  • How to Support Your Body Coming Off The Pill

I was on different versions of the birth control pill for about 7 years. I reacted horribly to one prescription, but when I talked to my doctor about it, I felt like I wasn't heard. I had to advocate for myself and it worked.

But then, years later, I realized that I didn't have all the information to be a true advocate for my holistic health. Why didn't I have all the information when I was first going on this medication?

So this episode is for anyone who is an advocate and who is supporting someone coming off the pill for any reason.

Here are the main topics of this simplicity bite:

    • Dietary considerations that may help
    • Recommended supplements
    • Science behind chemical bleeds
    • What to expect from the body when it stops getting the pill
    • How to reframe the way we think about the triggers that put us on the pill in the first place

Hoping this episode supports you on the path of knowing, accepting, and loving who you truly are. Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do!

  • Using Keto Principles to Build a Healthy Diet with Stephanie Estima

I am delighted to have a guest on this episode that I had on the show a few weeks back, Dr. Stephanie Estima. Towards the end of episode 135, we started to talk about eating strategies designed specifically for women's health. And I said to her: you know, this feels like another whole conversation. So, here we are, having another whole conversation!

In this episode, we cover fasting, keto, pitfalls that Dr. Stephanie has seen when advising women on their eating habits, and some body science that will help everyone make good choices for their bodies.

Dr. Stephanie Estima is a Chiropractic doctor with a special interest in functional neurology, brain metabolism, and female physiology. She is particularly focused on distilling strategies in nutritional proxies, movement, posture, and mindset to help actualize female potential, healthspan, longevity, and achievement. Dr. Estima is the author of Betty Body and a podcast called Better. Her life's passion and mission is blending modern science with ancient wisdom to empower women's health and healing.

Here are the main topics of this wonderful conversation:

    • How and why keto should be different for women than men
    • Physiological background on how keto works and how diet choices can lead to cravings and abandoning keto
    • Examples of how to incorporate specific foods into a healthy keto plan
    • Any healthy diet is a balance that fits you as an individual
    • A recommended starting point if you're new to keto
    • Incorporate knowledge of your cycle into your diet and exercise plan for maximal benefits
    • How all of these principles apply to menopausal women
    • How Dr. Stephanie approaches fasting

I wish that I could share a smell with your ears because I wore a chocolate Mandarin hand and body bomb while record this episode and it smelled so delicious that it was distracting. It's a really rich balm. My family uses it on our hands, bodies, and lips. It's from skin essence organics and works great even on dry, chapped areas or sensitive skin. A question that came in from one of our listeners asked if I have any natural health recommendations to help relieve the restlessness and nervousness they feel because of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). I first want to say that without knowing health history and background, I can't recommend any "prescriptions" based on just this question and I encourage anyone feeling this way to work with your regular healthcare provider or reach out to us at [email protected]. In the meantime, I suggest looking into 'clear day' from St. Francis Herb Farm. It uses a combination of herbs to help calm your body but it isn't a sedative. Regular listeners know that I always share with you the things I incorporate into my routines to make the really boring things less tedious. Today I'm drinking water, but I've added some powdered vitamin C and a scoop of grass-fed collagen peptides from Garden of Life. You can also put this into your smoothies, shakes, coffee, or whatever you like. You can even add it to your baking! One scoop is a really simple way to get me 20 grams of collagen.

  • Your Mood and Your Menstrual Cycle

If you are menstruating, you will go through four phases in each cycle. Each phase is marked by hormonal fluctuations and other changes in your body, which means we can predict a bit about what will be happening with your mood in each phase. This is part of why tracking your cycle can be really useful- if you can predict your mood then you can schedule work, social events, workouts, and other parts of your life around the energy you expect to have in each phase.

I go through each cycle phase and connect what's happening in your body to how that might make you feel.

If you have a question, send it on over to [email protected]!

Here are the main topics of this simplicity bite:

    • When you are on your actual period, you have decreased energy and may need more rest and self reflection.
    • In the follicular phase, you have increased energy and cognition. This may mean you feel more social and adventurous.
    • The luteal phase is marked by a mood shift from social and active to reserved and mellow. After this shift, you may be able to direct your energy to finishing projects, cleaning things up, and purging.
    • You will notice increased cravings and mood swings right before your period.
    • Make sure you support your body during all phases to keep yourself mentally and physically healthy.
    • Use your diet to help take care of your body and work with your moods through each phase

Hoping this episode supports you on the path of knowing, accepting, and loving who you truly are. Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do!

