This week we have a special bonus episode of the Shift Show. We interviewed former and current coaches and gymnasts as part of our Short Film Series on the future of gymnastic strength conditioning.
With overwhelming scientific support for performance benefits, injury risk reduction, mental/emotional health benefits, and reduced risk of athlete burnout, when properly used it is a tool that could completely revolutionize the sport of gymnastics.
Our brand new Peak Gymnastics Power course launched this week and the concepts in this podcast are exactly what we talk about in the course. If you want to learn exactly how I make strength coaching programs for gymnastics, what exercises, how we do them, how many sets and reps, and how to coach proper form to get explosive power out of your gymnasts.
Jump on now because on Sunday the price increases and we don’t want you to miss out on being the lucky winner who will receive a free consult with us!

Today on the podcast a second quick appearance, due to popular demand, my friend and co-worker from Champion Physical Therapy and Performance Diwesh Poudyal. Head of Strength and Conditioning and Director of Fitness working with athletes every day, single-handedly programming for all the NCAA gymnasts, Division One to Three, and Elite Gymnasts that we work with at our facility and have high level, national team, and Olympic caliber goals. All the way down to athletes who just want to have fun. We're back because the sprinting podcast was super popular and we've been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to develop some resources that people I think are gonna be very excited to learn from and dispelling some of these myths about gymnast lifting weights.
We DISCUSS why strength training is SO beneficial and the performance benefits you will get if you sprinkle it into your offseason.
At WHAT age should gymnasts start lifting?
WHY having a general fitness base and more movement variability throughout the year helps with injury reduction.
WHAT makes a well-rounded potential athlete? Filling in the gaps of what athletes are not getting in their gymnastics training.
HOW many times should you strength train per week? What goes into a program? What movements do you do? Where do you start!?!
Equipment you should INVEST in when starting strength training on a budget.
ALSO…
HOW to make strength training fun.

Today on the podcast, I'm very excited to be joined by Lindsey Stancil, a high-level coach in the Pennsylvania area. She's been professional and grateful enough to share some alternative points of view on some pretty controversial and complex topics. Being a higher level coach she has a different perspective to me, a middle-level coach, and medical provider. Lindsey points out there are great coaches out there who are doing an awesome job but are being asked to perform 17 different roles. They're trying to be strength coaches, physiologists, managing recovery, and nutrition.
We DISCUSS training hours, HOW making recommendations or mandates too soon without talking them through can have negative consequences on kid's dreams.
ADVICE to coaches: do you know your purpose and is it easy for you to make the right decisions? The importance of making sure you have a strong mission statement for yourself.
‘You're just a coach, when are you going to get a real job’ EVERYTHING that’s wrong with this statement.
HOW to train those hard skills to young talented 8, 9, 10-year-olds, teaching pace, technique, and developing skills safely.
The PRESSURE of parents.
PRACTICAL advice to coaches or parents who are trying to build a better environment and culture in their gym, helping everyone, not just the kids but coaches as well, be happier with their daily work.
ALSO…
WHY is a 12-year old deciding yourself worth today?

Mike Reiman on Hip Dysplasia/Microinstability Injuries and Finding Success as a Clinician
Today on the podcast I geek out with Duke faculty member & physical therapy researcher, Mike Reinman. One of the most stressful areas for clinicians & coaches is hip injuries, hypermobile, loose gymnast hips. Mike is doing phenomenal work putting out great information on hip dysplasia. We dive into this as it's often not talked about. But there’s a lot of great research now which means better tools to understand how to help athletes.
We DISCUSS why you should be hanging out with surgeons if you want to work with hips.
The DIFFERENCE between Hip dysplasia and or instability.
The IMPORTANCE of mentorship, what it really is, and how to approach someone.
DECIPHERING protocols for hip surgeries.
HOW somebody can be stiff and loose at the same time.
Mike explains THE EPIC RETURN - what to do early on to help with symptoms or build strength.

Today on the podcast, I had a great chat with Rebecca Smith who asked me to come on an Instagram Live and talk about, creating cultures where people can feel safe and progression towards high-level goals. What we're looking at in terms of evolving the culture around competitions and what valuable life lesson are we trying to teach kids, pulling away from ‘it’s only about scores, medals and placements’ and ‘the highlights on Facebook or Instagram.
We DISCUSS the type of culture that allows athletes to be happy and successful.
Is it RIGHT that gyms send out level eights to compete at level five? Is winning at all costs worth it?
If you're EXPECTING that success will bring you happiness, then it never will.
The VALUE of supportive parents and coaches that are unconditional.
HOW to help kids communicate, develop a voice and empower them.
The IMPORTANCE of choice and consent.
