

Today on the podcast I’m very excited to share another thought-provoking and important conversation about cultural change, morals, and ethics of coaching with Tom Elder. With 13 years of experience coaching, he also has an extensive education in Philosophy with his research focused on child autonomy in abuse in youth sports, which is obviously a very important topic that we're dealing with right now in gymnastics. Once again he had my brain turning talking about gymnastics culture, the things that we have grown to accept in our sport, philosophies, coaching techniques. We explored the negative impact these can have on athletes if we allow some of these things to continue.
This might be a tough episode to listen to if you're someone who's going through this yourself, or has a history with someone who maybe has, unfortunately, experienced harmful behaviors.
“I hope that if I could achieve one thing from this podcast, I can get one person who's struggling with this, to feel like and realize they're not alone. And they have the whole backing of the community. We're all supporting them. But there's going to be some tough roads for people to go down if the sports really going to get better. And we need brave and courageous people who are willing to lead the way and are willing to take that for themselves so that the community itself gets a little bit stronger.” Tom Elder

Today is episode 150 of The Shift Show! A big thank you to all the listeners for your continued support. Who better to have on our 150 episode than my good friend, Nick Ruddock a high-performance consultant who has worked with over 22 nations around the world from club level all the way up to the Olympic level. In the gymnastics community right now there is a lot of people who are frustrated with the technical aspect of gymnastics and they feel as though the athletes they work with aren't making progress, that things aren't really working. Nick has been grateful enough to come on and share what he has learned from his experience working with high-performing clubs. Which he has broken down into 8 essential tips that any level coach across the world can use to get better technical performance of your gymnasts, making sure that you’re getting the most out of each practice and making progress.
We DISCUSS; How to increase the intensity of training and the work ethic of the athletes and coaches.
The importance of not rushing to fulfill gymnasts' long-term potential.
Why you should prioritize the simple things.
Those that learn the most, do the most in gymnastics.
Nick’s brand new must-have Gymnastics App!
Nick has just launched a ridiculously amazing, new Gymnastics Growth App with everything you could possibly need in one place, including an exercise library with floor drills, bar drills, and line drills.

This week on the podcast is part three of the four-part series on how to get the most success out of the competitive year in gymnastics. Firstly we explored the foundational concepts, then last week we used them to break down the Pre Season and program for success. This week we move on to how to optimize our athletes training for the In-Season to hit meets, progress towards goals, and can mentally, physically, and emotionally handle the long demanding season. During the In-Season we're not trying to go crazy and build strength or an engine in our gymnast, with the latest research and my experiences with phenomenal coaches I’ll share the strength conditioning, cardio system, and maintenance care work you should be doing.
I DISCUSS; The main goals of In Season.
Yearly planning and how to peak at the right time.
What strength and conditioning should look like In Season and example workouts.
When and how do you deload sessions.
Have your athlete got a wellness journal?

Today on the podcast is part two of the four-part series on how to get the most success out of the competitive year in gymnastics. In the first lecture, I discussed the foundational concepts of the competitive year. In this episode, we deep dive how to approach the preseason. How do we get ready for skills? Turn those skills into combinations? What workouts can we do to help build routine endurance and build mental confidence to help get ready for the meet season? I talk about strength conditioning and how to turn the strength gains from the offseason into explosive power that will show up in routines. Sharing important research, some of my favorite workouts, programs, and templates that I've used successfully with my own gymnasts but also Club, College, and Elite teams I have consulted with around the world.
I DISCUSS; the main goals of a preseason.
The best cardio routines you should be doing to get your athletes ready for harder routines.
What you can do in the preseason to really prepare athletes physically, mentally, and emotionally.
The hourglass analogy.