  • Taking Charge of Your Relationship With Your Money with Paula Willimek

I really feel like my husband and I have become financial ninjas in the last 5 - 7 years. My finances now bring me joy instead of stress. I've really flipped my story throughout my financial journey. That's why I wanted to have this conversation- I want all of you to get rid of the stress and shame that so many people feel when it comes to their finances.

So I invited Paula Willimek to join me for this episode. She is an incredible woman on a mission to help other women change their energy, their story, and their relationship with money. Paula takes a holistic approach to financial management, which includes managing your mental relationship with money.

This is definitely only the start of many episodes about our money and our relationships with it. I want us all to get to a point where we manage our finances to give ourselves the power to meet our goals.

Here are the main topics of my amazing conversation with Paula:

    • Paula felt her work at a big financial corporation was disconnected from what her clients needed
    • It's much easier to just keep doing what you're familiar with when it comes to finances
    • There's a lot of shame and guilt tied into whether you understand how to manage finances, which means that people often don't ask for help
    • Not feeling confident about managing finances causes stress for lots of people, and that stress spills over into other aspects of their lives
    • What we learned from our families and friends about finances often doesn't work for us
    • Women are now bringing in more money than they used to- earning sometimes isn't the problem, it's knowing what to do with those earnings that's stressful
    • Who to trust is also a big question: a financial advisor at your bank may try to sell you into programs that benefit the bank
    • Paula's program starts by asking people about their money story, which means who taught them and what they learned growing up
    • The next step in Paula's program is to examine what's happening to you financially now, especially what patterns there are in your financial situation
    • Then Paula guides program participants to create an action plan just for them, including how to snap themselves out of mental downward spirals
    • It's important to work mental health practices into your financial routines, like having a regular gratitude practice
    • Financial planning and recommendations must be personalized
    • Paula recommends starting with making sure you have some cash
    • Then if you have debt, look into aggressively paying that off, which can have a psychologically positive snowball effect
    • Next, consider working on a "power fund"- enough to cover several months of expenses so that you have more control over your life
    • Tracking every expense is hard work but very eye-opening
    • "Budgeting" is such a loaded, triggering word- do the things that make you happy, but know what those things cost
    • Don't wait for retirement or financial planning until it's a necessity- plan for success early
    • Some government financial assistance plans exist, but finding them and navigating them is difficult
    • The future of retirement income is uncertain- you cannot automatically depend on pensions for retirement anymore
    • Consider how your financial timeline affects your credit- wait to pay off credit cards until you've been billed, so you get that history of regularly paying off your debt

I ease my time working on my finances by working some me-time into my financial routine:

    • I do a face mask. I put a little peer cleanser on from Skin Essence, then follow up with an oil serum. Just be careful you don't forget it's there! Half the time I forget because it's so comfortable, then remember when I go to sip on my smoothie. Save 15% off of your order at skinessence.ca when you use the code JENNPIKE15.
    • I make something delicious. I'm really into apple turmeric mulled cider lately. It's a Garden of Life recipe that you can find right here. Bonus: this smoothie helps with mobility and general pain, like joint pain or soreness after a workout.
    • I make up something delicious. I also recently made up my own smoothie recipe using Sunwarrior's clean greens and protein along with some frozen pineapple and cauliflower- don't knock it until you try it! It's really satiating for me and keeps my body steady when I'm taxing my body, whether it's physically with a workout or mentally and emotionally with my finances. Save 10% off of your order at sunwarrior.com if you're a US resident when you use the code simplicity (all lower case).
    • I come to the work well-rested. If on Thursday night I'm not feeling really rested and calm, I'll use some Valericalm calm from Saint Francis Herb Farm to help me rest. It's a combination of herbs and botanicals that doesn't knock you out, it soothers your mind and body. I wake up on Friday feeling non-anxious and non-groggy, which is really essential for me to work with my finances. Save 15% off your order at stfrancisherbfarm.com when you use the code JENNPIKE15.

  • Why We Test DUTCH During Luteal Phase

The DUTCH that we're interested in is the Dried Urinary Test for Comprehensive Hormones. This test is administered during the luteal phase of your menstrual cycle. That's the second half of your cycle after ovulation and right before your period.

A menstrual cycle has four phases and during each phase, distinct things are happening with the body, including hormonal fluctuations. Testing at the peak of the luteal phase gives a better snapshot of what your hormone levels truly are. DUTCH is useful because results help us understand what's going on in your body, which means we can make a plan to reduce undesirable symptoms associated with your menstrual cycle.

If you have a question, send it on over to [email protected]!

Here are the main topics of this amazing conversation:

    • From Instagram DMs: why is DUTCH administered during the luteal phase?
    • A detailed overview of a menstrual cycle
    • Reminders that menstrual cycles are wildly variable
    • DUTCH tests not just for the hormones that you produce and have, but how you metabolize them
    • DUTCH methodology
    • The luteal phase gives a better snapshot of your hormone levels
    • DUTCH helps us understand what's happening in your body, which can help us reduce undesirable symptoms
    • What to do if you're not sure when you're in the luteal phase
    • Stress management is critical
    • Tips for stress management

  • Achieving Empowerment by Unsubscribing From Diet Culture with Stephanie Dodier

I had so many "aha" moments during this conversation. You could say that Stephanie Dodier helps women break away from diet culture. But that doesn't do her work justice. She promotes counterculture principles that permanently change how women relate to their bodies, including how to de-link self-love from body love and how to disrupt harmful generational knowledge transfer. She is empowering women to change the world from the inside out.

Stephanie is a Clinical Nutritionist who created the Going Beyond the Food Method, a cornerstone of her Conquer and Thrive program. She uses her own experience with food and her body to sustain her investment in sharing how she approaches personal health.

Here are the main topics of this amazing conversation:

    • Introducing Stephanie Dodier and how she inspires
    • What "being healthy" has come to mean
    • 14:00 Why Stephanie cares so much about the culture associated with being healthy

    • Women who ask for help with weight gain are ostracized by society because they don't fit the typical need profile
    • About diet culture and societally imposed body ideals for women
    • There is diversity in women's body size going back millennia- as far as we can trace back
    • How and why the medical industry participates in diet culture
    • Self-love versus body neutrality
    • The effect of living in a patriarchal society on "programming" girls' relationships with their body
    • Generational norms contribute to the persistence of diet culture
    • Jenn's early experiences with diet culture
    • How to begin pushing back against diet culture
    • 43:00 intuition
    • 43:20 how to deal with sabotage- how to re-think sabotage
    • Redefining health to be more than just a physical body

I ended this episode thinking about my daughter, so I want to share with you some products that I think will help us reinforce our beliefs with our actions and teach our daughters to take care of themselves outside of the diet culture we discuss in this episode. I've tried these as a mom- I hope they work for you!

    • We love smoothies because they're quick and easy. I started adding in Sunwarrior's Beauty Greens Collagen Booster in pina colada flavor. She likes that it tastes healthy, I like that it's got probiotics and is plant-based with greens in it.
    • I am encouraging my daughter to think about her skin as a whole. Skin Essence is Canadian-founded, organic, non-GMO, not animal-tested- this company is one that we love and have around the house, which is why my daughter's been giving them a try (and my husband and son too!). You can even talk to the company to get advice on which products may be right to try first.
    • I've mentioned before a plant-based iron organic herb tonic that my daughter has been using. It's been helping her feel a lot better, especially around her periods- it's common for young girls first getting their period to be anemic. Garden of Life's mykind Organics liquid iron supplement is junk-free and helps her body uptake and absorb iron. This could help you moms too! And the flavor is fantastic- her favorite is cranberry lime.
    • Another thing that I want to help my daughter with is reducing the problems that can be associated with having her period. Really Neutral Tonics from Saint Francis Herb Farm can help. I most love their menstrual tonic and PMS support, which you don't have to use together.

I hope some of these tips can help all your mamas out there, and if you don't have a daughter, then I hope some of these tips and tricks can help you.

  • TSH Is Not A Thyroid Hormone

In this episode of The Simplicity "Bite" Sessions, I am talking all about TSH, which is not a Thyroid Hormone. TSH is often used to test the condition of the Thyroid if you are exhibiting Thyroid issues; however, TSH does NOT give the full picture. Testing for TSH can give you an idea as to whether your Thyroid is under or over-producing hormones. Unfortunately, screening for TSH is problematic because by the time changes in the amount of hormone that is produced could indicate that the problem is well underway. I recommend a series of tests that will provide a more holistic approach to detecting issues with your Thyroid including TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, TPO (Thyroid peroxidase), and TGAB (Anti-Thyroid Globulin).

Here are the topics you are about to listen to in today's "bite" session:

    • We need to do better for women who are having signs and symptoms of thyroid issues and being tested incorrectly
    • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
    • TSH tests are not a full thyroid workup
    • Not a reliable screening
    • The screening is an outdated approach
    • Functional practitioners and allopathic practitioners agree that it is not a full thyroid screening
    • TSH is produced in the pituitary gland in the brain
    • TSH's job is to stimulate the Thyroid to produce its hormones (T4 and T3)
    • TSH is used for screening for Thyroid disease under the assumption based on how well you Thyroid is producing hormones
    • Screening for TSH is problematic because by the time changes in the amount of hormone that is produced it could mean that there is something already going on
    • Ranges of TSH can vary; however a number lower than 1 is concerning and will require more questions.
    • Testing needs to be more holistic
    • Here is a list of tests that you should be requesting:
      • TSH - it's part of the entire system and can provide information in conjunction with the rest of the list.
      • Free T4
      • Free T3 - T4 and T3 need one another so it's important to test both.
      • Reverse T3
      • TPO - Thyroid peroxidase
      • TGAB - Anti Thyroid Globulin

Hoping that this mini-episode helps you better understand your symptoms, how and when they are showing up in your body, mood, and emotions. Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do!

Here goes one of our listener's questions (someone else's question might be also your own, you are not alone!):

"I am suffering from congested skin, there are bumps and I am breaking out. I also have adrenal fatigue...I am exhausted, I have digestive issues, lots of gas and bloating, as well as constipation. I am a hot mess! I know it is a lot to ask, but do you have any recommendations?"

To answer this question, first I am going to recommend you to move your body with a moderate intensity of exercise. Secondly, your digestion needs to be assessed, you need to identify which foods are creating the gas and bloating in order to avoid them, if most of the foods are creating these unpleasant consequences, I suggest you have some Canadian Digestive Bitters from Saint Francis Herb Farm or digestive enzymes, especially if your gall bladder was removed.

Thirdly, you want to look at your minerals and support your liver, Liver Hepato DR is a tonic and a tincture that I use in my practice and it is not only a great support for your liver but also helps to detoxify, assists the process of elimination and it is very anti-inflammatory. I would also suggest you start dry brushing for lymphatic stimulation and to get to know more about your skin type, you can reach out to Skin Essence Organics and have a Skin Care Quiz, that will help you determine what type of products you need for your skin particularly. You can even chat with them if you have any further questions.

  • Your Thoughts Create Your Physiologic Reality with Victoria Albina

Today, I am excited to share a great talk I had with Victoria Albina during which we discussed very common themes in women's lives. From what it's like being "the good girl", "the fixer" and taking on other people's burdens and emotions. We talk about how to get ourselves out of these patterns while also becoming more observant rather than reactive.

Victoria Albina is a Certified Life Coach and Breathwork Meditation Guide with a passion for helping women realize that they are their own best healers, so they can break free from codependency, perfectionism, and people-pleasing and reclaim their joy.

She is a UCSF-trained Family Nurse Practitioner, has a Masters degree in Public Health from Boston University School of Public Health, and a BA in Latin American Studies from Oberlin College. Victoria has been working in health & wellness for over 20 years and lives on occupied Lenape territory in New York's Hudson Valley.

Here are the main topics of this amazing conversation:

    • Victoria talks about her own healing journey.
    • Victoria shares how she leads her practice.
    • Expectations, obligations, and conceptualization of self can become patterns that deregultate the nervous system.
    • The state of your nervous systems dictates the story that you feed into your body.
    • What is the polyvagal system?
    • How do you begin the work after you raise your awareness?
    • Acceptance can be really challenging.
    • Working on your balance.
    • How we use distractions to get away from certain feelings.
    • The role of dopamine in your body.
    • Choose your actions intentionally.
    • Learn to separate the circumstances of life and our thoughts.
    • Victoria gives advice to those women who are ready to make the mindset shift but struggle with the consequences that this might bring to their relationships.
    • Trust yourself to love yourself.
    • Victoria shares her favorite tool against personal criticism.

Hoping this episode supports you on the path of knowing, accepting, and loving who you truly are. Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do!

I wanted to share one of our listener's question:

"I am struggling with dry skin! Drinking water and eating healthy fats is not helping… What can I do?"

    • My first tip is for you to start adding collagen into your water or smoothies to become more hydrated and improve the quality of your skin from an internal perspective. I love Beauty Greens Collagen from SUNWARRIOR, these are collagen building peptides, which means that they are helping your body to produce collagen at a cellular level.

When buying at SUNWARRIOR use the code simplicity2020 and save 10% off your purchase.

    • Are you properly exfoliating your skin? Do you know your skin type? I love exfoliants that have a powder base, those only require you to add a little water and then massage them into your skin. One of the reasons for dry skin could be lack of drainage and lymphatic support. The exfoliant that I use is called Facial In A Jarfrom Skin Essence Organics, I leave it on as a mask and it leaves my skin soft and beautiful. It is a perfect routine to end your day, I highly recommend it.
